Did the salt slurry thing and will check it tomorrow. Put my cheepie hyro in there too to see how off it is. Moved everything over to the big Sterlite (except all the boxes already loaded in the cabinet humi). It's almost full. Maybe room for 2 more boxes AND.....

I bought 2 more boxes at auction. Yesterday when I was reocating everything into the sterlite My SO came into the mstr closet looked over at all the chit spread out and said WTF?? How many cigars do you have here? In my lifetime I can't smoke all this? Busted. "When did you get all this?" me: spread out over the last few months (hang head)
Then just a shake of the head and walks out of the closet...I think I saw a smirk maybe even happy tilt of the eyes.

Now that I'm outed, I looked at the auctions and got a box of LG #9 short panetela and La Mission L'Atelier 2003 that seemed like a deal. both under 5 per stick including taxes and shipping.
but I'm stopping now. god help me.

my previous post above
had my hand slapped and learned my lesson posting in the "wrong" spot

to update:
This morning my readings on the cheapie was 71% and new hygro 72%
Checked 3 hours later and the cheapie was 73% Caliber 69% huuh?
Caliber show the max and min values when I press.
I may have overmoistened the salt but why did it go from 72 to 69?
I'll check back in another couple hours. Supposed to be 75, right?

No, moistened salt should be 70% humidity.

Nope . . . It's 75%.
Here's a good video that shows a proper "salt test".

Do yourself a favor and look up 65% rh beads

And never worry about all this nonsense again.

Been using these for almost 20 years now...never a concern or over/under humidifier cigar

1pound is plenty enough for a large sterility tub

Hence my confusion I guess with the salt number. LOL

Sorry.

I run the heartfelt beads, never looked back.

.
Superabsorbent polymer balls/chunks, initial charge with 50/50, after that with distilled water and occasional 50/50. Used in combination with 69% Boveda packs for 2-way trim, and the Bovedas self-recharge from the polymer and rarely have to be touched.

Works great, has for many years for me, and is cheap.

I may try the silica beads if I can ever find Heartfelt's underlying cheap supplier and thereby cut Heartfelt out and thus pay a tiny fraction of the highly-marked-up prices they charge.

Humi-Care superabsorbent polymer, $10 for 4oz jar at CI. Can easily find dirt-cheap bulk underlying suppliers on Amazon, can cut CI out, save big money.

Heartfelt? Haven't found their dirt-cheap bulk underlying supplier yet, but maybe someday!

Then again, the superabsorbent polymer + Boveda setup works perfectly, so I probably wouldn't bother.

Update

This morning the new Caliber IV says 75%
Cheepie 73%
Just put my analog in there to see how off it is. Eventually plan to get more Calibers

I marked -2 on the cheepie to remind me it runs 2 under actual humidity. This means my main stash has been 2 over for a long time.

I have maybe 1/4 pound of unused Heartfelt beads from a few years ago, some already in little stocking balls. Can't remember how I got them. What's the best way to use them? I'm putting the calber in my new Sterlite setup to see where I'm at. Also dry boxing a cannister of DC Maximas that were over humidified. Need to get everything stabilize so I can close it all up and just monitor.

Appreciate all the help here, wise ones.

I just dumped mine in a sandwich sizes Tupperware container inside a nylon. Then when time to hydrate just most with distilled water and shake until they are mostly clear.

One of these easily handles around 5 cu ft

Since it was a used box I started thinking maybe the seal was too loose. I put 2 heavy items on both long edges ( without handle closure) and humidity was at 69%. this morning. Onto my next compulsion.....thx for everyones help

Benja, good thinking! Putting weight on top of the Sterilites definitely helps.

They're stackable (lid of one locks into bottom of the one above it). So what you can do, once you get several of them, is stack them and then only the top one might need some heavy objects placed on its lid. All the others will have the weight of other containers pressing down on their lids.

That's what I do. Stack of 'em with a heavy thing or two on the lid of the top one. Works great.

Stacking is great! Each 4-high stack of the big Sterilites gives you 464 quarts of storage space in the floor "footprint" of just one container (about 3x2 feet). Very very nice!

If your sickness (CAD, Cigar Acquisition Disorder) gets advanced enough, you can end up with quite a number of those 4-high stacks, but CAD is a topic for another thread entirely. Herfing

You're right! It's a sign of weakness. I heard if you bid over retail you get platinum status.

I'd rather have them at 65% than 69% but I guess it's a personal thing and depends on where you live.

live in humid south texas but a/c is on at 74 all spring and summer keeping the house humidity low.
currently not smoking for health reasons. vacation planned mid august in Jamaica but who know if that will happen.
wherever we end up will be smoking then but not before.

from advice given here I'll keep everything between 65% & 69%.
my cheepie hygro was off by 2 point so after dry boxing I have the DC Maximus Toros in a canister with a 69% Boveda and a bit of cedar and they are stabilized too.

Barry Goldwater would have stopped me from buying that box of LG9 short panatelas and the 10pack of MF La Antigua coronas but instead I had to rearranged the tuppidor for when they show up. It's officially full. I hope that stops me .
