So I've received a few noob hits lately and they all go in the same box. Recently spotted both green and white mold inside some cello on some sticks. This box has been steady 70/70 for years, never had a problem before.

If you receive a box from someone you don't know well, be careful. I suggest freezing and setting aside a box for new sticks from new people..... just to be safe. Nothing major lost but could have been bad if I didn't have that box specifically for noob sticks.

We now return you to our regularly scheduled program. That green stuff is bad......

Mold is more than likely caused by the 70/70 environment you have them in.Drop that RH to 63-65 and your mold issue is resolved.

Now on the subject of freezing sticks......I highly recommend freezing(0 F or below) every stick, regardless of source for no less than 72 hours,a beetle egg present in any stick can lay dormant til the right conditions are met and 70/70 is that perfect hatching environment.Freezing destroys any beetles or eggs present once and for all. This will not prevent mold in the future but it will prevent beetle outbreaks. It's best to start early in this game...….as that stash grows in becomes increasingly important to protect your investment.

Ron, you are a source of constant joy. Damn I hate thinking about beetles.

I concur though, I don't think freezing will prevent mold re-occurrences. Spores are really really good at persisting.

-15 would kill most mold.

The problem is, it would not have any effect on the spores. Mold spores can survive very extreme environmental conditions. If the spores survive, the mold will come back as soon as conditions are right -- moisture, a bit of heat, and some food. The food is still there, once the heat is back on and there is just a bit of moisture you can expect to see the mold thrive once again.

Just remember...….my warnings are from experience and it's not a pleasant experience.

You could freeze the same sticks monthly but if you run your RH too high you're going to have mold.I personally run no higher than 63% but prefer the lower 60%.Cigars smoke better down in this range.....I never have to dry box.

That's probably what caused the bloom but my point was they just arrived. As I mentioned 70/70 for years. no problems. Suddenly both types of mold at once. So now it's sanding, alcohol, testing time. A pain in the butt.

Never had a mold outbreak, hope not to but if you know who caused it they should be castrated and ostracized.
