Too much time worrying about a song from 1930 rather than building an actual NHL team.

Taking down the Kate Smith statue? Really?

Buncha uptight puzzies.

Just because the Red Sox won a title after their limp-wristed re-naming of Yawkee Way doesn't mean the Flyers will find the pot of gold at the end of their pious rainbow.

As a Philly sports fan, I'm disgusted with them. Right now, I'm 5 minutes away from the stadiums, but in just over 2 weeks I'll be living 500 miles south. I'll continue to follow the Phillies and Eagles for the time being, but not too sure about the Flyers.

The Yankees stopped airing the Kate Smith version of God Bless America.

If one were to delve into the "reason" that the PC police are outraged, you'd learn that Smith recorded a song called "that's why darkies were born" or something like that.

The lyrics are undeniably racist.

But the other recording of this song from 90 years ago was performed by a black singer.

Is this 2019 America calling this the 1930 version of "it's OK for black people to use the N word"?

People have to get over themselves.

Some things in life are offensive.
Kate Smith singing God Bless America isn't one of those things.

Fact.

There tail goes again... trying to tell a business what to do.

Doesn't seem like anyone worried about it. They were provided information.... they made a decision on information.. they executed on that decision.

They chose to do this because they are a business and their goal is to have as many azzes in seats as possible. If there's one azz that won't go to a stadium because they don't like that the statue commemorates that woman, then it's in their best interest not to have the statue. It's the same reason there are a million little things businesses don't do that might offend your little daisy azz. This just happens to not be something that bothers you, so you're just SO AMAZED at how uptight people are.

This is the ultimate result of capitalism.

it appears even worse, according to Jeff Jacoby's opinion piece in today's Boston Globe.
Smith recorded "That's Why Darkies Were Born" and "Pickaninny Heaven", both with "cringe-inducing" lyrics by 21st century standards...BUT at least one of the songs, "Darkies was a "biting satire of white supremacist bigotry".

Oh, and that black singer was none other than Paul Robeson who recorded it in 1931. Anyone who has heard of Robeson already knows the song was not what we are hearing today.

In 1951, Smith invited Josephine Baker to appear on her TV show, the first time Baker had ever appeared on American TV. Baker is another whose familiar name should indicate how Smith was viewed by Black entertainment peers at the time as Baker was "controversial" and outspoken...unlikely to play nice with a bigot.

Since you do not live in the Philly area, you have no clue. Kate Smith is an intricale part of the Flyers. She was considered a good luck charm as the Flyers had an exceptional win percentage when her version of God Bless America was played before games. During important and playoff games, she would come to the stadium and sing live. After she passed, her daughter took over for her. The Flyers are going to lose way more seats over this PC bullcrap, then they could ever hope to gain from it. This was not done for the sake of capitalism. It was done to kowtol to the bullying, goose stepping leftist elites.

Technically, both are done for the sake of capitalism. A company doesn't back down just because a crowd is bullying them. A company only will "kowtow" to the bullying "goose stepping leftist elites" (funny you never use similar language when the right has corporate boycotts for stuff like holiday messages) if they think there will be revenue lost by not doing it. Companies are not egalitarian (and they should not be).

But... again... as I stated above, I didn't read anything about "bullying". Sounds like no one threatened to boycott, or protested... or anything. They just got the information, and decided that wasn't what they want.

I am not going to bother arguing whether it was a good or bad decision... because I honestly don't know. I don't have enough information about who she was... nor am I a minority, so I don't know what it would feel like (if it even registers) to have her statue there. The company made a decision. Whether they were "bullied" or not (I don't see any evidence they were), companies generally make these decisions based on the bottom line.

info emerged and without much critical investigation nor thought, corporate decisions were made.
those decisions were made by corporations for the reasons Victor states.

And those decisions would have been (arguably) admirable had they been based on facts.
But the facts make them look like panic decisions...unlike ending the hero worshipping of those who fought to keep a race enslaved.

You mean like "Dial one for Spanish,Dial 2 for English,...."
The USA is an English speaking country, and anytime I get English as a second choice, I hang up and if I can, I take my business elsewhere....some of these businesses don't seem to care if they wind up with any empty seat there...so much for the ultimate result of capitalism....Not talking

Or the amount of business they keep by making sure they can serve both english and spanish speaking customers is greater than the amount of business they lose from whiny people upset that a company wants to do business with people who are perhaps more comfortable speaking in spanish.

And incidentally you have likely never gotten "Dial one for Spanish,Dial 2 for English", as most large retailers default to english, with just a message saying something like "to speak in spanish, press ..." (in spanish of course). You just have to sit 2 seconds through that message and you're in. And you almost certainly (98.2%) never got a #2 selection for english. That's just something you want to believe occurs.

This land is your land, this land is my land
From the California to the New York island
From the Redwood Forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me
As I went walking that ribbon of highway
I saw above me that endless skyway
And saw below me that golden valley
This land was made for you and me
I roamed and rambled and I followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me , a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me
When the sun comes shining, then I was strolling
In the wheat fields waving and dust clouds rolling
The voice was chanting as the fog was lifting
This land was made for you and me
This land is your land and this land is my land
From the California to the New York island
From the Redwood Forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me
When the sun comes shining, then I was strolling
In wheat fields waving and dust clouds rolling
The voice come chanting as the fog was lifting

If frank arranges a beer summit I’m there.

As for the op I was outraged until the proximity rule kicked in.

I find the outrage to pc very similar to pc. Get a coat.

other than the knee jerk reaction by the Flyers and Yankees, I couldn't care less about Kate Smith.
I found it amusing when they put up a statue in the first place.
