The new king of whiskey is...

This past weekend, Henry McKenna Single Barrel won Best Whiskey at the San Francisco Spirits Competition. This is only the second time that a bourbon has won the top overall whiskey title. Now this doesn’t mean that every bottle of Henry McKenna you buy will taste like the bottle that won at the competition, because it’s a single barrel and none will taste exactly like it. However it does mean that in a competition typically dominated by scotch, japanese and rye whiskeys, the United States’ only national spirit reigns supreme….

I have not. One of my cubs tried it this past year and stated it was a good pour for the money.

I keep a number on rotation, just like cigars.
Mostly bourbons, ranging from cheap to premium.
Cheap for mixers and shots. Premium over crushed ice or neat.

Ezra Brooks - fantastic inexpensive bourbon
Wild Turkey - love the unique flavor
Jim Beam - love the sour mash taste
Jack Daniels - love the classic oak/maple flavor
Bulleit - very bright/clean tasting
Knob Creek - full, yet refined
Buffalo Trace, Maker's Mark, ...

And whatever else looks interesting

And occasionally Asbach German brandy on crushed ice
or snifter for something completely unique and full bodied.

Love it!

Maker’s Mark Private Select Oak Stave - R. Field

BIL bought this a couple months ago and offered a taste to my wife and I tonight. I liked it and was mildly surprised that my wife liked it too...she’s not big on bourbon. I should see if they still have more.

Heaven Hill produces some quality stuff.
I'd be happy to knock back some Schnucks with ya

Hell, I'd knock back some Old Crow with ya too.
Just don't think I'd be happy about it.
That was some nasty ****.

Tasting notes? Impressions?
Love me some turkey. And Russel’s Reserve.

I’m sure it’s gotta be good

It's an uncut barrel proof(116.8 proof in the 2018 release) that IMHO is the standout of the Turkey family.Lots of vanilla and caramel up front and dark chocolate and spice on the back with a loooooooong finish.I'm a big fan of barrel proof bourbon and this one is in my top 3 for quality and #1 for value.I've seen it go over $50 but my local just went over $40 last year.My current bottle was $43 plus tax.

Hoping the 2019 release is as good or better if that's possible...…….regardless looking forward to it.

I really like Russell's reserve but I like bourbon's 100 proof or higher.Who knows...….maybe Rare Breed is nothing more than Russell's Reserve at barrel proof. There was only $4 difference between the two yesterday.....$39 and $43.
