Maybe this will start a new 1,000,000 mebee it will fizzle. Pull up your big boy pants and dig deep. Sophomoric, or better yet less, wit and memories welcome. Bring it all azzhats. Herfing

The year was 1987, Debbie Gibson "Only In My Dreams", Tiffany "I Think We're Alone Now", and George Harrison "Got My Mind Set On You" were all at the top of the charts. What were you doing then, and what was the best (or only) cigar you had smoked by then?

If you're too young, google the year and the songs and what do they bring to mind that you were doing, and the best cigar you had smoked?

That's the stuff, keep 'em coming.
If the year runs out, post a new year. Lots of BOTL/SOTL on here, lots of years. Keep it going!

3 yr old son... that's a great age, but the year and the kid are all the good ones.
I had only had grocery store cigars at this point, Dutch Masters at best. It took until '95 in the BOOM to start branching out. Escudo Cubano was one of the best cigars I had smoked at that point. Had some Nat Sherman's and some Hoyo's and Partagas on a camping trip in NY paired with some good single malts and Grand Marnier that started opening my eyes.

Was in 6th grade I believe. Girls were finalizing their transition from cooties ridden to cute. Kicked azz at tetherball. Just couldn't get into this Beastie Boys thing that was making the rounds. No cigars, nor beer, nor Panama anything. Drugs were bad, mmmkay?

Working the door at a biker bar two nights a week...Running with as many Wimmins as I could...Working my butt off at the day job to pay off the house...

Catching as many Dead shows in the NorthEast as I could get away for...

Only cigar I smoked then was Macanudo Caviar...Think they were $80/50 back then, and they were made in Jamaica...

IMNSHO they now are a pale shade of what they were then...

The year my daughter was born, Gas was 90 cents a gallon, Def Leppard and big hair bands was the thing, Mary Jane was cheap, drag racing was a blast and even better if you took dead man's lane. Women was easy and had long hair for the most part. Winter was Winter and Summer was Summer.

1987? I was happily crapping my pants and probably just learning how to get up and down the stairs without falling.

1987........the 80s......along with the 70s, what I like to consider “ my previous adult life”.....pre wife and kids.
Hmmm.........87.......had a 25ish count desktop that usually held 5-10 mid range Fuentes or Punch, that were bought from a shpo, with green foam thingy for humidification.
(Not sure if I started doing mail order yet with tom suqs.)
Working at a Silicon Valley think tank, living in Santa Cruz, surfing all the time, drinking good scotch, even smoke an occasional Balkan Sobranie cig, (they were good!)
Drove a 67 Baracuda coupe, and had a 71 VW Westphalia poptop camper van for surf trips.
Met my wife in 1985, in the ocean at a favorite surf spot.........she was 16..... just a kid. By the time she was 18 (1987) she was showing too much interest in me, but I was having none of it, I was friggin 31! She was persistant.
When she turned 21, (1990) I finally caved in, and took her on a date, and that marked the end of my “previous adult” life.
Now, 29 years later, we’re in the great pacific north west, watching our grand daughter play.............and I’m smoking better cigars...

1987 ? Hmmmmmmm . . . . let's see.
I was 34 years old, working the graveyard shift in the lab, taking care of my 2 year old daughter during the day while my wife worked. Mostly listened to the "Blues", as opposed to the music of the day.
I was driving my favorite car, a blue 1969 Camaro convertible 350/4spd with classic Cragar S/S mag wheels.
Randall Cunningham was the QB for the Eagles.
The starting DL (Gang Green) consisted of . . . Reggie White, Jerome Brown, Clyde Simmons, and Mike Pitts.
Buddy Ryan was the Head Coach, and my wife and I were in year two of our twenty year "season ticket" run.

I hadn't discovered the wonders cigars yet. That came years later.

I was in the police academy in 1987, from Feb to Nov...working fulltime as the Chief of College Safety/Security at Long Beach City College...had 5 yr old son and 2 yr old daughter, so there wasn't much time for anything else...prolly averaged 5 hours sleep per night that year...

the Theme from Top Gun and a song from that movie, Take my Breath Away, were the anthems for that academy class...

took the course to lead the department by example...wanted to professionalize it and convert it into a certified CA law enforcement agency, requiring incumbent officers to attend a police academy on district time/expense if they wanted to certify and qualify as peace officers...but I attended on my own time and paid all the expenses...

only tried one cigar by then, not sure if it was a White Owl or King Edward or Dutch Masters...when I was about 12 years old...

1987...

Still working at Sony Hawaii as a sales rep with the unofficial title as Audio Specialist. I supposedly got a small bump in pay for it. Wife was already pregnant with our 2nd child (...we opted not to know the sex of the baby...) and we were waiting to move into our new house later that year.

