Got these ROTT and did a quick random humidity test. The left is a cello wrapped pack and the right one came out of a zip seal bag. The left reads 57 and the right reads 58. So yeah def needs some rest time to get back up to 65+ relative humidity.

I'll post a few more random tests here as I get them.

Yeah, cigars through the mail and generally any transport have a rough life. I was tempted by these when I first saw them reviewed by Tim but I just think about how many more cigars I can buy with that money and never get one.

The amount I spend on sticks makes the meter cost negligible lol

I usually have an allowance for cigars but I overspent this month. A different site had a good deal on AJ Fernandez Montecristos which is the first full body that taught me I love full body and I had to pull the trigger.

I hate to break it to you. But a $30 Hygrometer is not going to give you very accurate RH readings. You're in the stadium at best. Also, don't sweat a few % RH. If the cigar smokes well to you then it's properly "hydrated". The whole 70/70 thing is just a set of numbers pulled out of someone's A-hole.
Use your own tastes to determine what's RIGHT vs. WRONG. fog

Yup.

I don't use hygrometers anymore. 65% beads and Bovedas, and don't smoke anything till it's been sitting in there for a good long while. It's worked out well for several years.

It's actually pretty accurate. I've pulled several sticks that have been sitting for months with 69% boveda and every one of them read 68-69%

You probably don't want to but if they are easy to take apart (and put back together) you could look up the chips they are using to see the tolerance on them. I imagine it is +/- 2% though.

+1

When I first started, I spent too much time worrying about the hygrometer accuracy so once I “set myself free”, it was liberating.

Whole heartedly. I don't think they're related though.

I wonder if he needs a quality control manager. It would be a hands on position, but I’m sure I could handle it, them.

After many years I have found cigars kept between 58-63% age as well as those kept at 70% but have less chance of mold issues and smoke waaaaaay better straight out the humi.

I am not sure about going as low as 58% but in Florida 70% is way too high. I stopped doing 70% months ago because things quit burning halfway through.

Checking my phone here, the windador is 61.3 F @ 66.8% RF. That is cellar temp with a mix of 65% heartfelt beads and some bovedas.

Now that I've got about 6 months of time hanging here, and figured out how to actually do this, rather than cycling between "Crap, they're dried out" to "oops, soggy, too much" my smoking experience is much better. I really do thank you all.

Except Rich, he's just a pain in the ass. BigGrin

I am liking the Govee bluetooth mini sensor. Little thing just sits there. Connects to the phone app via bluetooth. Took about a day to settle down and connect but it's working good now.

When my RH hits 58% I top off my water crystal tubs with distilled water. If we get rain 3-4 days in a row(West Texas so 3-4 days in a row is rare indeed) my RH might jump to 65 but I've never seen it go over that. This time of year with the heater going I replenish the water every couple weeks. My humi is a converted walk in closet, bout 80% of the walls are covered in Spanish cedar and the flooring is hardwood.

So you would say your average RH is higher than 58%? The number scares me but I understand if you let it get that low for a day before refilling with water. I am still new to this if you consider 1 year new so to me a preference of 58% sounds like it would burn way too fast.

No higher than 63% is my goal but letting it fall to 58% before refilling seems to have no ill effect.I seriously hate wet over humidified cigars...….they burn schitty and taste even worse. When I hear people talking about dry boxing all I can say is...…..keep your humi at a lower RH.
