Wife poured me a blind tasting last night to help judge the quality of the latest Smooth Ambler Old Scout single barrel bourbons (distilled in Tenn presumably at Dickel instead of the previous stuff they sourced from MGP in good ole Indiana).

Smooth Ambler Old Scout Single Barrel 13 yr (TN) 110.4 pf
Belle Meade Single Barrel 12 yr (IN) 101.3 pf
Smooth Ambler Old Scout Single Barrel 10 yr (IN) 101.2 pf
Belle Meade Single Barrel 9 yr (IN) 104.4 pf

I guessed correct on the 2 old scouts but mixed up the two belle meades. I didn't quite rank them but the BM12 and OS10 were on top followed by the OS13 and the BM9.

The 13 seemed a bit too oaky. The 9 was very vegetal and floral. The others were just good all around bourbon notes. Hoping to revisit soon or maybe try again with some other MGP bourbons.

Overall, I'm not sure I'll chase the Tenn bourbons. I think this is the first one I've had that wasnt actually labeled Dickel. Barrell bourbon sources from the same stocks for 2x the price of this old scout though (allegedly). I've not tried a Barrell bourbon yet I dont think.

I found an old dusty bottle of weller 12 on the shelf of a small town store last week. Originally I was not a fan. Revisited it last night. It's ok

Don’t hear that very often on here. Was it at an old price?

It was the only one. They seemed glad to be rid of it. More room for black velvet or something. I think it was $38

You're welcome...…...the OF Rye now takes up shelf space where my beloved Sazerac used to.IMHO you'll not find a better rye out there at twice maybe even three times it's price.I gotta thank CSGAMECOCK for directing me towards it.

If ya needs help just let me know.I've been having to order mine, not a regular shelf item.....YET.Under $20 but I'm going to call another source and see if they can pick me up a case, with my military discount plus case discount I'm betting I can get this at $15-16 a bottle. If it comes in 1.75 ltr's I can get even a better deal.I buy all my OF Signature from them in 1.75's by the case at $35 and some change.Nobody else has even come close

The new king of whiskey is...

This past weekend, Henry McKenna Single Barrel won Best Whiskey at the San Francisco Spirits Competition. This is only the second time that a bourbon has won the top overall whiskey title. Now this doesn’t mean that every bottle of Henry McKenna you buy will taste like the bottle that won at the competition, because it’s a single barrel and none will taste exactly like it. However it does mean that in a competition typically dominated by scotch, japanese and rye whiskeys, the United States’ only national spirit reigns supreme….

Which release do you have? I bought the first one but wasn’t all that impressed. Heard the 2nd one was better but wasn’t willing to shell out another $150 to find out.