Son was born in May, we moved into the new house in October. I also went back to playing competitive tennis that summer. It was a pretty busy year.

At work, amongst my many responsibilities, I was in charge of buying CDs to play in our home stereos, Discman, and CD boomboxes. Also made demo cassette tapes for all of the tape equipped players. I made a LOT of tapes. So, although not a fan of the pop music of the time, hadda have them available so that potential buyers could bop along to the popular songs.

Kinda like KOTC, once that 2nd child and mortgage came into play, had to leave behind the life as the wilder, less responsible guy. At this point in time, hadn’t yet discovered cigars, that wouldn’t really come till the 21st century!

Nov 2018 is all about Thanksgiving weekend. Ponder the first few weeks about how much I don't want to do the road trip this year.

Travel to Ohio to catch up with my side of the family. Internalize all the tension that is the uneasy armistice between my wife and sister.

Swear I'm not doing a dam thing on Black Friday no matter what my wife says. Go Black Friday shopping.

As small revenge, side trip to every B&M I can find within reasonable reach of our course between hotel and whatever Godforsaken mall she's chosen. She's a chitty navigator. There are many stops.

Celebrate my birthday with the fam. Argue I should be able to smoke since it's my party. I don't smoke

Travel home on Sun and rage at the heavens for daring to allow another Xmas to have creeped up on me so closely

- My first son was born

- My company was three years old and I bought a 386 PC with graphics card and math co-processor. Also got a top of the line monitor, an 18" digitizer board and a full scale 30x40 pen plotter.
Whole package cost me $10,000. Had to take out a loan. Phone line needed for modem but no internet. You had to call someone and say you are sending them a file so they can switch the phone
line to the modem. And sometimes it worked! Since then we have been vastly more productive and making less money doing it!

- probably listening to John Cougar Mellencamp and lots of different radio stations that don't exist anymore.

- thought I was a beer aficionado drinking Becks and Heineken until I went out to Lake Tahoe and discovered Sierra Nevada

- had the standard issue mustache, no one had beards except university professors and homeless people.

- drove a Bronco II

- fixing up old house that I still live in

- wore ties at work!

- Wife and I always went snow skiing once a year

- picked up a used 16' Chapparal with a Yamaha 90HP

- Newhart, Cheers and L.A. Law on TV

- I am sure I had a few cigars - I only remember Fuente (curly head?) I think they were 99 cents

- don't remember a thing about politics.

Things were good. We thought we were living in truly modern times!

Fuqin modems man!
I DO NOT miss those things at all.
Back in the day I used to have to send large files from Santa Cruz to Boston via modem........friggin headache.....but back then....wow!!, amazing tech, even when it disconnected and I had to start over again.
I too spent shocking amounts of money on 80s Apple Macs and Sony monitors.
But they did pay for themselves quite frankly, and then some...

Nov 2018

came back from a two week visit at our timeshare on da Big Island...

went with my son to Las Vegas for the Cigar Fest at the MGM...kinda pricey...some hot models, including Cigar Vixen Delicia, who was so down to earth during our brief chat, that I forgot how gorgeous she is... longest line was for Rocky Patel, but because Z said he was a jerk, I didn't bother to shake his hand...but Bradley of Alec Bradley was pretty cool and much younger than I imagined ...he's the son of Alec...spending the week-end in Vegas with my son was worth the price of the ticket...MiCallef Herencia was the best cigar handed out...glad my diabetes kept me from sampling all the free bourbons and scotch and tequila...after 3 1/2 hours, it was a too smokey in the cavernous conference room to stay...

Thanksgiving Dinner, had 20 people here...roasted a 24 lb turkey, made a stuffing casserole and mashed potatoes, son and daughter and SIL's mother chipped in with other dishes...

Had to do some serious talking to my Dad about breaking away from the traditional turkey roasting, finally got a "whatever, do what you want" so I ran with it.
Spatchcocked a store brand turkey that's been absolute crap the past two years. Salt, herb rub, 24 hrs in the fridge. Cooked in 90 min, turned out amazing readily measurable by the extreme lack of leftover turkey.

