Same Factory Making Different Brands

In the description of various cigars in Cigarbid it is sometimes mentioned that different competing brand cigars are made in the same factory.

How does this work?

Are they simply the same cigars re-branded?

Do they all use the same tobacco but in different blends?

Does each brand bring their own proprietary tobacco to the factory and the cigars are then assembled using their tobacco but the same workers as the other brands?

Or is it something different, or some combination of the above?

Thanks so much. Herfing

It depends on the quality of Cigar. When you're talking about higher end cigars they use different blends comprised of tobacco from various farms.

When you're talking about cheapo sticks, they could very well all be rebranded dog rockets.

How did you know my first name is Richard?

This is getting scary.

+1

I’m sure many mass production plants are set up to run multiple products / brands all the time. You run one line one day / week then run something else after the order is fulfilled. In a cigar facility I’m sure the rollers are skilled enough to transition from one “recipe” to another, flawlessly. Whether or not the products are all the same but just re-labeled, well...I’m pretty sure that info will never be disclosed. Gonz

No, but it sounds like Fords, Chevys and Chryslers are all being made in the same factory.

And until they built their first factory around a year ago, all Gurkha's were made in other company cigar factories.

making a cigar, with just a few tobacco leaves, is a much simpler process which doesn't require more than a small table top and a place to hold the leaves and a couple of hand tools, takes only a few minutes when expertly done... to make different cigars in the same place, you just have to put in the different leaves for each specific cigar...

compare that to building a car, with several hundred thousand parts, with some very specialized automated processes and some human processes requiring hundreds of different tools, and separate facilities for some of the work (painting)...taking many hours from start to finish...

the automation in car manufacturing is programmed to very tight tolerances for the specific model, and would require extensive re-programming and logistics for parts deployment in the various stages of production in order to make a different model of car...

A cigar factory capable of any sort of quantity is still a capital investment, boutique brands generally cannot fund that sort of investment. But, in any factory where there is a very manual process, there will tend to be quality tiers too, so that if you are contracting you can likely specify the level of care you wish to take (i.e., what level of skill you want rolling). As already mentioned, there are several large brands that also have their own contact factories, as a fully utilized factory is a profitable factory.
