When he actually had to fight to win, instead of just overwhelming people with talent and power... he lost all 5 times. (this was on a Joe Rogan interview)
But to say he was just power and had no skills? I disagree, and I watched pretty much all of his fights.
Eh.........not saying he had “no skills”. Just that his boxing skills were actually fairly average.
He was a student of boxing history, etc. was blessed with power, but there were many boxing related bits he lacked, due to simply not learning them (didn’t have to), or physically not being able to execute them.
His jab was mediocre over his career.
He was mediocre at best in tying someone up.
He could not fight defensively, or going backward, at all.
When in trouble, he folded, every time, due to not being able to tie someone up, and more importantly, get out of trouble.
His conditioning on the backend of his career was lacking..........but that’s common in end of the road fighters.
Tyson was one of the greatest in his short era. But I wouldn’t put him in the top 5, or probably even the top 10 greatest heavyweights of all time.
