How high is to high?

I have 3 boxes that I use as long term storage and I keep the humidity around 60, worried about mold If I want to bring them back to normal humidity how high would you go and for how long? Temp is steady at 68f Any advice?

I was thinking of wetboxing them at around 68 - 70. Think that's to much to soon?

For long term storage I’d shoot for 68 - 70. Any lower and the natural oils start dying out. Keep in mind that if you do raise the rh, keep a close eye for signs of mold. Btw, most storage areas at the sight of manufacturer go by the 70/70 rule for a reason.

For the container where you keep stuff you’ll smoke within say a month I’d keep that at whatever rh & temp you find most palatable.

Something else that should be considered is the source from which you buy your cigars. Buy as far up the distribution line as possible. Nothing worse that quality cigars stored under less than ideal conditions enroute from the manufacturer.

That’s one of the reasons that likes likes Fuente cigars. Many better sphos order directly from Fuente which means a much shorter stay in uncontrolled conditions.

Right now I'm trying to decipher the Cuban box codes. They really got tricky because people didn't want boxes from the outer provinces. Trying to figure out Partagas in particular. I've heard rumors of quality issues with boxes outside of Havana's factories. But I get your point about getting as close to the source as possible.

I've had hundreds of boxes (all Cuban) that I keep at ~60% & 60-65 F for close to a decade and they all aged gracefully. Never had any beetles or mold. Just make sure that if you get any boxes that are vacuum sealed that you unseal them after they arrived. Ready to smoke without any dry boxing, etc... I think the too much RH and temp and you're just asking for trouble. fog

I'd heed what Buckwheat advises. I've sampled some of his stock, and whatever he was doing worked wonderfully.

I to have been lucky enough to be on the end of a Buckwheat beating and if he said sacrifice a chicken at 12:37 on a Saturday I'd be eating chicken Saturday night;-)

I have cigars well over 10 years old that have never seen humidity above 65% ……..all have aged perfectly some with plume but never any mold.My target is 63%.I smoked a Tat Cojonu 2006 from a box dated Oct 2009 tonite…….simply fantastic.
