Don’t let out that you’re desperate or you’re in big trouble. Good luck in finding the right one.

Oh and is this the new 500?

I'd love to have a diesel but I'm not sold on it fitting my usage. It would be excellent for tow duty no doubt. But it's also my daily driver and I have a short commute, plus I live where it can get deep into the negative degree temp range and I park it overnight at work with no outlets to plug in a block heater. Plus the price premium keeps em outta my reach unless looking at 100k mile+ trucks. I know several people well over a half million miles but their usage is a lot more consistently heavy towing than mine. Half my miles are unloaded 10 mile commute each way. If I had a 40 mile commute and the truck could get up to proper operating temp every time, I'd shop em more seriously.

I've shopped em. My dad just bought a brand new one and I'll be borrowing it if I tow to CO this year. But I think I need to stick to gas for my own vehicle.

That's a smart choice and assessment for your needs. Most just go buy what they want and do not assess needs

Get a used Turbo Diesel super duty with 100k miles on it, and you will be happier overall than a HD Chevy.

Yes and yes.

I'm not desperate yet. Even if I'm getting close to the "deadline" I can borrow or rent a truck for the two night trip. Mine won't make it. Even unloaded today it was struggling on the highway. My rebuilt trans is 2 months outta warranty and not locking up or shifting properly on the highway. Probably what led to the engine overheating on our camping trip - letting it slip in 5th rather than locking up in 4th got it too hot, trans cooler in front of radiator, cook the engine. Trans shouldn't be going to 220 unloaded at 65mph.

I'm trying to approach this as objectively as possible. The only truck so far that I've fallen in love with before seeing it is the failed attempt first thing this morning. The sales guy called me twice more today trying to get me to come out there and look at their other trucks but I told him I have time to find another. I did tell him what I wanted and said you can email me if you get a 3/4 ton, crew cab, gas engine, 6ft bed, 4wd, light body color, dark interior color, newer than 5 years, and under 60k miles but otherwise I'm not shopping.

I'm not a fan of the interiors in the lower trim levels on the Fords.

I think Ram gives the best interior for the price at the lower ends, then Chevy, then Ford. (talking used 3-6 years out but I think the new Rams still carry that torch)

I have no brand loyalty though. If something in my price range meets my needs/wants I'm shopping.

Still don't think I want a diesel. I would like a diesel, but for my needs and use it's less than ideal. If I commuted with wife's car and only used the truck for long trips and towing, then yes. And back to if something in my price range meets my needs/wants I'm shopping - if it's a diesel, I'll look at it. I'm not ruling them out, but not seeking them out either.

Lolz

But back to your original point, I don't know that I want another 6.0 right now. It did its job, but once I had the truck well loaded it was struggling. The newer gassers have another 100hp and 100lb ft on the 6.0 in my truck which is why I've been leaning more towards the Ram offerings. But even the most recent iteration of the 6.0 has a significant bump in output compared to mine, so if that's what meets my needs first I'll consider it. Ram 6.4, then Ford 6.2, then Ram 5.7, then Chevy 6.0. The new GM 6.6 gas seems like a good setup too, but I'm not shopping new. If I was, the Ford 7.2 would be highest on the list.

In the small mountains of TN/GA I'd be sitting 4krpm+ to maintain 50mph. To be fair, my buddies with older diesels fully loaded also were struggling, but more because EGTs were getting too high than a power shortage. The under warranty dudes blew by at 80mph not giving no fuxks. One buddy tows a 13klb 5th wheel all over the country with his F350's but he buys a new truck and camper every 3-4 years and just stomps on em. I was pedal down at Monteagle TN northbound with 8k on the hitch doing 55ish and heard a horn blasting, saw a truck coming and then passing me like I was standing still. He said he was doing a little over 80 up that hill.

I appreciate diesels, but I don't see it being a great match for my use. I'd be facing higher maintenance costs and increased DEF usage given my short commute.

Sure would like one tho. Just can't objectively justify it.

I drive nothing but Toyota's,Tacoma(4X4 4-door) for me Highlander for wifey. Not sure a Tacoma meets all your needs but if you ever own one you may own nothing else the rest of your life.I do love getting 250-300K trouble free miles out of a gas truck before replacement time.I have about 105K on my current Tacoma........lots of life left.

If I didn't tow, I'd definitely shop a Taco. Mother in law said she wanted a Gladiator, cause she wants a small pickup. I told her to look at the Tacoma, though a Ridgeline would be best for her use - hauling plants and flowers from the greenhouse back to her yard.

