I love the sheer carnage in "The Blues Brothers" big chase, but for pure madness, it's hard to think of one that tops this. None of that The Bald and the Really Miffed Part 27 nonsense. The fact that McQueen does so much driving in this is insane enough. The technology of the time...look at the body roll in the turns. The hills of SF are borderline insane to drive even at legal speeds. This one still holds my attention for the entire scene.

Has a bit of a personal connection for me, too. 40 years ago, as I was nearing my 16th birthday, my mother traded in her black over maroon '69 Charger for a (Dear God, I wish I was making this up), brown Ford station wagon. With fake wood panels. Sure, you could get it over 100 (it had the 460), but the steering was so sloppy, and the aircraft carrier size made it lethal...you never could be sure where it was going.

I still haven't forgiven her, but I do have a Mustang ('07 GT, Vista Blue, less than 40K miles...Highland Green was not offered that year). I also don't have to double clutch, which is a plus. So the model years are close on one, way off on the other (although 05-09 is my second favorite iteration of the Mustang models), but it's the crazy chase scene that still gets me.

LOL. I still remember that one. Wife and I had arrived at the Peppermill in Reno, I turned on the TV, and...what the hell am I watching? However, any car chase you can time with a calendar should be DQ'd, IMHO.

Also, it took me three friggin' years of trying criminal cases (we're talking about 10-12 trials a year) before I could get through a single trial without someone mentioning that damned case. Even had one where we nearly got all the way through a slugfest of a murder trial (very skilled prosecutor, very few legal issues to slow us down, just 2 weeks of intense exam and cross-exam of witnesses), and an outstanding trial judge for whom I had a ton of respect finally mentioned it towards the end of the case. I just wanted to scream.

Love the Blues Brothers, but there was an even better one in Chicago...Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines on the train tracks.

I didn't think Bullit was even Mcqueen's best....prefer the motorcycle run in Great Escape

#5 "Running Scared" I love that movie, and that car chase IS fantastic. I can do the Billy Crystal call exactly...cracks up my buddy. I'm still partial to Bullit, however. Need to see GE again. Been so long I haven't seen that ride in eons.

#7 Yeah, that one is pretty good, too. Damn...someone has to have made a compilation...yup. I'm too toasted to go deep diving, so here is Watch Mojo, so there will be some odd choices and order, but also some cool trivia. This is what I got. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8O_orAIDrI

The fast and furious movies have a batch of great car chase/race scenes in them.

Duel. The whole movie was a car chase.

After that, Gone in 60 Seconds (1973 ?).

The Italian Job (1969), French Connection, Death Proof, T2.

If we are going to go unrealistic but entertaining: every Bond movie, Mad Max 2 Road Warrior and Mad Max Fury Road for absolute over the top entertaining ridiculousness.

As for Bullitt... the chase scene from Bullitt really deserves an award for editing. The guys in the cut room made it look seamless and the streets appear to be all connected. As for Steve McQueen's driving, he only did part of the scenes, the ones where you can see his face, all the others were stunt drivers. Which is just as well because McQueen plowed into a parked car trying to make one of the turns doing quite a bit of damage to that mustang, then lost control on another maneuver and took out a camera - narrowly missing the cameraman and the assistant. It still gets an honorable mention though.

And then there was this one...

Agreed. But I still can't help but notice them passing that green VW 4 times.

A lot of great chases mentioned here, but no love for the Bourne movies?

Baby Driver...the driving chaos while a variety of music plays in Baby Driver's ear buds is cinematic bliss...only negative is the exhaust notes from the cars being driven aren't good matches...

Some good ones here. I almost didn't watch Baby Driver...didn't really get it, but on about the third try, yeah. The engine sounds and video should get about every Foley Artist in Hollywood fired any more. I was watching some TV show the other night when a car pulling out of a gravel parking lot, slowly enough to not spin up any free rock, shifted gears four times and sounded like a V-8 from the 70's (the car in question was powered by a particularly feeble 4 banger). The car noise/visual matching is laughable any more. TV and movies.

As for editing Bullitt, sure, but some of the driving was still insane (and I'm probably being sentimental here). And yeah, the green bug. Four times. Still, those are two badass cars I love, and SF streets scare the dickens out of me (and that's saying something...some Seattle hills and roads are harrowing, too...and some mountain roads around here should post signs with the suicide hotline, as you've got to be a little bonkers to drive them).

I watched the first Fast & Furious. I'm sorry, but I cannot watch a movie with a plot that is shorter than the movie title.

60 Seconds...mixed feelings. Terrible movie, but some primo cars and some good chases. WTH is with Jolie's bleached dreads? I mean, that kills half the movie right there.

Still haven't gotten around to seeing Death Proof. I keep waiting to watch it with its companion movie, but I always have more pressing stuff going on. Sounds like I should move it up the queue.

To Live and Die in L.A. Damn, I'd forgotten that one. Outstanding, armrest-gripping chase.

T2...pretty much any scene with a motorcycle in it qualifies, IMO.

Fury Road was totally lost on me. Plot is barely there, maybe 20 minutes of dialogue the entire movie, and the whole thing seemed like a YUGE waste of film. I forced myself to watch it once, but I cannot even stand five minutes of it on another go-round. Second Mad Max movie had this batshiat 20 minute chase that the franchise will never top.

One of the Bourne movies was featured in the Watch Mojo clip. The vintage Mini was fun...they killed 5 of the 6 they had for the movie during filming.

Not that abomination of a steaming turd of a movie wrapped up in an abortion tortilla covered with diarrhea sauce and kidney stones. I was talking about the original.

Some great movies mentioned above...got me thinking of this one, and although no chase scene per se, brings back some memories about my (...very short...) car racing days - Two-Lane Blacktop

James Taylor, Dennis Wilson and Warren Oates co-star in the movie.

You had me worried. The movie is definitely something the Geneva Convention prohibits showing prisoners, but I hadn't heard of the 1974 film you cited. That is much better. At first I thought that was a Javelin, but I think that yellow car is a '71 Fastback Mustang. Kinda tough to tell with one eye. Gotta get a bigger monitor. Thanks for the tip, however. That is one badass car chase.
