Thanks Pudding Mittens, I appreciate it. That is actually the hygrometer I have. Good information all around.

I am sitting here in quiet contemplation of simply "WOW". I got two pm's today, both folks offering to hook me up with some cigars to broaden my horizons.

I have never seen that kind of generosity on any forum. I've been reading the n00b threads, and frankly I'm stunned. You folks are simply amazing.

I'm looking forward to getting to know you guys, and vice versa. "Smoke if you got em!"

Yep !
I learned that 15 years ago.

Wow, a great looking variety there! Thank you so much Stephen! Applause

I have to run in early today, so I'll scope them out when I get home.

Get a large (70-120 quart) transparent storage bin, either the airtight gasketed kind or the much more widely-available and cheaper ungasketed kind where the lid's latched on by two handles on either side... both work just great... and put inside it a quality digital hygrometer/thermometer combo (preferably calibrate it first), some pieces of Spanish cedar and cigars (both help greatly with humidity control and humidity swing buffering). The more full with cigars and Spanish cedar it is, the more stable the humidity will be. Also put in humidity control device(s) (see below).

Cost: $15 for the bin, $20 for the hygrometer (I recommend only the "Caliber IV" model which is highly accurate and can be calibrated manually), $FREE for the Spanish cedar pieces (usually you can ask a cigar guy or cigar shop nicely). For humidity control devices I use little Tupperware bowls full of super-absorbent polymer chunks/spheres that I occasionally recharge with 50/50 (50% distilled water, 50% propylene glycol) solution, plus some 69% Boveda packs (2-way automatic humidity control) for "trimming" and more accuracy. The 50/50 polymer jars recharge the Bovedas continuously so you usually never have to touch them, you just add more 50/50 to the jar(s) occasionally. Bovedas packs are like $3-4 each, the polymer jars are $10 at retail or you can buy the polymer in bulk and use your own plastic containers and save a lot of money.

Adding all that up, you can see how cheap it is. $15 + $20 + $FREE + ($3-10 or so x 2 or 3) + ($3-4 x 2 to 4) = as low as $45 to get a giant climate-controlled see-thru container (read the meter right through the walls without opening it!) that can store hundreds or thousands of cigars. Maintenance is almost zero.

Way, WAY better idea than expensive, tiny, leaky, high-maintenance traditional wood humidors.

SOURCE OF INFO: 21+ years of cigar collecting resulting in the need for many containers like this. Oh, get containers that are stackable (almost all are) where the bottom of them locks into the top of the next one. Trust me, you'll end up with more than one if you're serious... and more than a dozen if you're REALLY serious.

A cigar veteran told me this when I was first starting out. 10-20 times the storage capacity for a small fraction of the price and maintenance hassles. He was 100% right. So, I'm "paying it forward" and giving the info to a new newbie! Enjoy!

Woohoo, got this up and running and just added the cedar pieces to it. I put in 2 pieces 1/4x4x36 and it smells amazing in there.

I've got two 69% boveda packs in there right now, and one of the big ones on order. I'm probably going to order some heartfelt beads. Those get pretty good reviews.

Thanks for the help, greatly appreciated.

Me too. Tried 70 for a while but found I'd have burn issues unless dryboxed and I hate planning ahead

Down where you're at,
you just may need a dehumidifier to get it down to 65%...

Sweeeeeeeeeet.

Keep in mind the superabsorbent polymer gel beads I mentioned and the Heartfelt beads are two very different systems. But, both have lots of fans and great reviews. I only have experience with the polymer, but from all I've read, the Heartfelts should work too, provided they're the same RH percentage as the Bovedas (or within a point or so). Different percentages will make them "fight" with each other.

Actually I'm not sure if your Bovedas will auto-recharge though. Mine do, presumably because the polymer jars are a one-way system that emit water vapor until the environment reaches 70% RH, whereupon they stop emitting, and the Bovedas are two-way and 69%, so they slowly trim that 70 down to 69, which slowly recharges them continually. It seems as if that slow recharge rate is somehow about the same as their emit rate, averaged out, so they never get too big (full) or too dry (crispy). So, all I ever have to do is refill the jars with 50/50 solution (and quite rarely too), and the Bovedas take care of themselves. But if instead you're using Bovedas with the 69% Heartfelt beads, which are a very different and two-way system, you may not get this effect. You're going to have to keep an eye on it and see how it works. I'm guessing it'll still work well though. I've heard reports that it does. You may just have to recharge the Bovedas now and then (not a big deal, just soak 'em in distilled water for awhile).

If you think the smell is great now, add a lot more cigars and let some time pass. The cedar and all the aging cigars' scents will all "marry". You'll open the lid and stick your nose in there and take a deep, long sniff and think, "this is what Heaven must smell like when you die!"

That's the one nice thing about having 8 large and 4 small humidors.
The smell from each one is unique and enticing...

Love that smell!
