I’m gonna drink every time I hear the evening news mention Mitch McConnell tonight......freaking NYT announcement was very classless.

I was not a huge RBG fan but she does deserve respect, I’m not a fan of using dead people for props in place of celebrating or even recognizing them.

She was a powerful voice for progressive thought. No supreme court justice should EVER be a voice in the political arena. She was. RIP

Like; Obama at Lewis funeral, wasn't using dead people for props!

Real shift in election. Does Joe B. Remember who she was? Let's use it in the campaign as a fear tactic, no respect for the Dead.

I did not care for "The Notorious R.B.G." nor her political activism while sitting on the high court but she does deserve proper respect.

May she rest in peace and her family find comfort.

Me too.

I read an article about her this week and found my self contemplating who her successor
might be under different scenarios, knowing how frail and ill she was

So you're OK with the courts of the American justice system being politicized?

Are you replying to my post immediately above?

Because if you are, then I never said that.

As a matter of fact, no I am not OK of that. But, I am a realist in such matters and know that's just the way things are. Elections have consequences.

So you're not OK with it being political but agree with Frank that you wished she retired so your guy had a chance to make the appointment.

She didn't like the U.S. Constitution because it was a “a rather old constitution.”
She preferred the Constitution of South Africa or the European Convention on Human Rights because they were “much more recent than the U.S. Constitution.” They are much more authoritarian and sympathetic to plundering collectivist progressive policies like their quixotic war against climate change, expansion of the welfare-state including the invention of every human right that Democratic Socialists can imagine.

I can hear it now...Comrade Joe Biden calling her a true American.

she gave voice and inclusive application to the American ideal, written on the wall of the SCOTUS Building: "Equal Justice Under the Law" ...

she fought for the rights of average Americans who were historically discriminated against and who did not enjoy the same equal justice under the law that the ruling class enjoyed...

the cross section of Americans who felt an attachment to her and gathered up last night at the SCOTUS Hall to pay their respects, looked like what the future of America will be, due in no small measure to her efforts...

RIP, RBG

The socialists are getting ready for another round of rioting, burning and looting when Trump nominates her replacement.
That's what they'll call fighting for democracy's survival.

I did say that. But I first said it (probably not here) 5 years ago, maybe even longer, having no idea who would be the next POTUS.
She was very old, and had suffered from a myriad of illnesses. It was time for her to retire back then.
It wasn't something that just occurred to me

Obama was president for 8 years (2009-2017) so you did know who the POTUS was and was hoping for it to happen when he was in the driver's seat.

It's OK if you want it to be a political appointment. I'd rather that judges not be but since they are appointed by a politician and politicians these days appear to be incapable of being impartial we can only hope that the approval process can help balance that.

Pretty much what I am agreeing to having said.
Was just pointing out that in my non-virtual life I had hoped she retired several years ago. Not suddenly now before the body is cold.

If they go to recess Mr.T can just go with appointment. It's in the rules.

Many thought that was going to happen. Myself included. If those were her wishes and that's what she really wanted she should've retired. Especially when she was ill in health to begin with.

yes.

agree or disagree with her views, she lived an extraordinary life and in many ways was a pioneer.
She was able to separate politics from what really defines friendship and she and Scalia should be models for a better political world based on listening, cooperation and respect...though I fear they will not be thought of again.

Anyone see the two-hour special about RBG's life on CNN? It's really good, no matter what party you belong to.

yes...very well done...I wonder how many of those snippets were already in the can...they couldn't have done such a comprehensive program in such short notice...

I remember listening to a program about RBG on NPR while on a drive in Kauai a couple of years ago...so fascinating I kept driving, past my destination in Poipu, to the end of the road at Barking Sands, so I could hear the entire show...

she breathed life into the 14th Amendment, showing how it applied to every person in America, but most especially to women...
