Certain industries absolutely hire illegals.

I called you out on "large corporations" because it's inaccurate.
So it's not that I'd "feel better". But that your comment would be accurate.
And what good is a tripod if he's not a straight shooter?

agree, not a reason to allow law breaking activity...which is why I asked if maybe current laws are not designed to give us what we really want.

You list a couple of good starting points if we do want it the way the laws are written, in the meantime how can we catch, fine heavily, and force those employers (who are pretty much recruiting them) to pay the taxes until something changes?

take away the bait and the rest might fix itself...unless we discover our economy might actually be built on the backs of cheap labor. I've never been in a position to know for sure. But obviously I suspect it must be the reason it happens.

do most of us at least agree most illegals risk life because they want to work here, not for free hot breakfast? Can we get a win/win from it?

I've been self employed but was never a business man.

I think the prospect of work opportunities was the major factor for decades.
But nowadays it seems those crossing illegally know more about the legal loop holes than they know about how to hold a job. They know about anchor babies. About sanctuary cities. They know where to get a fake SSN and how to receive welfare and which hospitals are best for getting free care.

I hate how cynical my above post is, but talk to anyone in the larger cities even here in MA.
I've got several Portuguese employees who grew up in Fall River and New Bedford. You should hear the stories on how few come here to work full time.

Mexico is a great example of win-win strategies...we worked with them to build their economy to give Mexican citizens incentive to stay and work at home...we've cut the number of border crossers from Mexico way down, have a valuable trade partner next door, and a strong geo-political ally....

if only we had the will to repeat the process for Honduras, and Guatemala, countries whose citizens crossing our border exceeds those from Mexico, which now stands in third place...El Salvador is fourth

maybe, maybe.

I'm from here and knew nothing of these great opportunities, so I do wonder how the menu of freebies reached illiterate families living under oppressive regimes in impoverished conditions likely without cable tv or free press, how they heard enough to pack up and walk 1500 miles for free breakfast programs...and stuff.

I keed, I keed, a little.
I still think, with absolutely zero evidence but a feeling about human survival instincts and natural desire to improve one's family's lot in life, that most come for the opportunity.

We have people born here who think the handouts are da bomb (do the kids still say that?) but most instinctively know there is better available in this country. I really struggle to believe that most take that looooong walk and risk life itself just for freebies.

Haven't been to New Beige in ages. You know a great storefront Port-a-gee seafood joint where we can meet?

Preferably somewhere with illeg...uh I mean undocumented waitresses so we don't have to tip 20%...I keed again.
But do ya?

Maybe the original intent is "opportunities".
But the net result after they arrive is quite different.

I very rarely go into NB. Last time was the registry for my son's driving test.
If I'm in that area of the coast I'd head into Mattapoissett. Some decent places near the water.

So this meandered for 100 posts into nonsense about immigration.

But no one has explained to me why the NY DMV is necessary for a any of those trusted travelers things...

Did they not allow anyone to be a trusted traveler who didn't have a driver's license? It's NY.... There are plenty of people there who never drive, and may just have a passport. Are those people unable to get one of these global entry things?

amazed we haven't starved to death yet.

before I reread, does this have to do with Trump trying to punish New York?

Oh I doubt he can find NY on a map. But this is thought to be retaliation from DHS...
