Opps, I misread that. I thought Hank was saying his wife had studied "a broad" in Costa Rica. I was trying to figure out why his wife was studying a Costa Rica women with lose morals. My bad.

My fil used to smoke Garcia y Vega Gallantes. I was a cigarette chain smoker back then and if I remember right he was trying to get me to quit or slow down. Actually started buying them myself along with Antonio y Cleopatra Grenadiers.

This thread title reminds me of the cruel joke:
Guy asks his friend 'remember your first bj?
Friend says yes
Guy says 'how did you get the taste out of your mouth?'

Horrible joke....but funny.
I've used it.

My first hand made nice cigar was a Arturo Fuente Corona (don't know which one as it was a long time ago). A friend of mine gave it to me. Before then the only cigars I had smoked were the small Punch's in the tins while fishing, etc...

either Parodis or some long thin glass tubed cigars I think were called Dinos...smoked both off and on in high school.
Neighborhood Italian restaurant sold Dinos at the register.

In reality, it was a gas station White Owl when I was like 16. Yah. But it started me on down the holy path.

Anyone else?

White Owls are "cigars"??

Hmmm. My first cigar was a wood tip swisher sweet at 16.. if that can be called a cigar... my first real cigar was a Cuban H.upmann Coronas Major tubo, I bought while over in Canada when I turned 19... never went back to swishers! But took a break for a few years until grad school and was lucky enough to be invited to cigar & whiskey espn event. They were actually serving Cuban cigars. That night 20 yrs ago put me solidly back into the cigar world and I haven't looked back.

An AF 8-5-8. I had asked my Dad what he liked. So, I purchased one and gave it a shot (I was 26 at the time). I remember standing in my backyard it was freezing cold all alone. I got ZERO enjoyment out of the experiment. Needless to say, I didn’t smoke another one until I was deployed in Afghanistan. (Where I ended up smoking some nice Coobans). 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Tony, you probably already know this, but folks reading this thread may not, and it's interesting.

Some studies were done awhile back where they compared the cigar-smoking behavior of people with a history of cigarette smoking versus people with no cigarette experience whatsoever.

Both groups were given cigars and were told very specifically and clearly to NOT INHALE the smoke, to just puff it into their mouths and out again. All participants agreed to not inhale.

What they found was that the people with cigarette experience always inhaled the cigar smoke to some degree, even when consciously paying close attention and trying their hardest not to, and then subsequently swearing to the researchers that they had not inhaled.

This was true regardless of how little cigarette experience they had or how long ago it was.

The group with zero cigarette experience did not inhale, as instructed.

So, anybody reading this, if you've ever smoked cigarettes and now you're smoking cigars (or want to start), just be aware of this.

First cigar was a King James as a teen. After 20yrs of cigarettes, my first cigar that sent me down this path was a Montecristo in Jamaica. Don't know specifics, just that it was reported to be Cooban and was coronaish in size

To Puddin's point, I recall it took a force of will to not inhale. Now it appears I was unsuccessful. Need scientists and measuring devices

I had quit smoking a long time ago, switched to vaping, vaped for years, quit vaping and got into swedish snus, quit it all for about two months, and thought id have a cigar for the 2019 new year, a rocky patel decade with the camaroon wrapper. Boy did i buy that cigar for 17 dollars out of a liquor store humidor. Still learning and loving my new ("hobby") addiction.

RP Decade is one of my top 10 favorites. But I had to read over twice when you said you paid 17 dollars for it..

Something with a wood tip on it. I was 12 or 13. And I inhaled it.

King Edward, I was maybe 8-9 years old so, 40 years ago. My grandpa smoked them all day long. I remember helping him work on his porch, he put his cigar down to nail some boards, looked over at me and said "don't let that go out, little man, I don't want to have to relight it". I was sittin' on top of the world, puffing papa's cigar and getting away with it!... then my face turned green Sick

Many years and store boughts later a friend gave me a Gran Habano Vintage 2002. That was my first handrolled. At the time (about 5 years ago) it was the best cigar I ever had. My taste has changed drastically since, it's not a favorite but I still smoke one with him occasionally. Herfing

The first cigar my friends and I smoked were the ones Clint Eastwood smoked in The Good the Bad and the Ugly...we smoked Parodis, I'm not really sure what Clint smoked. Then I smoked Black and Milds every now and then for a long time.
For many years I smoked cigarettes, with the occasional mooched cigar thrown in, and I never got it, I thought they sucked...now I know why, I was getting the crap my buddies didn't want to smoke!
Then in 2016, a month or so before I joined here, I was out of work with a torn rotator cuff, I won a humidor full of cigars at a local estate auction. The cigars supposedly had 8 years of age on them, but who knows, and who really knows how they were cared for.
Anyway, one day, bored to death and sick of Andy Griffith re-runs, I decided to choose a cigar and take my book and a cup of coffee out to the deck, and see if this was a worthy purchase.
I had chosen an Oliva Serie G from the box, based solely on the fact that it was the shortest cigar in the box. If I didn't like it and tossed it I really wasn't out much.
Well, I cut it and lit it up with my Bic (um) bowl lighter. Anyway, it wasn't terrible, and after a few puffs, I took a sip of my coffee....it had gotten cold...if anything gets really cold in July/August. Well, that sip of coffee turned me into a cigar smoker. It was like magic, that plain old sip of the coffee I drank everyday(I make chitty coffee), tasted delicious! Like a QUALITY chocolate milk. I've been chasing that experience since then. I haven't found it again, YET, but I'm enjoying the hell out of the hunt. Herfing

I had a similar experience the first time I smoked an Ave Maria 6-7 years ago...jespear sent me one ...tasted some musk that reminded me of the scent of my first girlfriend...

and the first Camacho SLR perfecto I smoked, around the same time, had a strong flavor of wet leather, which reminded me of the smell of an old baseball glove I used when I was a kid...

have never re-captured those flavors...prolly hallucinating...acid flashbacks and such...

No one in my family smoked cigars. My Dad might have a Jewel wood tip once or twice doing yard work. There were some family members who smoked cigarettes. I might have had a couple long filler cigars before these one but I can’t remember. The first cigar I remember was given to be by a customer and it was a Blue band Opus X in the 2003.

I worked a locally owned Restaurant (Percy and Willies) which was one of the top restaurants in Florence, SC. The guy who owned the restaurant owned another restaurant (231) with was high-end dinning. They need some help for the Christmas time rush so I was asked to work both places. This was a great time and good money.

Back to the cigar. One night I had customer who was there for a dinner business meeting where they had a bottle of Opus One wine (pricey but awesome wine). After the meeting, we talked about different topics but cigars was the topic we focused on. He wanted to smoke a cigar and have a drink or two. I told him it would be fine but if it is ok to settle up because he was my last table. He said sure but why don’t you join me like a true cigar guy not wanting to smoke alone. I asked my manager if I could close out (aka cash out) the night and sit down for a smoke. The manager said yes, so I let the guy know I could. He told me to order him two Grand Marnier straight up and close him out. I cashed out and ran back into the Wine Room where he was sitting. He gave me a Grand Marnier and the Opus X with a blue band. He was telling how these were one of the top cigars and so on. I had no clue what I was smoking I was a young 21 older guy.

Many years (like 10 plus) later someone asked me about my first cigar and I told this story. Then it hits me I smoked an Opus X….. Like a true 21 older I didn’t know what I had until it was many years down the road.

Wow. 21? That is awesome. I didn’t have an opus until I was in my 30s.
