What highly rated cigars do you think suck (and therefore I should avoid)?

Mine:
AB Prensado (96 rated) - Sucked
RP Decade (95 rated) - Sucked
Oliva Serie V Melanio (96 rated) - Sucked (I love the regular Vs)

I agree that AB and RP can be hit or miss but I disagree with the Serie V. I've gone through about 2 boxes and every single one has been excellent. One of the most consistent cigars that I've had by far.

EP Carillo Elencos (94 rated)...supposedly the same blend as the original that got the 94 back in 2010...the original Elenco Elites were outstanding...the latest iteration released a couple years ago are not the same...sucked

EP Carillo Encore (96 rated)...sucked

EP Carillo La Historia (95 rated)...sucked

see a pattern?

yah... agree with SOB that the Oliva Melanio is a good smoke...most Oliva's are good cigars, but I think that is the flagship...

The melanio is one of my favorites. Haven’t found many olives I dislike. I could go through any of my magazines and hate all over a ton of the highly rated sticks in the book.

See, I would have said the Oliva Serie V Belicoso (95 rated). Number 3 cigar of the year in 2017!

Tastes like someone p!ssed on an oak log, stuffed it up a hogs @ss, burned the whole thing, then scraped up the charred pieces and rolled them in a tobacco leaf. Or at least that's the closest thing I have to compare it to. Anxious

Oh, I forgot... CAO Flathead (95 rated). I have a buddy who keeps trying to convince me they are great, but I have tried the V554 and V660 (and the Steelhorse, technically a different cigar altogether) and the Flathead is totally one-note for me. And that note is poop.

I liked regular Flathead (think it was the Camshaft?), not to disagree with you at every turn, but the Steel Horse sucked bad IMO

I bought 3 fivers of those caos in different sizes. I dont remember which ones. Some were good some were not, within the same size line. Wouldn't rate any of them as high end, just a decent daily cigar.

The melanio is decent, and consistent. I wouldn't call it the cream of the crop but I've never had one I tossed early.

How any Rocky cigar makes the list is beyond me. Might as well put some pre cut Victor Sinclairs on the list too.

I may have confused the situation. What I meant to say was that I thought both the Flathead AND the Steelhorse sucked.

Good thing CAO didn't screw up the Brazilia...

Also, AR Quattro Nicaragua (96 rated). I mean, they are OK, but not COTY good.

A 93 rated Padron XXXX (among many others) is much better than the AR IMO.

I like the Quattro pretty well. I know I’m the minority but I don’t love the padron 1000 series. Never tried the expensive ones they offer. I will someday.

With that though I think there’s some tatuaje cigars that are way underrated.

I smoke cao Brazil though. And I like em once in a while. I bought more recently

The Melanio is great in the smaller vitolas with a bit of rest.
I ONCE got a bad batch of Le Bijou Petite robs........really bummed me out to the point I was convinced someone did a “band swap” at the online retailer, they were that bad.

If you try a highly rated cigar bought from here and say it "sucks" maybe try one from a b&m and see if it is the same. You have to wonder how is it possible to buy premium cigars for less than what local shops pay wholesale even after tax and shipping is included. Something doesn't add up with this site and if you dont see it you are either not being honest with yourself or dont care what you smoke as long as it's wearing your favorite band. I figured out whats going on after my first and last order. Try taking apart one of your premium long filler cigars bought here and you might find mixed short filler and floor sweepings like I did.

Yup j&k11 right there with you. Took apart a CAO Gold from a 15 pack only to find that it was mixed filler, consisting of little tiny bits of tobacco, ( some almost Cavendish looking, black stuff)
Not saying I wont find another place to buy my cigars, however I'll be keeping an eye on the multi-packs, and theyll be hearing from me if something is awry. I'm not here to self toot, but I spend ALOT on this site, and it's time to keep these peeps honest! This year has been particularly bad. ( what I failed to mention is that I take apart QUITE a few stogies to check them) and the golds were only 1 of them. Let me hear from y'all bout this, I'd love to find out if more of you have had the same experience, thanks herfers, I've been shopping here since 2007 and this is the 1st time I've ever written on the forum, so, be gentle lol🐈

Well you might be right.........but I don’t think so.
Here is my take.
Padron, LFD, higher end Tats, Fuente, Dunbarton, higher end My Father, and so on?
I seriously doubt they have shpo cigars, and then a second tier cigar of the same brand/vitola that is special made, from lesser tobacco, for online retailers.

Rocky, AB, Gurkha and the like?
Who knows. Smoke at your own risk.

