When it comes to bull****, big-time, major league bull****, you have to stand in awe of the all-time champion of false promises and exaggerated claims, religion. No contest. No contest. Religion. Religion easily has the greatest bull**** story ever told. Think about it. Religion has actually convinced people that there’s an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever ’til the end of time!

But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money! He’s all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can’t handle money! Religion takes in billions of dollars, they pay no taxes, and they always need a little more. Now, you talk about a good bull**** story. Holy ****!

But I want you to know something, this is sincere, I want you to know, when it comes to believing in God, I really tried. I really, really tried. I tried to believe that there is a God, who created each of us in His own image and likeness, loves us very much, and keeps a close eye on things. I really tried to believe that, but I gotta tell you, the longer you live, the more you look around, the more you realize, something is fucked up.

Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed. Results like these do not belong on the résumé of a Supreme Being. This is the kind of **** you’d expect from an office temp with a bad attitude. And just between you and me, in any decently-run universe, this guy would’ve been out on his all-powerful ass a long time ago. And by the way, I say “this guy”, because I firmly believe, looking at these results, that if there is a God, it has to be a man.

No woman could or would ever **** things up like this. So, if there is a God, I think most reasonable people might agree that he’s at least incompetent, and maybe, just maybe, doesn’t give a ****. Doesn’t give a ****, which I admire in a person, and which would explain a lot of these bad results.

So rather than be just another mindless religious robot, mindlessly and aimlessly and blindly believing that all of this is in the hands of some spooky incompetent father figure who doesn’t give a ****, I decided to look around for something else to worship. Something I could really count on.

And immediately, I thought of the sun. Happened like that. Overnight I became a sun-worshipper. Well, not overnight, you can’t see the sun at night. But first thing the next morning, I became a sun-worshipper. Several reasons. First of all, I can see the sun, okay? Unlike some other gods I could mention, I can actually see the sun. I’m big on that. If I can see something, I don’t know, it kind of helps the credibility along, you know? So everyday I can see the sun, as it gives me everything I need; heat, light, food, flowers in the park, reflections on the lake, an occasional skin cancer, but hey. At least there are no crucifixions, and we’re not setting people on fire simply because they don’t agree with us.

Sun worship is fairly simple. There’s no mystery, no miracles, no pageantry, no one asks for money, there are no songs to learn, and we don’t have a special building where we all gather once a week to compare clothing. And the best thing about the sun, it never tells me I’m unworthy. Doesn’t tell me I’m a bad person who needs to be saved. Hasn’t said an unkind word. Treats me fine. So, I worship the sun. But, I don’t pray to the sun. Know why? I wouldn’t presume on our friendship. It’s not polite.

I’ve often thought people treat God rather rudely, don’t you? Asking trillions and trillions of prayers every day. Asking and pleading and begging for favors. Do this, gimme that, I need a new car, I want a better job. And most of this praying takes place on Sunday His day off. It’s not nice. And it’s no way to treat a friend.

But people do pray, and they pray for a lot of different things, you know, your sister needs an operation on her crotch, your brother was arrested for defecating in a mall. But most of all, you’d really like to **** that hot little redhead down at the convenience store. You know, the one with the eyepatch and the clubfoot? Can you pray for that? I think you’d have to. And I say, fine. Pray for anything you want. Pray for anything, but what about the Divine Plan?

Remember that? The Divine Plan. Long time ago, God made a Divine Plan. Gave it a lot of thought, decided it was a good plan, put it into practice. And for billions and billions of years, the Divine Plan has been doing just fine. Now, you come along, and pray for something. Well suppose the thing you want isn’t in God’s Divine Plan? What do you want Him to do? Change His plan? Just for you? Doesn’t it seem a little arrogant? It’s a Divine Plan. What’s the use of being God if every run-down shmuck with a two-dollar prayerbook can come along and **** up Your Plan?

And here’s something else, another problem you might have: Suppose your prayers aren’t answered. What do you say? “Well, it’s God’s will.” “Thy Will Be Done.” Fine, but if it’s God’s will, and He’s going to do what He wants to anyway, why the **** bother praying in the first place? Seems like a big waste of time to me! Couldn’t you just skip the praying part and go right to His Will? It’s all very confusing.

So to get around a lot of this, I decided to worship the sun. But, as I said, I don’t pray to the sun. You know who I pray to? Joe Pesci. Two reasons: First of all, I think he’s a good actor, okay? To me, that counts. Second, he looks like a guy who can get things done. Joe Pesci doesn’t **** around. In fact, Joe Pesci came through on a couple of things that God was having trouble with.
For years I asked God to do something about my noisy neighbor with the barking dog, Joe Pesci straightened that **** out with one visit. It’s amazing what you can accomplish with a simple baseball bat.
So I’ve been praying to Joe for about a year now. And I noticed something. I noticed that all the prayers I used to offer to God, and all the prayers I now offer to Joe Pesci, are being answered at about the same 50% rate. Half the time I get what I want, half the time I don’t. Same as God, 50-50. Same as the four-leaf clover and the horseshoe, the wishing well and the rabbit’s foot, same as the Mojo Man, same as the Voodoo Lady who tells you your fortune by squeezing the goat’s testicles, it’s all the same: 50-50. So just pick your superstition, sit back, make a wish, and enjoy yourself.

