New to the site. Have bought some Cohiba red dots. they smell like cow manure.

is this normal?

are those cigars on here authentic?

Welcome!

"Barnyard" is the optically preferred description. "Earthly" is sometimes substituted. fog

General Cigars owns the non-Cuban Cohiba brand and the Red Dots are one of the mainstays of the line. I'mma sure CBid wouldn't sell fakes.

If you haven't already, let your cigars rest for a few weeks before trying one.

Are you wanting to know if a company located in PA is selling Cuban cigars? Hopefully, you already know the answer to that. On the other hand, I know a guy offering a discount on pre-cut Victor Sinclairs.

Something wrong with the smell of cow manure? It reminds me of home in the spring.

They're real Cohiba red dots. The problem is real Cohiba red dots aren't really very good. Might smell the same depending on how long they've sat in the shop. Go with Palama's resting advice

As far as readily available and going for a decent price, I'd recommend trying some of the Man o War and Diesel blends. Those tend to take some rest time also and can be harsh at first. Diesel Whiskey Row Sherry Cask is excellent. La Aurora has some good blends IMO. Tatuaje Tattoo is another good, fairly budget smoke. I'm also a sucker for Asylum and CLE.

Higher on the pay scale I'd go for some La Flor Dominicans, La Aroma de Cuba, Illusione, other Tatuaje, and Southern Draw.

Don't let us dissuade you if Cohiba is your thing. Everyone's palate is different. But try some different blends just to be sure. Exploring is fun

Oh dear. Disclaimer: smoking is totally subjective and one man's treasure may be another's dog turd. For me preferred size is anything 50 ring gauge or less. Think robusto generally with corona gorda being my ideal. Also I tend to like strong and peppery which is not everyone's cup of tea

So quick glance through blend offerings and I did not look at specific lots for sizes.
Asylum 13 Ogre - if they don't have the 5x50 don't bother. I'm an Eiroa ho but those logs sizes are ridiculous
La Flor Dom Air Bender or Double Ligero
La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor Reserva
Oliva Master Blends III
Roma Craft Cromagnon or Cromag Aquitaine
Southern Draw Jacobs Ladder or Kudzu
Tatuaje Black Label
Warped Futuro

Blew past that 3 mark, but showed some restraint. Again, didn't check sizes. Corona to robustoish size would be my ideal.

For the love of all that's holy, keep a window open to compare retail prices to current bids. You'd be amazed at the lengths people go to win a bid. Oh yeah, and losing is a sign of weakness. Z will never give me that camping invite if I don't throw that in there

I smoke the red dots on occasion. Kinda like em. Haven’t had the Roma craft or the ogre. Guess I’m gonna have to try these now. I’ve had some of sun overs smokes. I think he’s got good taste

OK, mild revision.

Skip Asylum, and LFD, Roma Craft and probably LadC.

Southern Draw - aim for Rose of Sharon
La Aurora 107 or the Cameroon, or Ecuador preferidos.
Tatuaje usually mediumish range so would still give a try

Arturo Fuentes would be a good choice too. I like Hemingways, but others are better able at speak on AF across the board

Thank you. Just to make sure. My pallette goes for smoother milder cigars. I find some others to be BITTER.

I've had a Cuban Cohiba esplanado and I really liked it.

So from your list, are any of these smooth, mild or are they otherwise?

thanks again!

Based upon what I’ve tried, here are a few that fit into the smoother, milder category:

Ashton - just plain Ashton, not the Symmetry, VSG, ESG, etc. lines. A good array of vitolas are available on CBid

Diamond Crown - the #4 Robusto, 5.25 x 54 vitola is currently on auction

Dunhill Aged series - quite mild, 8-9-8 Lonsdale, Corona and Robusto are listed

Macanudo Cafe Hyde Park and Gold - both lines are offered up

Montecristo White - a good morning with coffee smoke

Of course ymmv. Good luck finding cigars that you like.

I rarely see Hemingways on auction here but when I do, only 1, 2 at best, vitolas offered up at the same time. The Classic and Masterpiece are the only ones I’ve seen.

But back to OP. Given BA’s penchant for milder, smoother cigars as well as (…perhaps…) budgetary limitations, I would hold off on the Fuentes. At some point in time his palate will change and he can come back for more advice / suggestions.

Barnyard/manure is a common fragrance during a pre-light sniff among the vast array of cigar offerings...

the Henry Clay Tattoo comes to mind... a very good decently priced cigar

You mentioned bbitterness.

How soon from purchase are you smoking?

How wet are you storing?

Try keeping them in a sealed container like a Rubbermaid or gladware or something with a 65% Boveda pack. Wait 2 months before you even open the container again.

I had similar issues when I was new. Thought I was buying good cigars based off the advertising and vendors descriptions/ brand recognition. I also stored at 70% probably higher using just 1 way humidifier like floral foam n stuff. Hot/bitter, burn issues like splitting and tunneling I thought were just normal. But several people recommended what I did above and it turned them into decent smokes. Not great, but smoked better, less off flavors. And then I quit smoking general/altadis cigars altogether and only bought better brands.

5 Vegas Triple-A have a wonderful barnyard pre-light aroma also. An absolute steal at CB prices. Still waiting to try the box pressed...

Haven't smoked one in a decade or so. I thought they were a bit strong and lacking flavor besides being overpriced.

The few I've smoked were pretty tasty, but nowhere near worthy of the bloated brick and mortar MSRP.

Agreed, and RP 2003 are quite tasty as well, ironically much better than the 1979. CAO Anniversary are a good choice as well.

I had a Melanio maduro today, and it had that heavy barnyard smell out of the cello. It was delicious.

It has been a long time since I had a red dot . I remember them having a really strong smell and did not taste all that great either. Let them rest a while and see if that helps . If it don't throw them in the trash and buy better cigars. Life is to short to smoke **** I mean manure or whatever in the hell you are trying to smoke.