Where things get “tricky” is when a mid range high volume producer, like AJ for instance, licenses out certain lines to CI and the like. Then you can have issues with respect to a particular cigar not being what it once was.

I won't say they suck, they don't.

But as I puff on this probably my 4th or 5th iteration I can't help but think of many others I'd enjoy more for less$

I'll let the rest nap a while before revisiting but seeing it's already medium bodied... Whatever

When someone says this I suggest they go back through their comic book collection and see how much advertising they find of those craptastic cigars in the previous editions leading up to the annual review. If won does so you can predict all of the winners.

On the chatter of crap stogies, tried 2 southern draw firethorns, and they were absolutely FLAT, no flavor at ALL. And heres the thing, my 1st, I had the day after they came in the mail ( devoid of even the slightest nuance, of even tobacco flavor) My 2nd one was kept in one of my 9 cedar humidors for 2 MONTHS before I toasted up that useless thing ( for lack of even a more pitiful moniker) and once again, ZERO, NADA, GOOSE EGG. I guess this , once again only serves to prove, that the only difference between a 12$ cigar and a 4$ cigar IS THE PRICE!

Way back when I started out (early 2000's ish) a lot of folks were posting on how they loved the AVO stuff. Big ratings, lots of talk about AVO cigars. Being curious and never had any, I asked for recommendations. My memory ain't what it used to be but pretty sure it was Thunder Gerbil who sent me a sampler pack of about 10 or so to try. 5 different ones, 2x of each of his picks - one to try now (then) and one to revisit later.

They didn't fit what I like even after a second try from what he sent me. Not saying the sucked, just weren't my cup of tea. I haven't bought AVO since.

Tip my cap to TG for sending the sampler pack some 20 yrs ago. Sometimes knowing what you don't like is as good as knowing what you do.

+1...not for lack of trying either!

Went to one of their events and could only smoke 1/3 of the cigar they gave me...a 20 dollar cigar too!

The AB Prensado with it's 96 rating really socks. There had to be money passing under the table to get that rating. It's more like a 69 rating.

"mixed short filler and floor sweepings"!LOL LOL LOL You buy "Knock-Offs", "2nds, or "Overruns" and are surprised to find crap??????? Or some other cheapo. No front line blend sold here, except for some generic Gurkha blends, are anything different or less than what is advertised. Been buying here since 2009 and they always compare to my local shop which I also buy from monthly, especially the AJ Fernandez, Rocky Patel, Alec Bradley, Montecristo, Camacho, and Oliva brands, which is what I win most for around three bucks a stick. Don't be jealous or angry you chose suspect brands that use, LOL, DIRT as filler, and can't win ay decent blends for cheap! You haven't "figured" out anything except how to pay MORE for hardly average smokes somewhere else!d'oh! d'oh! d'oh! LOL LOL LOL

Never paid too much attention to CA’s COTY list (…or just about anyone else’s…), mostly ‘cause by the time the list(s) came out, most, if not all of the cigars rolled from that particular tobacco crop year would be sold out. Sure, you might get lucky and stumble upon some but odds are, you won’t. Using ratings 3-4 years later would be ludicrous.

Hate to think that the amount of advertising plays a part in the ratings…. d'oh!

I gotta get my "to try" list somewhere...

With some exceptions the better cigars come from brands that actually grow their own tobacco.

Adding to my post, for sure there are some manufacturers that put out consistent product year after year. Fuente and Padron come quickly to my mind.

As far as your newsletter subscription, you probably have to upgrade your membership status. Gonz

Padron’s are well constructed. But, for me unless they have at least 5 years of rest I find them to be underwhelming as far as taste is concerned. On the other hand, the anniversary series are well aged out of the box and I find them to be excellent.

Smoked one last night. It was one of the many great cigars sent by Benja last year. But gotta agree, the cigar was good but THE COTY? Hmm, does that mean the other cigars CA smoked that year weren’t as good? Think

To be fair, the first release of the AB Prensado we’re good

The first release of the RP Decade was awesome.

Olivia V Melanio IMO is very good for what it is, a strong Nicaraguan muted profile *shrug*

Now the newer AB Prensado has terrible QC and consistency issues, RP has sucked more in the last 10 years than drunk Victor at a truck stop.

Davidoff Nicaraguan is the diadma vitola is awesome FWIW.

For the bang for the buck worst cigar ever? I’m gonna fire up the way back machine and say the Puros Indios Cienfuegos for the win. My local at the time offered these at $30/ea, so I felt like a thief when I won two singles on this here CBid for $10/ea. Ouch……love and learn. Puros Indios Pirates Gold was a better cigar and that’s saying something.
