Napping your honeys with plume

I have a small coolidor that fits 250-300 sticks. I have only napped or sat on some quality sticks that are hard to find or out of production. So with limited space I have added some newer smokes within a box of plummed sticks. My plummed sticks are naked and am resting some gems in the same box cello on. Pros or cons? What say the?

Are you sure it's plume? Every time I've seen posted photos of "plummed cigars" it has always been mold, instead. I have cigars that have been sitting for over 10 years, and non of them show any sign of plume.

Maybe you should post a photo in the photo section, and see what the brothers here have to say.

One of the best cigars I ever smoked was a 3-5 year aged and plumed El Rey. Funny thing was here were two of them aging from the same box and the other never plumed. I'll have to try to get it smoked this year. I had a Gurkha Legend that plumed and it wasn't good at all.

I am going to say this leads me to believe that mold is much more likely than plume here. Also, using the word sticks as in plural and its a common thing among your humidor is another sign it is mold. Plume is not common at all and I have never seen it on anything I have owned. It is not because of storage conditions or any other reason besides the fact that it is almost a mythical occurrence.

Mold isn’t always green, in fact, most of the time it looks like “ plume”...

Haters???? Dude, I was concerned about your cigars, especially since you are adding new ones into the storage. No hate here. I've seen dozens of photos posted by brothers who thought they had plume. Everyone of them was wrong. Mold on cigars is usually very fine, very white and looks a lot like plume.

Serious question. Does any of this "plume" appear in the foot of the cigar?

Right on I appreciate that. I posted the pic but its not showing. How long does it take? The foot has no plume, just some caps and sides. The sides have an even slight dusting...mold to me grows differently to me and is not crystaline to my knowledge.

Does it come off when you wipe the wrapper with your finger?

Sounds like it could be Plume.
Another easy test is to look at it with a magnifying glass.
And, check other cigars.....plume doesn't spread.....mold does.

Good question Shaun.

also, you're getting a 68 RH reading, but if not properly calibrated, you could be running well into the 70's RH...

hope you're right. I've seen just a few over the years, never close to 6 months though. A couple had a cheese kind of smell and tasted great.

No one is rooting against you. Hope you are correct.

Its only on my Darumas they have been in my coolerdor the longest everything else from last yr has been enjoyed. But i did wipe em down and zip lock them just in case.

Yes the plume came off on my finger with a swipe.

Yea but I know that they had some serious age on them when I bought them. I only have 7 left and I hope its not mold.

I am afraid it is mold then, I know that mold wipes off from personal experience (anyone who has ordered enough CC can probably attest to this). I have been told that plume does not wipe off of the wrapper from swiping with a finger.

I'm sad to say that it sounds like mold to me too, but let's wait and look at the pic. Pics have to be approved by Cbid staff. Yours probably won't show up till Monday or Tuesday.

I keep all my storage in the low 60s, and even with that, I had mold show up on some very old original release T-52s and Dirty Rats.

+1 on Shaun's......I'm thinking mold....sadly

Not from personal experience......never seen on any plume on the thousands and thousands of cigars I've owned, some with 13+ years on them.
But a very smaht botl I know said the same thing......plume is kind of a crystallization of the oils in the wrapper, and are actually still embedded in the wrapper, which is why in most cases they wont come off with a gentle finger swipe, while mold spores (look like trees from outer space under a good magnifying glass) will wipe up.

I might pull the trigger on a electric humidor. I live in the hot desert dry air no humidity.

I like the comment about plume being mystical. 2 in 12,000 is not a great percentage.

Not an expert but......

Plume can brush off and mold can persistently stick so I dont know about the brush off test.

Plume lightly covers whole cigar. Mold likes seams, labels, foot, one side vs other. both can be white but mold can also be green.

Magnifying glass and light will show sparkles vs weblike structure.

Seen plume once or twice. Had a shpo try to tell me mold was plume. Occured only on cigars on the top open box under a humidifier vent.

I have read that if the mold does not appear on the foot the cigar can still be smoked...but I have no personal experience.

It could be idk. I kept them in their original box at the bottom of a coolidor and first noticed some "plume" around the 6 month mark. Its month 8 now and I posted a pic of it. They smell fine, i wiped them down with a paper towel and zip loced them. I would assume if it was mold that they would have been all covered in it by now after the 2 month lapse in time. I am fairly new to the coolidor game as I have only had it for 5 yrs. I have had plume before on some sticks; again ones that I buy that are out of production or have some serious age on em. horse

I wiped them down and have them in a ziplock. So far so good. No plume or mold has resurfaced. I think it was plume. Funny how no one answered the original ?
