It is sort of weird if you live there you get no meaningful representation. But I haven’t seen a serious effort.

Remember the outrage over the fixed primaries for Hill Dog? I agreed with it. Anyone outraged about any current decisions?

I think when they founded DC as the capital, there was an intent to make sure it never became a state.

Yup
And why should any single state have the benefit and burden of the federal government and all that goes with it?

Putting aside the obvious political ramifications ...that DC is very blue....I haven't heard a compelling argument against statehood.

I've generally been against DC statehood... For the ambiguous reason that it would make a specific state in the union also the Capitol.

But I have absolute confidence that the hypocrites claiming Dems only want it to add seats and electoral votes would demand it if DC were red.

I'm not sure of any other national capitals that are so separately handled.

Besides, DC is certainly a city, not a federal 'place'. But the fact that city legislation must be approved by our productive, efficient and respected Congress is nucking futz

I'm grateful for all the thoughtful debate. Does anyone have a coherent explanation for why they are opposed?

While they're at it, should probably go ahead and grant statehood to Puerto Rico, Guam, Samoa and USVI while they're at it. 'Territories' sound so colonialistic. If not state-worthy, just make Guam, Saipan and Samoa part of HI, and PR and USVI part of FL.....GITMO, too.....be fun to watch Russia and the Cubans chit their pants if we did that

Here is why I am opposed.

DC hasn't handled their franchise well as opposed to Marvel. Why reward incompetence?

Robert, interesting, though I think irrelevant to the question from a legal point of view.

Dave, no facts to back this up, but the constitution perhaps provides a framework. Shouldn't all Americans be treated equally? Just my thought, haven't even decided if it is my opinion. To me this is WGAF? Unless citizens of a protectorate vote to vote on statehood, of course. Though technically I don't know what DC is considered.

looks like it was because of a compromise between two heavyweights:

"First, it’s worth remembering that Washington, D.C. was not always the capital. George Washington first took office in New York City, and then the capital was moved to Philadelphia, where it remained for a decade. Washington, D.C. was founded as the capital in 1790 as a result of a compromise between Alexander Hamilton and northern states, and Thomas Jefferson and southern states. Hamilton’s economic policies consolidated power in the bankers and financiers who primarily lived in the North, so the compromise moved the capital physically more South, to appease Jefferson and southern leaders who feared northern control of the nation.

But the lack of statehood for the capital is enshrined in the Constitution. Article 1, Section 8, Clause 17 of the document reads, “The Congress shall have Power To …exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the Acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States.”

There was more, including commentary from Madison.

For what it's worth, I wouldn't mind removing Congress from the city's legislative business
