I had several hundred of them about 20 years ago and had trouble giving them away. Took them all to flea market one day and sold the lot for $ 20. Celebration time !

One of our engineers at work is Chinese. An honest to God mainland Chinese immigrant. Her and her husband, their son still lives there and teaches school. (Hostage? Who knows. I figure she has to be doing espionage of some sort.) Anyway, she comes into work Monday and casually mentions "Lucky, my husband came back from China right before they canceled the flights." Yep. Two days come to find out. LOL

The company, at the instigation of the other engineers in the office, pretty much told her she needed to go home, right now, and telecommute for at least 2 more weeks until they're sure her husband is healthy and frog walked her out the door.

So for the last couple of days I've been walking around responding to that story "Really? I just run into them at the Wal-Mart!" and sneezing. LOL. I have my privacy back. BigGrin

Just a little bump....
Chit is spiraling just about how many were figuring it would.

Don’t worry though.........the flu is worse.........

Here’s the difference azzhats.
-This “bug” is novel to us.........
- 20+ percent of infected need critical care
- 2% death rate.......currently

Once health care systems are overloaded, which won’t take long.......death rate will climb to 10+ percent in western countries, 25+%, in many other places.

Economic and social impact?
Heh.........that’s where the REAL chit will happen.

Things in China are waaaay worse than most want to believe.
That nonsense about new case numbers there going down? Total BS.
Now it’s taking hold all over.

I’ll bump this thread again in a couple weeks, and we’ll see where we are...

Praying for an efficacious vaccine (but I thinks it’s already too late)....

When you get the shot for Coronavirus, be sure to get one for Lyme disease as well. Nothing like corona and lyme.

"Novel" to us isn't a real issue. Every flu virus is "novel" to us. That's why we need a vaccine every year. This is a modification of the same virus that gives us SARS, MERS and the common cold. There's a wide range of infectiousness and fatality in the pedigree.

People infected need to be cared for, and yes, if it spreads to the US it will have an impact on our health infrastructure. But to think that'll cause it to climb to 25% death rate is way too optimistic. I doubt in the end we'll climb much above 5%

The most interesting thing about this one is the infectiousness. People are carrying it without any symptoms, and spreading it.

And ironically, China has done a decent job (and is continuing to do so) of locking it down. When I talk to my friends there, everyone is essentially kept in their apartment buildings. People aren't going to work. Households are allowed to assign 1 person who may leave the house 1 day a week to get groceries. This is a level of national quarantine which would be impossible in the US. It has spread from china already though, so their efforts are a bit like closing the barn door after the horse escaped (from a global perspective at least).

Anyway... we can check back on this in a month

Well it’s “novel” in that vaccine development is much more difficult to execute quickly.
And as far as China doing a “decent” job in locking it down?
Heh.........guess it depends on how one defines “decent”. My sources paint a slightly different image than yours regarding the situation there.

And yes, the transmissibility of the virus is just another reason things may get out of control.

I’m really hoping your estimation of the next 3-6 months are correct...........actually really praying they are.
Like I said initially, it’s not so much the disease itself that concerns me, it’s the ancillary domino effects.

No reason to stock up on bottled water. Just hit any water with a bit of Sodium Hypochlorite (bleach) and boil for a full minute. This will kill just about any and all viruses &/or bacteria. Let sit for a bit to cool and air out. Then you have potable water. fog Beer

I mean, I'm comparing that to what I would expect to happen in the US if we told them to do the same.

Can you imagine the population of any city in the US agreeing to stay in their homes for a month and a half?

NIH says death rate is 2.5% with the overwhelming number of deaths being the elderly and already sick people

This is media histrionics. More people will die from the flue this year. This is neither a pandemic, or epidemic. If we just had a new plague people would see the difference, or not.

I was thinking that earlier, Spey...and it still seems like it...given the story seems to lead every news cycle

but there are continuing reports of new cases in countries all over the world...asymptomatic people unknowingly spreading it...the increase in the number of people travelling internationally to China...

and to see whole cities with multi-millions population in China shut down... China rarely tells the truth about internal problems...so that is a sign that they are extremely worried, possibly desperate....

it's beginning to look much more serious than media scare of the day...

I don't think so Al, yes China isn't truthful about this. But the numbers indicate that a small percentage will die. The death toll in 3rd world countries like China are outliers that presently make the death rate percentage higher than it will end up being.

There is no such exclusion in the one of my policies that I skimmed twice.
