San Francisco Bans Tobacco Smoking in Apartments!

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — City officials in San Francisco have banned all tobacco smoking inside apartments, citing concerns about secondhand smoke. But lighting up a joint inside? That’s still allowed.

The Board of Supervisors voted 10-1 Tuesday to approve the ordinance making San Francisco the largest city in the country to ban tobacco smoking inside apartments, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The original proposal sought to ban residents from smoking marijuana in their apartments, but supervisors voted to exclude marijuana after cannabis activists said the law would take away their only legal place to smoke. It’s illegal under state law to smoke cannabis in public places.

“Unlike tobacco smokers who could still leave their apartments to step out to the curb or smoke in other permitted outdoor smoking areas, cannabis users would have no such legal alternatives,” said Supervisor Rafael Mandelman, who wrote the amendment to exempt cannabis.

San Francisco now joins 63 California cities and counties with such a ban.

Those against the ban argued that it infringed on their rights inside their homes. Supporters said it’s important to protect the health of nonsmokers — particularly low-income residents who live in dense apartment buildings.
Cigarette smoking kills more than 480,000 people per year in the United States, including more than 41,000 deaths caused by exposure to secondhand smoke, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

480,000 deaths? We must lock ourselves in our houses in order to fight Cigarette-19. It's the only way.

Literally - not figuratively - literally the dumbest comparison I've ever seen...

Well no, some drugs good some drugs bad...

In this particular instance the bad drug would be cigarettes, something we know to be highly addictive and deadly... and the not bad drug would be cannabis which kills zero people a year...

The op might as well have complained that you can't smoke cigarettes in an apartment but you can still drink coffee...

If you're in Oregon already, you can go to a different state without leaving your apartment.

The reason this is being passed is to stop secondhand tobacco smoke from getting into neighboring apartments. Why it is not also trying to stop secondhand marijuana smoke from from getting into neighboring apartments is a perfectly valid question.

Unless we think secondhand marijuana smoke is good for our children.

Well Opie, we actually have a few murders per year with the margiwhana and hemp.....amazingly it doesn’t always attract the best people and we have robberies, theft and murder. Almost always people who worked at the pharms.

Thankfully we have legalized all drugs now except cigars, so I’m sure that will fix everything. And they’re looking at more gun control because the existing laws that get broken aren’t “law-y” enough.....

Kate hasn’t murdered all businesses this year only the small ones and they don’t vote left enough or donate to the cause.

You want those little attention deficient apartment dwelling bastards running around in the streets chasing frisbees in front of your car? Of course it's good for them...

In California, it's illegal to smoke marijuana outdoors... it's also illegal to smoke marijuana indoors if you're in view of the public... it's also illegal to allow the smell of marijuana to escape from your dwelling... tobacco still has the upper hand...

In terms of it being a valid question, it isn't... pot smoke and tobacco smoke aren't similar... pot smokers and tobacco smokers aren't similar...

Is marijuana a constitutional right in California like Florida? That may explain the inconsistency between cigarettes' and pot.

Just a ballot proposition that legalized it. Nothing in the constitution.

Wait for SF to have a mandatory stay indoors order, then burn all the apartments down.

Any escapees get arrested for violating the order.

Seems like it would clean up the mess rather efficiently.

I don't think smoking pot is as bad for you as cigarettes... you don't smoke as many, obviously, and it doesn't have nicotine in it... but it is DAMN sure not good for your lungs. Anyone who says otherwise is a liar, or delusional.

If they are worried about 2nd hand smoke, tell them to wear a mask. It keeps the virus out and viruses orders of magnitude smaller than smoke.

California has medical AND recreational on the books. Florida only has medical and they're slow walking that as we speak online.
