The city of Manhattan Beach, a fairly wealthy beach city among several along the shore of the Santa Monica Bay which define the beach lifestyle of greater Los Angeles, decided to give back a prime piece of real estate to a black family. Seems that in 1924, the city seized the beachfront property through eminent domain from a black family, who had built a successful resort that attracted a great business from the black community throughout the LA area. The city, populated by nearly all whites at the time, used the pretext of needing a park in the area as a rationale for taking the property. The park was eventually built more than 40 years after the land was confiscated and the blacks evicted.

Earlier this week, the city and the state gave the property back to the descendants of the original owners. The population of the city today is about 80% white, 13% asian, 5.5% mixed and less than 1% black. None of the new owners were alive when the property was seized from their ancestors.

So... in 1924 they used Eminent domain... and PAID the people for their land... and 100 years later give it back? For free?

Sounds to me like the taxpayers get f---ed twice and the family gets paid for their land and then gets to keep it. Where do I sign up for that kind of justice?

That's just my perspective. YMMV

So the city totally admits it used its eminent domain power as a pre-text to seize a black family's highly valuable ocean resort property because they were black?

Was the family paid anything for the land at that time?

Just read the full article.

Most interesting was that the state legislature "unanimously" voted for return of the land. That included, I believe, 28 Republicans who voted for it too.

Just from the waist down.

I think this is great. I think every wealthy white person that owns beachfront property in California should have to give it to a black person immediately.

Then I think they should have to defend it against my animal sprit brothers, the Rooftop Koreans.

Come on. You’re a lefty. You known darn well that the government was more entitled to that wealth than your family was.

I just don't like eminent domain being used as a pre-text for a racist-based, land grab. That does make me wonder.

And here we are just wishing they would pay what they agreed to...

We're not really naive enough to think they'll give us back OUR land...

This is just a token to show how good they've become to hide that if they did that with us... the whole system would be over!

Yes government... give us back our land... strip all the owners of their land and trade them to Canada for our Dakota brethren.

that's why some folks don't want an honest accounting of the history of the building of America to be taught in school...just teach the idyllic ideals and values....

Are kids not learning about history?

I went to the same public school my kids went to.

They were taught basic history as well.

Sure they added a bunch of sexual/gender disfunction & perversion but unless you're taking electives that I'm not aware of there's no real danger from the republican club
