La Perla, anyone try them?

What's the story with the brand?

Are they any good?

Never smoked one.
Best advice I can give is get a fiver or two and try 'em. Regardless of anybody else's opinion, you might like them.

I've only had the 1515's with the long ceder foot band but they are technically made by AJ Fernandez. They were good but I am not sure if that is helpful.

Although you can at times find them being sold elsewhere (when, seemingly, inventory is dumped on the open market), The La Perla is effectively an internet-only "house brand" of Cigars International and its parent and affiliated companies.

I have not tried the 1515's but I did smoke several of what turned out to be the 1515 "prototypes" -- the old Blendlab PH-650. It was a pretty good cigar but not, according to my notes, amazingly great. I should try the 1515 sometime though since I do like most of what AJ puts out.

Of the rest of the line, the Morado was the best that I have tried and the only one with any real decent flavor. The rest have been just, "Meh." They often show up in samplers or freebie deals.

However, do not be fooled by any of the advertised ratings like "93 rated" or "#__ Cigar of the year" for any in this line, especially the La Perla Habana Morado. These ratings were from many years ago and the current blend is nothing like the blend that won any of the accolades or ratings. I never had one but people around here used to say the original release (2007?) Morado WAS a great cigar, then the packaging and blend changed to what is now a bargain basement internet smoke.

The current Morados do not burn very long and, while they taste fine, they are not a "93" level smoke.

That being said, I used to pick up the Morado's back when you could actually get get them on Cbid for $1-1.50 per cigar WITH shipping! For that price - and fully aware that this was NOT the "93-rated" blend - that they were simply a good 40 min. smoke - I was more than happy with them. Now they seem to go for more than $3 BEFORE shipping and I can get a lot of better cigars here and elsewhere for that. Again, if you can get them here or elsewhere for right at or under $2 per with shipping, I would say they would be worth a try.

More than that and I would rather have those Class 34's or Nicaraguan 2nds for around $2 per WITH shipping at the Tenskie Place. Or pick up the Oliva Master Blend sample pack you can find on sale often at several sites including on Free fall here: https://www.cigarbid.com...3-mega-sampler/3438785/ Just wait several cycles until the price gets down to below $58, then with $6.95 shipping you have a really good deal on a cigar that is FAR better than any La Perla I have ever had.

Somewhere on here there was a huge thread with people going apoplectic about how misleading it is to still advertise the "90" and "93" ratings on these cigars since the ones being sold now are NOT even close to the same cigar. Not the same tobacco, not the same construction.I would search for it, but I'm too lazy....

I have had better AJs but these were worth the smoke. Not anything to rave about but not bad either. This is what I have 2x left of in my humi if you want to go looking for them: https://www.cigarbid.com...na-1515-torpedo/3341754/

I've smoked many of he La Perla including the Morado of 2-3 years ago. There were some I used to like, but they too have gone south. The 1515 was OK, but nothing more than a yard gar. As far as I know they make nothing I would call good. For a buck I might buy some, but that's about as high as I would go for this line of yard gars. I still have a few of the recent Morados and I might fire one up with this weekend's warm up.

OK, thanks for the input everyone!

Midmofan, do all blenders do this with their cigars 3-5 years after introducing them? If my MF Le Bijou ever change, I might cry.

Not all, but it is way too common. Many times what happens is if a cigar becomes super popular, they rush to make as many more as they can and quality suffers. Other times a big company like General buys out a small boutique maker and messes with things to increase profits. Sometimes it's just calculated shenanigans, bait and switch on the gullible customers.

Rocky Patel, by their own admission, fell in to that first category badly.

Cao, Camacho, Ramon Bueso, Man O' War, Punch and others all had some great releases I liked a lot, but that went noticably downhill at some point.

The La Perla, unfortunately, is pretty much shenanigans...

There was a member here who claimed that the Brazilian was the best cigar, so it has become a running joke. They are OK, but nothing special.

Here's the problem. Sometimes when a company goes out of business, or a cigar is retired, the owner will sell the rights to the label to one of the big online retailers. This is what happened to La Perla. Sometimes the new owner will try to continue the original blend, and sometimes they will just slap the label on whatever. La Perla use to be a very good line of cigars that won many high ratings. Today it is an economy cigar. But for a buck or so, you may enjoy them. Somewhere on here there is an old thread where I smoked an original Morado side to side with the new blend. The new blend wasn't horrible, it just paled next to the OR.

Pretty sure I still have at least a partial box of those left and maybe an unopened. We have Brother Newell for catching those and tipping us off, all those years ago. Thanks again. I need to do some serious cigar box Tetris and dig to the bottom of my coolidors.

I fear some of the boxes may have turned into "airballs".

hehe, keep it up, I got sump'n for you when I do!!!!!

And, I ain't talking about alphabetizing the boxes either, I honestly haven't done a serious shuffle in years, but I know exactly what I'm doing with one of the boxes that I know is still hiding in one of those coolers!!!

With four 150 qt. cooler as the biggest of the six, I get a backache EVERY time I just try to make room for the few boxes that I've bothered to order over the last 2-3 years.

From my experience, the ones I have had were not at all good when new. I also had a couple that sat in my humidor for years that I found very enjoyable.

I honestly don't remember which variations I have had though. So my general comment is pretty general.... :p

The original 1515's many years ago WERE EXCELLENT CIGARS...R.O.T T. TOO...

THEY WERE SO GOOD...I SMOKED THEM ALL WITHIN ONE OR TWO YEARS...

I don't know how good they are recently?
I think I had one about a year ago in a sampler...
It was decent but nothing like the original blend.

FACTS ABOUT the current batches of La Perla Habana Cigars:

The La Perla Habana Original, Morado, Rojo, Classic, Classic Maduro, Cobre, Oro are all generic cigars that are below average but smokeable.

The WIDE is an AVERAGE darkie and the White Pearl is a good, decent Connecticut wrapped cigar =2 Macanudo.

The 1515 is a very good Habano wrapped cigar and is the ONLY blend the brand currently makes that is worth a $2.80 per cigar Max Bid here at CigarBid.
