we go all in helping to "free" some populations when the people don't rise up on their own to be rid of oppressive government. usually does not end well.

Here's a situation to support the people who are risking their lives. Not suggesting to send troops, but how about a few words (or tweets) of encouragement for the people who prefer freedom, especially after having tasted it?

I hope not.... but think there will be a Tiananmen Square moment in Hong Kong, where China will use it's military to gain control...

If even a single Chinese National were to elude that tyranny -
That would be one very slippery slope indeed

“Slope”
(Aus, UK, and U.S.) a person of Asian (in Australia, especially Vietnamese; in America, especially Chinese) descent.

Know your slurs dammit!
So frustrating...

(No offense intended. Deepest apologies to my Asian brothers and sisters, except for one Asian wannabe Latino)

If only we had needed Saddam or the Taliban....or Ho Chi Minh, even... for a trade deal...lot of blood and treasure could have been saved

Hong Kong is part of China -- forget what you ever heard about two-party system or any of that nonsense -- China now has plenty of financial centers and modern ports -- no reason to think they aren't going to make Hong Kong submit one way or another.

Encouraging words or tweets would have little chance of moving towards peaceful and successful... outcome; and could likely do the opposite. I love Hong Kong...one of my favorite cities...but seems to me that we would be smart to stay well clear for now. Hopefully, we've been well clear since before the Umbrella stuff.
