I want recipes.
Please.

I'm generally a beer and wine guy.
I like some booze and make some good drinks.

But I have a weakness for a good old fashioned.
Really good.

I've had two. Well, one really. Rooftop bar in Anaheim. Across from the Disney park. We go to an annual event hosted by a vendor while at a trade show. It's open bar, and it takes about 5 minutes for the barkeep to make the old fashioned. but totally worth it.

Yesterday I was paying my lunch tab and the waitress mentioned their old fashioned. They premake and barrel age. Needs the special big ice cube and bitters and whatnot. But I got a taste of the booze mix.

Now I'm on a mission.

The PERFECT old fashioned.

Thank you.

I used to play a lot with mixed drinks and perfection is not always easy to find. Little changes and additions can be made for your particular taste. Unfortunately Old Fashioneds was one I never really cared for, so I have no suggestions for you.

I saw old fashioned and thought he was referring to everyone who posts here..... I was gonna nominate Jespear. He's a happy fellow, a grandpa and he wears dark socks with sandals with high waisted shorts. He also voted for FDR 5 times. fog

Sounds perfect to me;-p

Can't help with a recipe but if you're ever in Madison WI make sure you hit the Old Fashioned restaurant bar across from the capital. (take some time to tour the capital building too)

1 sugar cube
2-3 dashes Angostura bitter(I like 3)
2-3 ounces rye or bourbon(again I like 3)
Orange peel(I use a potato peeler and stay out of the pith)

PREPARATION
Muddle the sugar cube and bitters with one teaspoon of water at the bottom of a chilled rocks glass. Add rye or bourbon then stir.Add one large ice cube or sphere(the sphere is my go to) and stir until chilled, about 30 seconds.Run the orange peel around the rim of the glass and drop into the cocktail.

Easy peasy and delicious

My bourbon choice in an OF is always a high proof and high rye bourbon,my favorite for this cocktail is Old Granddad 114.

My choice of rye is Old Forester 100 proof but you could use any rye, again I'd recommend a 100 proof or higher.

Pour speyside whiskey into a scotch glass... add a drop of water or a bit of ice.

Enjoy.

That's my favorite drink recipe.

^ I forgot to mention the potato peeler in my recipe.
Very important!
Having one now.
I also concur on the high rye, high proof preference.
Hold the sugar for me though, but I'm a black coffee guy though so, to each his own.

Pretty much agree with Shawn except I substitute bourbon or rye for the Scotch. Herfing

I take my coffee black as well.I'm somewhat of a purist however the sugar is the reason I like 3 drops of bitters and 3 oz whisky, too sweet is too sweet fo damn sure. However my favorite cocktail of all time is bourbon and glass........now this is a true classic

That's me too...'cept no water. I fill a glass half full with crushed or chipped ice. Pour in the scotch till it all floats. I most likely won't take a first sip until it's melted a bit.

Rinse later repeat.

You can also use simple syrup instead of a sugar cube. Same thing. Rye whiskey is best.

I prefer mine without the orange peel. Don't care for citrus.

And sans orange peel.

I don't care for simple syrup in an OF........there's just something about the sugar cube muddled with the bitters and a tiny bit of water.

I will be using a sugar cube.
Orange peel (although I like the option of tangerine)
3 dashes angostura bitters. But I might purchase orange bitters and try that too.
I'll be buying premium cherries. Makes a big difference.

So: Bourbon or rye?
I'll start with a good bourbon as a baseline.

What's up with the dole sweet orange thingy? Never heard that being used, and it's no wonder you omit the sugar.

I'll update when I try it.

In the meantime, been making my own Long Drink.
Grapefruit soda with gin.
Fuggin awesome in this heat.
And I get to try all different gins. Had one today made with my Hop Gin.
Yesterday I used local Bully Boy gin.
Might even try Barr Hill Tom Cat.

Oh, and a swizzle stick.

Rye.
It helps to balance the sweetness of the sugar.

A hot weather favorite of mine used to be an Apricot Cooler. Simple recipe - fill a tall glass with crushed ice, fill with Apricot brandy and perhaps a bit of sugar. Drink !

I always use simple syrup over the cube. Agree on a rye that is bonded.

what good bourbon?
some bourbons are spicy from rye, some are wheated and much softer.
I'll drink either or any if you make one (two) for me

Bourbon Whiskey is for old fashions, rye should be used for a Manhattan. Tailgater has it right. Sugar cube and orange bitters and angostura. A luxardo cherry is a good one to use as a garnish.

High rye bourbon such as Redemption High Rye. I'm not a rye fan but high rye bourbon I like all by itself. Never liked Manhattans but love old-fashions
I'm told some high rye bourbons are made with more corn than regular bourbons. I guess corn to rye ratios aren't highly regulated?
Unless bottled in bond of course but even then I think that just verifies age, proof and single batch?
Drinking a virgin slurpy right now so what do I know

Joe buy a bottle of Peychaud’s bitters. It’s a mint/anise base bitter. Make some simple syrup and forget about the sugar cube. Twist and orange peel over the glass then rub the rim with it before you add any of the ingredients. Use a high rye bourbon. Use 2-3 crystal clear ice cubes. Gently stir. Do not shake because you don’t want to water it down.

All this talk of Old-Fashions reminded me of the couple of dozen I had in Durango so I had to have a few at home.

Using Bulleit 95 Rye
Tablespoon of Simple Syrup
Slightly muddled cherry
3 dashes angostura bitters
Shaken served on the rocks.

Shaken?

I just bought some Bulleit Rye and another bottle of Woodford Reserve so I can do a comparison.
Got the good cherries and almost shat a brick when they range up $19.99. (but worth it).
Had to buy sugar cubes.
I also picked up some orange bitters to complement and compare to the angostura.

Now all I need is a big ice cube.

Used 1 tsp Of liquid from cherry jar
Orange peel(used potato Peeler)
