We are planning a trip to the region for middle of Sept. Flying into Buffalo. Planning on about a week and will visit a few wineries and breweries as well as any other attractions.

Any places of interest or tips that you know about would be helpful. Thanks.

If you get as far as Cooperstown, in addition to the Baseball hall of Fame, check out Ommegang Brewery. Definitely worth a visit.

Been some time since I've done the falls but I prefer Canadian side. I like the Maid of the Mist and cave of the winds.

don't know what happened to him, but I think mirthandir (sp?) lives up there...maybe moonman (hope he's doing OK).

I went to school (briefly) in Seneca Falls, located on Lake Cayuga up the road from Ithaca...Ithaca was a cool town, but I was 18 and a little wild then (1971).

Seneca Falls was home to the Womens' Suffrage Movement but not that much to see about that...not far from Waterloo though, best know for the town where Frankie T got arrested, coming back from shenanigans at Hobart College.

Duff's Restaurant. It's a neighborhood joint with great wings and beef on weck. Beef on weck is a Buffalo must try. They have their own "Duffs" beer which isn't bad.

I like the original shop, but ymmv. ;)

I was disappointed by the finger lakes. It was false advertising.

I appreciate Fiddler’s response. Anybody else have anything (constructive) to add?

Buncha jackalopes.

I saw the OP as a request for jokes and harassment.
Didn’t think anyone went to the Niagara Falls/Finger Lakes area voluntarily.

Sorry

If you go to the finger lakes just remember apparently they don’t consider your thumbs to be fingers and they don’t appreciate over enthusiasm.

There are a number of wineries worth the visit Dr Frank Constantine, not sure if the spelling is correct. He was the pioneer of the region. Cave Spring, over the border in Canada, very good Riesling, cabernet Franc, and Pinot Noir. Also a Germanic name Wiener something, good dry Riesling, good sparkling wine. A few other names of good wineries, Ravines, Boundry waters, I'm sure I am missing some. Also about 40 minutes with of the finger lakes region is Watkins Glen, one of the most beautiful outdoor wonders I have ever seen. Given your love of the out doors you should not miss this. If I had never been there it would be on my bucket list. I have never been there but have been told by relatives who live there that the Robert H Tremen state park is equally magnificent. Also there are quite a few waterfalls in the area that are very beautiful. Finally the is the Watkins Glen race track, which is formula 1 in style. I think there are tours of the track, and you can drive the track for a price.

Did a quick look and the one I remembered was Merritt. Didn't see the other one listed, but it was something like Shlosh....- of course it was the last winery and very small and we were a bit schlossed by then but the Apple Crisp wine was heavenly. It was nearly 20 years ago. Sorry Frank.

Not much into sweet wines but do like a late harvest on occasion. Definetly like a good Johannesburg Riesling on the dry side. Thanks.

Lots of other good dry wines there Frank, you just have to know where to look. Though Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot tend to do poorly there. Tasted a suprising Riesling this week, from Michigan, Traverse City area. Bone dry, racey acidity, wonderful nectarine and white peach flavors, and an amazing nose. Michigan, go figure.

No, tasting at work is work, every Wednesday the distributors bring in 5 or 6 wines to taste so about 40 wines in total. Swirl, nose taste, pull air through wine, spit out wine, seek finish, rinse mouth with water, repeat. Even without drinking 40 is my max before palate fatigue sets in. Have to rinse or it would be only 20. Whole process 15 seconds per wine. Bring it in if it is a wow, price point does not matter. If it is less than a wow pass. I select all wines French and all sparkling wines. I give recommendations on all other areas, as I have one of the best palates around.

I love Ice Wines. They are strictly a dessert option but man are they good.

Spey is on it........... I have been to the area about 6x! Great beautiful place on earth plenty things to do and see,and a lot depends on your own interests!? As far as the wine goes you can prob fill three or four 8hr days tasting! Spey hit on a few but plenty more that have fantastic products and remember to appreciate some of the other grape varieties for what they are,and what you can enjoy them with? Some interesting older buildings there from some of the first few original wineries. Go up one side of the lake up the mountain come down the other, and you can do that with most of the lakes because of topography ! Which is why the many falls are so prominent ! There are a few combo wineries/breweries winx2!Tours abound, dinner on the water, sightseeing from the water, winery tours, where you leave the driving to someone sober, but limits your time and freedom to explore........ Rent a cycle, scooter,or nice sports cars and drive it hard on the beautiful landscape? The town of Corning is about a hour away, which has some interesting history of glass, cookware etc......I really wasnt sure what to expect at the glass center but was very interesting, with some serious old one of a kind pieces ! And a few good restaurants in Corning ,at least there was? Ithaca is a kool college town,Syracuse about hour away...... Biking and hiking galore! I didnt know if you noticed, but I recommend the area highly!

Just got back from NH and went on a winery tour and tasting there. 20 Years ago there was one or 2 wineries in the state, now there are around 20.
