I've smoked so many different cigars from El Cheapos to Grand Duchies and everything in between. I'm on a budget called retirement so I don't splurge for the high end stuff too often unless I find a good bargain or realize a minor cash windfall like a tax refund.

I've been keeping a log of reviews in the past few years. Call me unsophisitcated or perhaps my sense of smell and taste have gone to where I'm headed in the afterlife, but I often can't tell the difference between one cigar and another. Maybe it's because I mostly smoke full bodied stuff. Everythng seems to have "notes of espresso and dark chocolate!"

Take a break.............7 days minimum.
Get some milder cigars in your rotation now and again.
There are smokeable ones for well under $2, and good ones in the $3 range, if you know where, when, and how.

You may not be getting enough water. Insufficient water intake greatly reduces the capabilities of your palate and nasal hardware (for retrohaling), which in turn greatly reduces your ability to fully taste, smell and enjoy good cigars.

Also you may want to switch your toothpaste to one that doesn't have certain chemicals common in mainstream toothpastes that hurt your palate's capabilities. Apparently foaming of toothpaste became associated in the public mind with "it's working!" which is not true, but manufacturers continue to put foaming agents into mainstream toothpastes to keep the deluded masses happy. These foaming agents, which don't help with cleaning, impair the palate. Switch to a toothpaste without them and your teeth will be just as clean, but cigars will taste much better and so will your food!

See this thread for more info on that:

Hope this helps. Also, try what KingoftheCove just said too!

Go to the gas station and buy a pack of the pineapple and a pack of the grape black & milds. Smoke those 3x a day alternating between the two for one week. After the week do not smoke no more until you get to where you do not have that awful aftertaste of pineapple or grape flavor and also where you do not smell the fake pineapple or grape flavoring. This typically takes approx. 1 month.

What this does is, it kills every single taste bud you have. It also destroys every bit of the olfactory nerve. The taste buds will rot and fall off your tongue and it will become as slick as Giner meat like Z's. (from what I have heard from some of the other guys on this forum that is a good thing).

Once all this takes place then you can go back to your routine of cigars then you are only limited by your imagination. Smoke one and imagine Waffles and it will taste like waffles, Imagine cow chit it will taste like cow chit. Etc and so on

Personally, I would just do what the other guys said. ThumpUp

I’ve been using CloSys toothpaste and mouthwash for 3-4 years now. Been so long that I can’t remember if it made a difference as far as smoking goes but one thing I can confirm is that my teeth aren’t as stained as before. I used to have some really bad coffee stains between my teeth and although I still have some, noticeably less.

well it's been a few months instead of weeks................anyways.......I feel like Puddin may be on to something.

I've been using "the Natural Dentist" tooth paste (charcoal whitening, no SLS and similar stuff) since I posted above (Feb, 2019)

Could simply be a placebo effect, but I feel like I'm getting more flavors out my cigars.
Also, I just like the tooth paste better for several other reasons as well.
My Crest, Colgate, etc. days are over..........forever.

Great! Glad it helped!

One thing you can do, in the name of science, is to switch back to a mainstream toothpaste for awhile, and see if cigars taste crappy again, then once again go back to what you're using now and see if cigars taste better again.

Once might be a fluke, but repeatedly seeing the same changes gives more confidence that it's a real correlation.

Me though, I'd probably skip that, and simply never look back.

My thoughts exactly. Well, except for that last sentence (I don't want the bar association pulling my license for encouraging illegal behavior).

This reminds me a bit of the sort of question we used to see around here years back, "Everyone says this [cigar in question] is a terrible cigar, but I really like them and I can get these cigars for about $2 on this site. Is it wrong that I enjoy these?"

Smoke what you like. The best "curse" any cigar smoker can suffer, IMHO, is to like an inexpensive cigar no one else really runs after at auction. It's a pseudo-problem, like having too much money. If you can't tell the difference between a $2 cigar and a $20 cigar and you like them both equally, get the $2 cigars. Unless you have too much money, that is, then send me a bunch of it THEN buy the $2 cigars.

I found "hello" at the Walmart. They have several varieties to include activated charcoal, but I don't know about black toothpaste. Think

So I'm giving this a go as well. We well see.

LOL. Get some of that novelty gum that turns the chewer's teeth black. Sport that black teeth look all day. Bet people at work or out in the community won't bother you then.

BTW, I have two aquariums full of fish, and several filters where I use charcoal. My fish seem to have shiny teeth. Then again, it's tough to smoke underwater.

Puddin is a cigar nerd and has funny knees. Palama has noticeably less teeth. Brush 'em if ya got 'em. Gunner likes the Walmart greeter. Did I miss anything ?

Update. We're right at a month of the new "hello" toothpaste now.

Damned if this stuff doesn't work. My coffee is back to tasting good, and I'm getting a lot more nuance out of my cigars now too.

I have to give this two thumbs up. I would say it's worth giving a shot based on what I've tasted so far. The stuff tastes ok, works good, is comparably priced, and let's me enjoy my vices better.

The best part? It's not any less effective than the mainstream toothpastes with SLS and its related compounds. All they do is make foam, because consumers have been conditioned to think that a toothpaste must foam up to be effective, which is completely false. Perception is hugely important in consumer psychology and can massively affect sales even if something is totally baseless factually and scientifically.

I'm glad you're seeing the same improvements I did!

Not everything I pass along is useful, but I like to think some things are.

Here's a great one, unrelated to cigars. Some of you may know this, but I've found that the vast majority of people, rather UNBELIEVABLY, do not! You know a car's "blind spot"? You know how in recent years carmakers have offered "blind spot detection" systems that use a radar transceiver, control chips, LED indicators, audible buzzers, etc. to tell you when there's a car in the blind spot? Boy, that's a lot of expense and extra stuff to break. Gee, if only there were an easier way to see the entire contents of the blind spot before you change lanes, perhaps a way that works in ALL cars ever made with zero modifications and which costs absolutely nothing?

Well, there is. Someone told my Dad about it in 1955, and he told me when I learned to drive in the 1980s. Simply LEAN FORWARD while looking into the side mirror! You see everything in the blind spot! No incredibly idiotically unnecessary and expensive radar system overkill needed, LOL!

And another, which a relative of mine, a registered nurse, used at the hospital hundreds of times over several decades, shocking several doctors (who didn't know this trick).... do you have hiccups? Eat a spoonful of sugar. Within 60 seconds, hiccups gone. Every time!

Try tongue cleaner with a tongue brush. It will do miracles for your sense of taste. Use it on a daily basis. This is also great at decreasing bad breath.
