Trade war with Mexico?

So now our orange idiot has declared he will start implementing a 5% tariff on Mexican products beginning in June if they don't stop their illegal immigrants from coming across to the US.

So we'll be fighting a trade war on 2 fronts....

This is a vague demand... we can't say whether they've done a good job or not of controlling people leaving their country illegally (can you imagine what you would do if the US kept you from leaving the country because some other president said to?)

This is bizarre....

https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-us-canada-48477328/us-agents-catch-1000-migrants-crossing-texas-border

Believe this is authentic video from two days ago....incredible

"US border authorities in El Paso, Texas, have detained more than 1,000 undocumented migrants who crossed the border from Mexico - the largest single group agents had encountered.

The group, which included entire families and 63 unaccompanied minors, were from Guatemala, Honduras or El Salvador, agents said. They crossed the Rio Grande River from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, and broke through a fence into El Paso."

I’m on record saying ship illegals home. Strengthen the border in smart ways, which likely is not a wall but wtf look at it as part of an option. I want way more legal immigration and no tolerance for illegal. If we have the former it’s easier to accept the latter.

I do however think the issue is overstated and scapegoated. That’s why I would love it to get addressed. Remove it from the table to illustrate all the ills they are blamed for will still exist. The economy, healthcare services, welfare, crime, disease etc are all blamed on this issue and all WAY overstated. WAY.

It is quite possible, and I think probable that Trumps obsession with the issue is leading to a solution that costs way more than the problem. Spend a million to save a Dollah. But it is fresh meat for his sheep.

By the way it is also quite possible this increases illegal immigration.

And I’m pissed I didn’t move out of the market for awhile a little over a month ago. My gut told me too. Oh well maybe it will stabilize and the stable genius really is a solid long term thinker just not getting enough credit.

In fairness maybe he will be more successful dictating other countries actions.

this is the "and Mexico Will Pay for It" part of his plan...he's gonna figure that once we start charging the tariffs, Mexico will be paying us, and he'll claim that any work on the wall will be charged to that...

and none of his advisers dare to tell him the truth about tariffs...his supporters will be paying...

I hope that 5% hits produce... It's preposterous that Mexico ships produce to the United States and undersells American grown produce by paying their workers a wage we would never allow, fertilizing and fumigating with products we'd never allow, all under sanitary conditions we would never allow...

Should be 100% on produce.

In my opinion, you've got that backwards.

We must stop the illegal immigration first.
Only then can we realistically increase legal access.

And to the OP: Mexico has done virtually nothing to prevent this.
I'm not saying a trade war is good or bad. Just that it is very easy to see they're content to let these hoards pass through.
