years later, maybe early 90's, I worked briefly for a sign company and fiber optics was just becoming a thing. A guy named Patrick Lyons owned a lot of the clubs and other stuff around Boston, he was really good at it, can't begrudge him his success. So I heard he was partnering with Aerosmith to reopen either the old Tea Party (15 Lansdowne) or next to it,and it was gonna be called Mamakin which was a nickname Steven Tyler called his baby's momma...I think.

Because I don't know any better, I called Patrick Lyons' office and told the nice lady I wanted to meet him for lunch with a great unique concept for a sign for the new club...I didn't have a sign in mind but I figured I'd blow him away with my little fiber optics display in a suitcase. Had a color wheel that turned in front of some bundled fiber lights to a board that was like Brite Lite.
She goes" Yeah yeah yeah what's your number?"

Minutes later the dude calls me all excited. We met the next day for late breakfast at a table outside a restaurant he (still?) owns on Newbury St...very high end neighborhood. He listens, asks great buyer type questions, says he is very excited about the potential for the technology, and proceeds to draw a microphone on a napkin with the word MAMAKIN along side it vertically...so the sign would be like 6 feet tall and a couple feet wide. It was spectacular...with the color wheel all the letters would constantly change colors and the microphone would constantly appear to be sparkling with color changes too...but he then says that the band already got a proposal that they loved and he was luke warm about, just a neon horizontal sign that said Mamakin...boooring.

He said I had a 33% chance of him getting mine approved (he was one third partner) and asked me to price it ASAP. I did. I lost 2 votes to 1.

my brush wif fame.

and yes, I know it was also a song written by Tyler, but I learned that day it was from his name for his "wife"...or i was tripping.

Van Morrison - Pay The Devil

Back on the Vanfest.

I borrowed this from the library a few years ago but didn’t rip anything. “Your Cheatin’ Heart” and “My Bucket’s Got a Hole in It” were the closest candidates but didn’t make the cut. Tonight confirms my previous non-actions.

70F / 67% / 15 mph - temps hovered around the high 60s / low 70s the whole day, sweatshirt and long socks out in the garage

Broke my string of Van albums to listen to this show via Archive.org. Haven’t been on this site for almost 7 years. Lotta great (...and free...) stuff.

73F / 50% RH / 12 mph - I squandered the chance to wash my car this afternoon, cold and rain predicted for the next couple of days

My first concert I went to without my parents was Black Sabbath opening for WASP. It was the I F*** like a beast tour.... heh. I was 14 and it was awesome! That opened up the flood gates and I slept out for tickets to tons of shows. That used to be as fun as the concert you were getting tickets for! I think the only time people sleep in line to get in somewhere now is for Black Friday so everyone can trample each other all to get $15 off a crappy toaster oven.

Back when good seats cost $20... now it's $200 for obstructed view. I got to see The Stones, Bowie, Motley Crue, Springsteen, U2, Def Leppard etc etc. I was lucky enough to get tickets for the Amnesty International tour with Springsteen, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Tracy Chapman, Joan Biaz and some African singer who's name I cannot remember. That was an amazing night! Wild Turkey made it better! My only regret was skipping a Floyd concert for some chick who's name I don't even remember.

Have you checked out WolFgangs.com? Ton's of live show's from every decade. It's an amazing site.

Cool. ThumpUp

Memories make us rich and you got to see some major artists.

Back-in-the-day, concert tickets used to go for $3.50 (...not a typo...) to $5.50. My sister-in-law had a friend that worked inside the HIC Arena box office where most of the big shows were held, so we would get our prime seat tickets through her...except for the Stones, we hadda sleep over for those. Somewhere in my “Box of Memories”, I have ticket stubs from my favorite shows.

I agree that ticket prices are getting ridiculous but for all the audio and visual improvements most shows now employ, I’m kinda okay paying the $150-$200 prices. What I don’t like are the fees that Stub, Ticketmaster, etc. charge. F’ing ripoff!

Wichita Lineman - Glen Campbell

Disliked Campbell most of my life -- the sappy songs...the silly TV show...the goofy persona. After watching Wrecking Crew, I reexamined my relationship with his music and ...well....I still dislike most of it, but the title song, despite being way out of my comfort zone is pretty damned good...rest of the album mostly ok

Thing I discovered about him and John Denver...they were both extremely gifted guitarists. Border genius with the instrument.

Mahalo for the heads-up.

Twenty years ago I’d be jumping all over this and (...slowly...) replacing my “regular” versions with the remastered ones. However, since there has already been a round of remastered and expanded versions and I did replace some of my older copies, not sure if I’m gonna do another round of replacement. AND Spotify seems to keep upgrading their catalog, so the new remasters will (...hopefully...) eventually show up. Since I listen to music mostly in my car or iPad, probably won’t be getting anything, hard copy-wise.

This brings up a semi-interesting question as to which album I’ve replaced / upgraded over the years. I believe “Layla” is the “winner”:

Layla:
1. Original vinyl
2. Original 2 CD release
3. Single CD
4. Layla sessions
5. Mobile Fidelity
6. 20-bit remaster
7. SACD

“At Fillmore East” a close runner-up:
1. Original vinyl
2. Original 2-CD release
3. Single CD
4. The Fillmore Concerts
5. At Fillmore East Deluxe
6. The 1971 Fillmore East recordings

Anyone else with similar replacement / upgrade experiences?

Nothing quite like that.....

Edgar Winter Group They Only Come Out At Night
1. 45 single Frankenstein
2. 8 track album
3. vinyl album
4. cassette album
5. bits and bytes...mp3 probably; but could be any of a half dozen other different formats....I have used so many different formats ....maddening....many I can't even listen to any more

Chicago VIII & IX; Eagles Greatest Hits; Carole King Tapestry; Bob Marley Legend; Trick of the Tail; American Beauty....numerous others....all in more than a couple formats

8-track AND cassette? Think

But I get it. One for the car and then another one for when the 8-track format died and cassettes ruled the portable listening world.

I had cassette versions of both Layla and Fillmore East but they were strictly for the car.

When the LZ albums were initially released on CD in the 90s, I was lucky enough to know the WEA rep really well. She offered to buy CDs for me at her employee cost so went hog wild and ordered a slew of albums, including LZ 1 thru IV and Physical Graffiti. I could buy brand new CDs at $2.50 to $3.00 per, so bought A LOT of catalog stuff in one stroke. Later bought “How The West Was Won” through her. Eventually she lost her job when the music industry went through major changes in the early-mid 2000s.

Changes like cracking down on unauthorized use f discount?

I've mostly gone cassette to CD, some vinyl to CD largely to have more mobile music. However, I did have an 8 track adapter come with my first car that you just plugged into the cassette player. Never had an 8 track to try it out with though