Kept up on my decision that while I'm still buying I'm smoking my old chit first. I used to (ahem, still) have a sizeable stock. I turned to my Viaje 2014 Collaborations (yeah, I'm hoe).
Farkas and Fernandez did a good run with these, the cello even after just four short years had captured a ton of oils from the wrapper and stained the cello a deep tan. Good smokes, my Dad, my Daughter, life was good. Simple stuff and the ones you love.
Taste and smell are the strongest links to memories. I think that's where cigars come in. That's where famous cigar smokers have lived very long lives. Remember, appreciate, and live.
The flavors, the wonderful aromas. They all bring back links to people and places. A great shared conversion over a cigar, a raging heated difference of onions but in the end were all still friends.
People with wide networks of associations and friendships, even if it's talking to people you see everyday in your walk of life live long happy lives.
Light that next cigar, sit back, contemplate, and keep it coming my great B/SOTL.

Nov. 2018

In the process of wrapping up a 21 year career in the reprographics industry. I had announced my intent to retire back in June and work no later than the end of the year. My "replacement" started on the Nov. 5. I wasn't tasked to take him under my wing and train him so spent time letting customers know of my plans. Unfortunately caught a bad cold that kept me out of the office for a few days so that kinda threw off my timing.

Spent time going through the piles of paper on my desk and ended up throwing away a bunch of stuff. Already had the files on the network so the hard copy was redundant. Also took home boxes of accumulated "stuff" that I figured was destined for the trash but wanted to look through them anyway. Over 98.2% of it did, indeed, go into the dumpster.

Started a countdown of remaining days left and would jokingly tell the other employees of how many more days I had left in the office. I thought it was hilarious, them, not so much.

Thanksgiving was a scramble as my wife's niece's family was mostly sick and they normally hosted T-day dinner. Early Thursday it was decided to hold the dinner elsewhere. At one point our house was gonna be the alternate site but my wife said no, we were already hosting Christmas so told her sister that she should do it. My wife won! Good for her!!

The reminder of the month kinda flew by as I tried to see as many of my old customers as possible. The new guy struggled to learn the services and technologies of our company and I'm sure at some point my boss had "Hirer's Remorse". But f'k him, iffin' he had treated me better, I probably would still be working. Hah!

Edit: Dunno if this was the "best" cigar I smoked that month but tried another Regius Seleccion Orchant 2014 Robusto for the first time in a couple of years and it was w-a-y better than what I remembered.

Zody,

This thread has absolutely nothing to do with cigars. It's a thread about old stories/memories with a title that was ripped off of the "What'cha Smokin Azzhats" thread. This thread belongs in "general discussion". I tried to subtly tell you that in post #12. You are either too dense to understand that, or you dont give a fu*k.

I have nothing else to say on the matter, but I would guess that you will continue to get posts with a "wrong forum" theme. A lot of people on this forum aren't as sophisticated as Whistlebritches, so prepare in advance for people to tell you what they really think.

Take care.

Year 2 of life in Corporate America...again.

Our old locally-owned company, The Blue Print Company (...founded in 1914...), had been sold in July 2008. Allan, the former owner, stayed for one year then “retired.” We were on our 2nd Mainland-sent Director of Sales and Operations but he was a lot more stable (i.e., mature) than the first guy who lasted all of 6 months.

We moved from the old location, had been there for 25+ years but parking really sucked. New shop, about 2 miles away, was smaller but more efficient. Parking was w-a-y better. Corporate rebranded ALL of the shops nationwide but because another entity had already registered the preferred name in Hawaii, we were known as “ARC - Pacific.”

More things became standardized, including the mandated use of a customer reporting management tool called “SalesForce.” Every rep was supposed to track all sales opportunities and activities. I started to spend more time typing into my computer than seeing customers. Hated it.

Organized a Las Vegas trip with a bunch of high school classmates, mainly because one of them had brain tumors and although successfully removed, in the back of our minds, we knew his time could be short. Unfortunately we were right, the tumors came back and he passed in early 2013. But, we had a great time on the trip and glad we did it.

Youngest child graduated from high school and he decided to attend UNLV, where our daughter was. Made for easy excuses to go to Vegas.

Still hadn’t gotten into premium cigars, that would come 3 years later.

Ran across this "old" thread. Man, how different is life today than it was 2+ years ago?

Enjoying the heck out of retired life. Busy with our granddaughters on average, 4 days a week. They come over in the morning, eat breakfast, brush their teeth and then we take them to their respective schools. We still dog sit our daughter's 9-year old Min Pin, Hunter. Like our grandchildren, we spoil him.

In the afternoon we pick up the oldest GD and watch her for a couple, three hours then either our daughter or SIL picks her up. I usually try to work in a nap in the afternoon.

Jeopardy has become almost must-watch TV. Matt Amodio, the current champ, has won over $1M so far. I don't know if he'll overcome Ken Jennings but fun to watch.

Looks like this one didn't take off, David. I blame that old fart whistlebitches for ruining it. In '87 I was smoking Topstone Bouquet.