And for those of you who look to The Bible for moral lessons and literary qualities, I might suggest a couple of other stories for you. You might want to look at the Three Little Pigs, that’s a good one. Has a nice happy ending, I’m sure you’ll like that. Then there’s Little Red Riding Hood, although it does have that X-rated part where the Big Bad Wolf actually eats the grandmother. Which I didn’t care for, by the way. And finally, I’ve always drawn a great deal of moral comfort from Humpty Dumpty. The part I like the best? “All the king’s horses and all the king’s men couldn’t put Humpty Dumpty back together again.” That’s because there is no Humpty Dumpty, and there is no God. None, not one, no God, never was.

The only heaven we can hope for is one here on earth, now. We should stop waiting to get into heaven and start trying to create it.

My parents sent me to private Christian schools, made us do church twice every Sunday, couldn't play outside on the lord's day, hour of bible time every day, church youth groups and stuff.

I argued constantly with the church folk. I always felt that the concepts were ok, but the execution flawed. The hatred and abuse coming from the church, in God's name. The hounding for money from the church leaders. Trying to tell kids they'll burn in hell forever if they play with their ******. The horribly flawed education/indoctrination to keep the people in perpetual submission.

I always thought of heaven and hell as the peace you have with how you live your life. That argument along with many others led to me being kicked out of Sunday school, youth groups, bible class at school, eventually school itself, and my parents house.

So much for loving everyone and stuff. Well, everyone except the gays, and the colored folk, and the bums the pastor would spray with a hose to get them outta the garage, and the list goes on.

The church, and by that I include all organized religion is an abusive corporation that exists to control and exploit the people who put their trust, their faith in it.

This is why GOD created Satan. To teach between good and evil. To show mortal man that believing in HIM is the way to eternal life.

If there was only “good” man would never know the difference

I simply do not agree with you on this, Ray. I don't need a bible or religious teachings to know how to be a "good person." I don't believe in the Christian concept of God. I believe in you. I believe YOU are a good person and would be if the concept of religion wasn't a thing. I don't believe it takes a mythical sky being to make Ray a good person. However, I also have no desire or reason to belittle or even doubt your faith. I can respect it and move on. It's only when religious beliefs or principles start interfering with my life or that of others that I will argue....and fight

I believe in God, that God created the heavens and the earth as well as all the creatures on earth, including mankind. At the same time I believe religion is a creation of mankind. There are a lot of similar religions that pretty much follow the Golden Rule and use various forms of guilt to keep you on line. Not totally a bad thing as long as one religion never has control of everyone, the more religions the better.

While I call myself a Christian, I do struggle with the concept that Jesus died and appeased all the sins of those that accept him as their savior, it conflicts with my concept of personal responsibility, but it is a sweat deal.

I hate to think of death as final though I do not believe in ghosts the concept of heaven and hell makes living easier.

Mankind is born with free will, to be good or bad (The God particle?); it's up to the individual to chose.

Bad things happen to good people, even innocent babies. I do not believe it's, "God's will." I believe you occasionally win the unlucky lottery and sometimes you win the lucky lottery.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy My brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay My vengeance upon you.

Well crap, you sucked me in. While I don't want to do a war and peace like Dan, I'll say this.

Frankly, organized religions are the biggest organized crime and sometimes terrorist organizations on Earth. They're all as corrupt as politicians. Same ilk. And if you really study their doctrines there is only about 4 degrees of separation between all of them. They're all essentially splinters of each other.

Now, having said that. I do not doubt the existence of a deity/power of some sort. I spent too many years in some woe be gotten hell holes and saw what had to be miraculous events that had to have had a guiding hand. Lives saved, folks healed, just things that should not have happened but did. Not heavens singing and ponds parting, but simply miraculous outcomes of some incredibly bad situations.

I believe in "God". A god. Not sure what to call it, but I believe it's there. And I don't need to go to some fancy building and listen to some duded up "holy man" to commune with it.

Live your life the way you want, don't **** on others, and don't allow yourself to be **** on. Watch out for those that can't help themselves, don't be mean to animals.

I'd say that about covers it in my world.

