Any Suggestions. I have the Palio composite V cutter now. I like it, it works really well, but I see some pictures with a huge notch out of those things. Not sure it that's better or not but what is a day without a new gadget? ThumpUp

So what do you all think?

Colibri V-Cut looks pretty deep and seems somewhat popular. I can't speak from experience though. I like my Cuban Crafters 80RG and Xikar XO.

I normally use a ScrewPop wide diameter punch,
But I’ve been using a Xikar V cutter on occasion lately.
Got it free with a box purchase a while back.
I like it. I cut the cap twice in a criss-cut pattern for a smoother draw.
Caps haven’t come unraveled, but the end’s gotten ratty on a few occasions.

Give ‘er a try ‘ol boy

Gunner, I have:

The Colibri V-cut (black carbon fiber)
The Xikar VX (one in black, one in brown with Diesel logo)
The Xikar VX2 (one in gunmetal, one in red)

I can't speak to the Palio V as I don't have it and I've never used it, but I can tell you about these three.

The Colibri never gets used because it takes just an enormous chunk out of the cigar, so much that often the cap comes undone or other unravelling problems occur, and also it's so deep of a V that you often have to either smoke the cigar in one orientation only or push your lips really far down on the tip or you can't get a lip-seal to draw (haha yeah insert joke here). Overkill, impractical, do not like.

The Xikar VX makes a modest-sized V but it's perfectly serviceable in most cases.

The Xikar VX2 makes a V that's between the VX and the Colibri in size. It's a "Goldilocks" cut IMO, not too small, not too big, just right.

Currently my Colibri sits in a drawer, and I use the Xikar VX for cigars where I think a smaller V will be beneficial (e.g. cigars known to usually have a looser draw) and the VX2 for cigars where I think a deeper (but not ludicrously-big) V will be helpful (e.g. on cigars that usually have a tighter draw).

Also, the VX2 in either gunmetal or red is FREAKING GORGEOUS. The gunmetal is like taking a mirror, darkening it slightly, and perfectly wrapping it around the device, and the red looks like a sports car paint job, honest to god not kidding. GORGEOUS, both! The VX2 is also hefty in the hand, the spring-loaded mechanism with the dual release buttons is really cool to both see and feel, etc. The texturing on the back is really nice too. Awesome piece. The VX is much more basic, but gets the job done.

Both VX and VX2 also double as cigar rests, due to their curved back sides.

Gonna buy only one? VX2 in red or gunmetal. Best all-around V-cutter, and by far the best looking and best feeling one. Trust me.

Look at these images and you'll not be able to resist buying. By the way, these photos aren't the best, they both look BETTER than these photos in person, believe it or not:

Take one out of the box and you'll see the reason for my enthusiasm. I saw these high-res images before ordering these things, and yet STILL, when I opened the box and took them out, it was a "WOW!" moment.

When they first came out, I was visiting a local large mail/internet-order cigar vendor (which I can't name here because it's a competitor) and was chatting with their head of sales and their president, and I mentioned I just got these, and they asked if I had them in the car because they hadn't seen them yet. I ran out to the car and brought them in, and both those guys had a "DAAAAAMNNN!" moment! Good times.

I have and use 3 different V-cutters depending on the RG of the cigar.

Xikar VX - got this back in 2013 and while my favorite cutter for years, was never satisfied with the cut on >50 RG cigars. Would often times do an “X” cut to get enough draw.

Colibri V-cutter - been using one since 2017. Got it ‘cause everything I read about it said it was a really nice deep cut, much deeper than the Xikar. It really does cut D-E-E-P, in fact, sometimes too deep so now I limit using it only on >54 RG.

Xikar VX2 - got one last year and love it! Much deeper than the VX but nothing like the Colibri. I use it on 46 to 52 RG and since the majority of my cigars are 46 to 50 RG, it gets used more often than the other two.

The other V cutter I use is the cheapie that CBid used to sell all the time. Dunno if they still do but at $2 per cutter, it was easy to bid on 10 of them at a time and give away. However, I only have this in my Away bag. I don’t take any of my Xikar cutters or lighters outside of my garage but the cheapie does a pretty decent job.

Hope that helps a little.

Edit: just saw Pudding’s post. We basically said the same thing.

Agree the Colibri V cut does cut deep. This is what I found I liked the best.

Never understood the attraction of a V cut. I prefer a punch or a straight cut if I can't punch it. What is it about a V cut people love so much?

I use punches too, but if those are drawing hard, and the cap looks "short", I v-cut. I V-cut torpedos and perfectos. I think there's less cap issues.

Bigger ring stuff I cut straight. I'll punch lanceros, and lonsdales. Or not. Depends on what I grab sometimes.

I straight cut 99% of the time. I'm boring, or maybe traditional depending on how you look at it

I guess because I don't like anything bigger than a robbie it's never been an issue. adjust slobber the cap and punch away. with torps etc I've just straight cut. Will have to try a V to see if I draw more smoke. If I can find one.

I still stick with the straight cut primarily. Tried 'em all at one point or another, but just like the classic I suppose

Ok. Ok I don’t even use my v cut. But honestly does it make any difference at all?? I’m gonna v cut the next several. I’m honestly curious. If the draw is to your liking. Can the actual shape of the opening make any difference?

Obviously in other scenarios the opening shape certainly matters. But general smoking? Even if it’s a 20$ cigar. Can it actually matter?

When I first started out, I only had a cheapie guillotine and being a newb, often cut too much of the cap. This, of course, led to the cap unraveling almost all the time. Read about the V-cut and thought it might help with my smoking experience. Kept bidding on and eventually won a Xikar V-cutter. The shallowness prevented me from butchering the caps and eventually I learned to cut thin slices with my guillotine. So yah, V is my favorite but I’m really not that picking when it comes to cutting my cigars.
