It was an exchange for syphilis.

Quote:

New skeletal evidence suggests Columbus and his crew not only introduced the Old World to the New World, but brought back syphilis as well, researchers say.

but never saw North America.
and the Stock Market was closed in honor.
also, moved my trash and recycle pick up out one day.

Growing up near Boston, Wednesday was Prince Spaghetti day. We can get rid of Columbus Day.

I'm sick of all the whining about Columbus Day.

A quick google will tell us that it was originally intended as a celebration for Italian Americans. Later it was an attempt to help integrate them.
Never once was it celebrated because Columbus took slaves and attacked indigenous people on the islands he visited.
With that said, it's a bogus holiday intended for government employees only.

So for anyone who is somehow offended, fine. Vote to get rid of the holiday altogether.
Don't be such a pu$$y that you want to change it to something less offensive. that's a f*cking joke.
Grow some cajones and be willing to let go of this bogus day off.
Or else STFU.

I'm offended AND outraged that TG is offended by the offended. We could change it to CROS day.

HA! I knew you'd step up.
I love having an Italian holiday, but he didn't even represent his own country!
How about changing it to Tony Conigliaro Day?

Not so fast there all you whippersnappers! Me and the other 11 kids in our one room schoolhouse enjoyed getting that extra day off in the school year...not to mention another day or two a month when the schoolmarm was feeling ill.

Probably the gonorrhea. Sphillis is pretty much non-symptomatic until it's way too late to help. Shame on you

I'm on record that I'm fine with eliminating the holiday.

But anyone who wants to replace it with something else is useless snowflake.

Now we just have to wait.

Frank, how long before Mayor Marty Walsh petitions to change the name of Christopher Columbus Park on the waterfront?

he'd nevah suggest it. The ghost of Mumbles Menino would haunt him.
but he'd cave in to a groundswell movement, whatever that is.

cuz he mostly struck out.

my father told me that when Joe and Dom played for the Yankees and Red Sox repectively, there was a little local jingle...
"who's better than his brother Joe?
Dominic DiMaggio"

he wasn't of course, but he was a pretty good ball player.

3 Boyers played in the Bigs (Cloyd is the one no one remembers) and 4 other brothers played in the minors!

But...not Italian. As far as I know.

Local area ball player here was Steve Blass. Our Little League field as named after him. His class and a couple around it provided some decent pitchers of which he was the most successful.
