haven't weighed in on this thread yet.
down 10 since I retired mid February...248.5 this morning.

for me, it's more of a chemistry experiment than will power/portion control.
keeping a large amount of veggies in my diet seems to kick up my metabolism, and staying full seems to be a need for me.

next goal is 244, that's what I weighed at my daughter's wedding 9 years ago and never saw that number again.

ultimately, 194-200 is a good weight for me.

Try some celery Frank. That fills me up and keeps me from feeling hungry for a good while. BTW, I see what you did there. Wicked smaht.

about 15 years ago I did my own modified version of the South Beach Diet, lost 40 easily, was never hungry...will power will eventually lose out... what this diet did for me was remove the urges by helping me understand the glycemic index and therefore be able to avoid the sugar/starch cravings (satisfied by sweets/chips etc) which is quickly followed by a sugar crash, starting the whole eat-though-not-hungry nonsense of binging.

For example, I was then able to go to play cards and not eat any chips or m&m's and stuff simply because I did not want them, certainly not because I had the strength to say no. Had I wanted them, I could have eaten the entire package of each.

At that time, my father's health faltered for the last time and I went there every night after work and weekends for 6 months to have dinner and visit and help my mother deal with stuff while he was in a hospital bed in the living room...our Hospice agency was a major failure for us. Got way off my diet, plus the constant stress...I had no shot.

Fast forward six months and I had put on the lost 40 on my way to adding 65. So I lost about 10 a year and a half ago, and have started to return to that style of eating in the last couple of months, so overall down 20 from 2 years ago and looking to be diligent about it going forward.

As for celery, I once again prepare snacks to keep in the fridge, one on them is celery hearts with Laughing Cow light spreadable cheese. Lucky for me I love things that are good for this diet, which is really a chemistry experiment for my system to step up its calorie burning, increase my metabolism, and never feel hunger.

Hunger. Full. I have always been aware of feeling full, but it was never a deterrent to eating until all was gone if I liked it.
So this particular way of eating sort of does that for me.

edit: didn't gain 65 in six months, it was over several years but was constant

I didn't know the tripod was a beer belly.

I think my recent weight loss had something to do with getting a haircut.

With the move, running back and forth to Jersey, and trying to get settled in, we haven't been eating as clean as we should. Even had several high carb cheat meals during the trips. Up to 203 end of last week. We decided to get back into intermittent fasting 2 or 3 times a week. Sunday into Monday I did a 23 hour fast. I actually feel better, I think clearer, and have more energy while I'm fasting. Back down to 199 this morning.

192 - After a couple weeks on the road hitting up The South’s Greatest Hits...bbq...fried pies...fried chicken...fried potatoes...fried catfish...delta style hot tamales...hope I didn’t miss anything.

I’m gonna get serious with this thing and see if I can lose 20 pounds by 8/20.

Yeah, fell and fractured his skull on the sidewalk or steps if I remember right. But he was a good looking, lean corpse. I am also working out cardio daily, between 7 and 11 miles depending on how much time I have on a given day.

Surprised myself...188 lbs this morning after a week of eating well in Seattle and Portland...a 6 mile hike at Mt. St. Helens, an 8 mile walk to/ hike at Forest Park in Portland, a walking tour of the sprawling Nike Campus in Beaverton (sister's friend's daughter works for Nike) and a tour of the Japanese Gardens at Washington Park in Portland contributed to the calorie burns...

this is the lowest I've weighed in several years...

So here's what I'm doing.

Caution: On the one hand, it's pretty extreme. On
the other hand, it's no more rigorous than when you
have weight loss surgery.

I lost 35 lbs in 45 days. You decide if this is
right for you.

Here's my story:

Went to the doctor. She told me I was morbidly obese
according to BMI. I was pretty glib and told her that
nobody took BMI seriously since lean strong
professional athletes are always going to be obese on
that scale. She shot back "Are you a lean strong
professional athlete?" [We were bantering back and
forth, so no offense was taken].

Then she asked if had considered weight loss surgery.
I said that I had not and would not. She said I was
a good candidate. Kinda hurt my feelings.

I just couldn't justify the cost or risk. I figured
that I would just eat as if I'd had the surgery. So
I asked someone who recently had the surgery what he
was eating. He said, "Not a whole lot." I asked
what he did for nutrition. He said that he was
taking a men's multivitamin every day.

So I put together a plan that is very low in calories
and sodium. I also wanted to have something that I
didn't want to measure, refrigerate, or cook (I'm
lazy like that). Even the can is a pull tab.
Everything comes from WalMart.

Here it is:

Daily Food List (I'm including the UPC codes so
there's no confusion about exactly what I'm eating)

As much black coffee (no creeam, milk or sugar), water,
. and crystal light as I want
1 ea Bottle of water
2 ea Great Value No Sugar Added Orange cups
. UPC Code 0 78742 02723 4
1 pack of 4 Belvita Chocolate fiber wafers
. UPC Code 0 44000 03194 7
1 ea Starkist Tuna Creations Ranch
. UPC Code 0 80000 51420 2
1 ea Starkist Tuna Creations Bacon Ranch
. UPC Code 0 80000 51590 2
1 ea Can of Swanson chicken
. UPC Code 0 51000 02379 7
7ea Quaker lightly salted rice cakes
. UPC Code 0 30000 16901 8

Here's WHEN I eat. It's spaced every two hours so
my body won't think it's starving and shut down
my metabolism.

8am two of the four Belvita wafers
10am the other two Belvita wafers
Noon either packet of tuna and a rice cake
2pm one orange cup
4pm the other pack of tuna and a rice cake
6pm the can of chicken and a rice cake
8pm the remaining four rice cakes
10pm the remaining orange cup

Notes
Total calories: 805; Total sodium: 1350. Those
. numbers look pretty drastic because they are.
. The doctor didn't like the plan because I
. lost too much too fast. I reminded her that
. it's the same food plan I'd have if I had weight
. loss surgery. She conceded. She said that the
. caution is that it's not sustainable long-term
. and that yoyoing is worse. Noted. Time will tell.
Feel free to tinker. Most people could eat twice
. this much and still lose.
I take a multivitamin every day.
Wife says I no longer snore.
Doctor took me off the both blood pressure meds.
I'm never hungry.
I weigh daily. Once I stop losing at least a half
. pound a day for two days in a row, I eat a regular
. meal of whatever I want (pizza, icecream, comfort
. food). That effectively resets my leptin levels
. so that my body knows that it's okay to keep
. losing weight. Whenever I do that, two days later
. I'm down at least a full pound.
A week ago I had to do some traveling for work.
. Although the food is pretty low maintenance (no
. refrigeration or cooking), you can't do TSA with
. it and it's too inconvenient to go to a WalMart
. if there is one. So I just went off plan.
. Came back five pounds heavier. Went back on
. plan. Two days later those five pounds were back off.
. Doc wants me to add exercise. I just don't think
. about it. It's not a habit so it just doesn't
. happen. I'd like to add it. If I do I know my
. results will be greatly accelerated. In fact I
. may have to up the calories, but remain under the
. sodium threshold: 1500 for adults. That's a pretty
. tall order.
Rice cakes sound terribly boring but they're really
. like eating popcorn. I even "splurge" on the
. sodium and get lightly salted. They're really
. good IMHO.

Maybe this will help somebody. Let me know if you
. have any questions or if I left something out.