There are those who think that life
has nothing left to chance
A host of holy horrors
to direct our aimless dance
A planet of playthings
we dance on the strings
of powers we cannot perceive
"the stars aren't aligned ---
or the gods are malign"
blame is better to give than receive
You can choose a ready guide
in some celestial voice
if you choose not to decide
you still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears
and kindness that can kill
i will choose a path that's clear
i will choose free will
There are those who think that they've been dealt a losing hand
the cards were stacked against them ---
they weren't born in lotus-land
All preordained
a prisoner in chains
a victim of venomous fate
kicked in the face
you can't pray for a place
in heaven's unearthly estate

You can choose a ready guide
in some celestial voice
if you choose not to decide
you still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears
and kindness that can kill
i will choose a path that's clear
i will choose free will

Each of us
a cell of awareness
imperfect and incomplete!
genetic blends
with uncertain ends
on a fortune hunt
that's far too fleet...

You can choose a ready guide
in some celestial voice
if you choose not to decide
you still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears
and kindness that can kill
i will choose a path that's clear
i wI’ll chose free will

I was driving home late one Sunday evening through Bakersfield, CA
listening to gospel music on the colored radio station
I heard the preacher say, "you know you always have the Lord by your side"
And I was so pleased to be informed of this that I ran
twenty red lights in his honor
thank you Jesus, thank you Lord

You know I had an arrangement to meet a girl, and I was kind of late
And I thought by the time I got there she'd be off with
the nearest truck driver she could find
But when I got there, there she was, much to my surprise, sitting in the corner, a little worse for wear and tear
Was the girl with the far away eyes

So if you're down on your luck
And you can't harmonize
Get a girl with the far away
And if you're downright disgusted
And life ain't worth a dime
Get a girl with thefar away eyes

Well the preacher went right on saying that all I had to do was send Twenty dollars to the church of the sacred bleeding heart of Jesus
located somewhere in Los Angeles, CA
And the next day they'd say my prayer on the radio station and all my dreams would come true
So I did
The next day, I got a prayer for the girl
Well, you know what kind of eyes she got

So if you're down on your luck
I know you all sympathize
Find a girl with the far away eyes
And if you're downright disgusted
And life ain't worth a dime
Get a girl with the far away eyes
So if you're down on your luck
I know you all sympathize
Get a girl with the far away eyes
eyes
Get a girl with the far away eyes

I do believe in God. Don't believe in hell. All the evil we see in the world is man's fault. When the Messiah finally comes, the evil will subside. God gave man free will and does not control or watch every second of each of our lives. When God wants to work around man's free will or to intervene to chance the course of events, he does. We call this a miracle...

There is something up/out there and we are all individual packets of energy. Energy is never really destroyed but it does morph and move on. We are not really even what we were a year ago let alone in our youth. That energy in its entirety will eventually move on to something or somethings else.

As for the men in the fancy silks with rooms of gold and priceless treasure asking the masses to give them more.... Brilliant!!!! I tip my hat to you. You are smart and it’s a great gig. If they choose to tithe their income to you that’s their choice and you can certainly take it. Free will and all.

On the other hand there are more modest and sincere messengers preaching a similar message. I’m with them and believe much of the story makes sense and is even beautiful . I’m with them as long as they stay out of my pockets and don’t preach the basic tenant of faith is giving them my things.

I went to the Vatican a couple years ago. Their riches are jaw dropping. Not just the gold and the monetary resources but the priceless art and artifacts literally stacked and stored because there is far to much to display within their enormous space. Loved it, it’s beautiful. And as long as they can get people to keep giving I have no issue with their taking. Throughout Europe the best places to visit are the churches and their riches. So we did, and would again.

As an aside I’ve attended in person a mass by a man that is now canonized as a saint. I think he was just a person like me. But if he’s a saint that has to improve my standing.

Politics is much like religion. Right now we have folks contorting their own religions to support political figures and positions they know do not fit their actual stated religious beliefs. In this regard Christians Jews and Muslims are very similar.

Although it's impossible to prove God or no God, after examining the evidence I believe God ss the best explanation for why there is something rather than nothing.

I further believe that Jesus being God incarnate is the best explanation for what the heck happened ~2000 years ago in the middle east.

If this is all there is then nothing really matters, we are insignificant and truth is a construct at best. Hence Nietzsche going crazy.

I will contribute no further to this thread.

I believe that there is probably some type of divine presence in the universe. But our puny human brains could never even begin to comprehend what it is/what it wants/what makes it happy/etc. And I believe that the greatest example of the ignorance and arrogance of man is in claiming to know what god wants.

Also, there is zero evidence that Jesus was a real person. Zero. None. There aren't even any Roman records of Jesus, and the Romans kept records of everything.

When people go off on an incoherent rant about how stupid religion is, or that it's a scam, or that it's BS, I have to wonder if it's organized religion or faith in general that makes them so sensitive.

I was brought up Catholic. Meaning I have no clue about other religions. But I no longer subscribe to the concept of the Church. Heck, I recently visited the Vatican and was kinda glad the Pope wasn't there till the next day so I could avoid the crowds.

With that said, I have a deep faith in God. My God. And I'm happy for you if you have your own. Or none.

Jesus was indeed a real person and there were throngs of people that can witness his preachings/teachings, his miracles and so much more! The Romans, Egyptians, And Israelites to start with, have written of HIM.