I loved my 5 speed Dakota. I love midsize trucks for average daily use. I towed a lot with the Dakota too, but anything over 4k and I had to shift near redline and couldn't maintain 55+ without revving the crap outta that v6. I also carried 2200lbs of concrete bags in the bed once, the front tires came off the ground going over the tracks by my house and the hitch receiver hit the ground several times. Bought a few yards of dirt, one yard at a time in the bed and same result.

It was a great little truck and I shopped Tacomas to replace it but my towing needs were increasing at the time and there was no way I could get away with a midsize again. I open trailered my race car to several events over the years I had the Dakota and I had no complaints. But once I put that same car and trailer onto my 3/4 ton pickup, there was no turning back. Prior to that I'd only known towing with an 82 Olds Delta, a 92 Suburban, a 96 V6 shortbed standard cab v6 chevy half ton, and the Dakota. The Dodge was the best of those, but I think that was more due to the 3.90 rear end and 5 speed than anything else.

I'd shop half tons too if it wasn't for my side/hobby job. I need to be able to tow heavy for long distance. A half ton would work fine for my camper, and even the race/event trailers would be doable with most well equipped half tons. But on a 2-3k mile round trip, I want the stability of the 3/4 ton chassis. I've had brake failures more times than I haven't had em, and having a heavy truck with giant brakes has been a lifesaver. A half ton would honestly fit my usage on paper better than a HD truck, but in the used market 3/4 and half tons are pretty similarly priced for similar equipment levels but you get tow mirrors, better payload, a more stable chassis, bigger brakes, and better cooling systems in the 3/4 ton gassers at the expense of everyday comfort and fuel economy.

Try towing with that Tacoma... I know, because I had 1 for 4 years. Nice trucks, and they have their cult following, but they suck at towing. Now off-road, they excel.

Edit: prolly should have read Danm's reply first... haha

Find a well maintained Chevy LMM 07-2011, I have and 08 with 329k on it. It’s the most trouble free diesel pickup I’ve ever owned. An I’ve had quite a few.

Little monsters put up a good fight going to bed tonight. Finally got them down and got some backyard cigar time. Temps are still nice, but supposed to hit 110+ in the next few days. I may have to rethink smoking outside when night time lows are in the 90s...

It was very hot heere yesterday as well. Today, Sunday, is supposed to get to 94F with "feels like" over 100 when hummidity is supposedly factored. Thankfully, the summer season is not quite here yet and we enjoyed a breeze.

Still have my 2011 F-250.

I pull a 30' 3 horse slant horse trailer with living quarters. Off the line I'm not lighting them up but once I'm on the highway I don't even know that rig is behind me. With or without the Clydesdale we used to have.

I've owned a truck almost my entire life and every time I didn't have one I needed one. I can't imagine not having one. That said, I don't believe I'd buy new again unless it's some amazing deal between Christmas and New Years Eve like when we bought this one. I effectively bought a new truck at used price. Locally there's an amazing place that always has stock and I've known a LOT of people that have dealt with them and they KNOW trucks. I don't know of anyone that's dealt with them that's been ripped off or sold a lemon. They all say when I'm ready go there first and you'll go back and buy your truck. Maybe there's a place like this locally for you...

I need a new truck too, but I don't tow anything. My 1998 Dodge 150 is still running but I'm reluctant to go very far from home with it. I was thinking the last time I used it that if the A/C went maybe then it would be time for something new or newer.

Morning all, doing something incedable today. A halo jump in about 1 hour. Conditions look like 28K feet. I have wanted to do this for a long time. After that scuba diving with sharks. Finishing with a very high speed cigar boat. We are already pumped about the day.

Good Morning folks. Wife made bread last nite (challa) yesterday and is waiting to make me french toast for breakfast. Last night we had homemade crab cakes and a super thick gram cracker crust key-lime pie (Joe's Stone Crab recipe) with freshly grated key-lime zest. For lunch yesterday we had take out chinese and I never even got around around eating mine (kung pao shrimp) so it's certainly on today's agenda. Friday we took out Turkish food. Shish-kabob chicken, lamb and steak, pita (lavash) and the best chumas we have ever had. Oh, I forgot to mention the 8oz. lobster tail in the refrigerator- lunch? Daughter came in to town Friday and it has been all about the food again for the Fenster house.

will be picking up my mother at the nearby assisted/memory care place not far from us and heading to our daughter and sil new home not too far in Chestnut Hill where we will have 4 generations
spaced carefully in the back yard and/or mud room porch area (gonna be in the 80's and 90's). Other daughter and her boyfriend will be there too. That's the whole clan.

Menu will be decadent I'm sure.

Bittersweet, but will focus on all the good in my life.

The sack will be smaller than you want, not the correct color, will have the wrong trim level, too much wear on the left side, and will be three years older than you want with too much mileage. Probably not worth it...
