About time! Trump blasts ‘gutless’ leaders over COVID boosters

New York Daily News

Former President Donald Trump is taking a dig at politicians like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis who refuse to say if they got the COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.

Calling those who evade the booster question “gutless,” Trump suggested that they are trying to avoid offending anti-vaxxer supporters even though they know the booster shot saves lives.

“They don’t want to say it. Because they’re gutless,” Trump said in a new interview with the conservative One America News Network. “You got to say it. Whether you had it or not. Say it.”

Trump didn’t name DeSantis in the interview that revealed a rare rift between the two. But there is little doubt he was referring to the rising GOP star, who awkwardly dodged questions about whether he had received a COVID-19 vaccine booster in a recent interview.

DeSantis instead said that he had “done whatever I did, the normal shot” in an interview with Maria Bartiromo on Fox Business Network.

DeSantis asserted that people should not be pressured to disclose their vaccination status, a common refrain among conservatives and anti-vaxxers.

That didn’t cut it with Trump, who says he has gotten a booster.

“I watched a couple of politicians be interviewed and one of the questions was, ‘Did you get the booster?’ Because they got the vaccine,” he said, a description that applies to DeSantis, as opposed to some other leaders who refuse to say if they got vaccinated at all.

“And they’re: ‘Oh. oh,’ ” he said with a dismissive smirk. “The answer is: yes.”

“President Trump did not mention Governor DeSantis in that interview, so I wouldn’t want to make assumptions,” said DeSantis spokeswoman Christina Pushaw in an email Wednesday. “In Florida, COVID-19 vaccination (including boosters) is a private medical decision for each individual to make.”

Trump reportedly views DeSantis as a potential rival for control of the GOP, even though the governor has repeatedly proclaimed his loyalty to the former president.

Trump takes credit for spearheading the development of the COVID-19 vaccines and even political opponents call the program a bright spot in his otherwise chaotic management of the killer pandemic.

He has recently become more outspoken about supporting the vaccination effort, even as a big chunk of his political base has refused to get the shot.

“The vaccine has saved tens of millions of people throughout the world,” Trump added.

Trump also pooh-poohed anti-vaxxer disinformation about the supposed dangers of the lifesaving vaccines and boosters.
“I’ve had absolutely no side effects,” he said. “Nothing special.”

Non issue for me. I don't care if Desantis or Trump is vaccinated as long as they are committed to NOT mandating it for other people. I'm not sure what Trump thought he had to gain out of posturing llike this. Of course he did a lot of things without considering "what have I got to gain and what have I got to lose". I think campaigning against Desantis this early will prove to be a flawed strategy.

Despite my opinion of Trump, I think it is a very good strategy because: 1) Most Americans believe in the vaccine, which includes plenty of Dems and Independents he must to get to vote for him to win again. He got accolades from Bidden for it. So, I think he is simply moderating his political position; and 2) Desantis is getting BIG real fast and is definitely posturing himself for the next presidential election. This threatens Trump if Desantis doesn't fall in line behind him.

He’s pissing on a political bush he isn’t “moderating” that’s something that people who don’t like him or Gov Desantis will say because the narrative fits the bias.

He was POTUS when the non-vaccine vaccine was developed and he was POTUS when the position came with a rabid watchdog media that was willing to lie and fabricate for the chance to crucify him. He isn’t going to have people from his “party” not say how great the vaccine is.

I love how people are shocked by his actions at times. He is entirely predictable. He isn’t some wild loose cannon…..

Some people actually think Trump is a staunch conservative. d'oh! Dummies!

Desantis instinctively has some principled conservative stripes anyway. It seems Robert doesn't like that about his governor.
If Desantis doesn't want to say whether he got the booster jab or not because it's not anyone else's GD business, what's wrong with that?

I've preached it... don't think anyone wanted to hear it... I've argued that he's not even a conservative at all.

I stand by that statement.

He only cloaks himself as a conservative.

That’s why I was always surprised that the Democrats hated him so much.

Anyone think many people like Trump? My thought is many people do not like Clinton or Biden. Obviously I might be totally wrong.

Thanks Danm & Robert!

I would start such a thread but that would be like eating salt directly from the container. It's much better spread evenly throughout the dish

That said, one man's trash is another man's treasure is a wonderful saying, but a horrible way to find out you're adopted

Trump annoyed me but at least he said funny things.
I can't imagine why anyone would like Clinton or Biden, although some people with bad taste here voted for both of them I'm sure because Trump was Hitler and stuff.

Which is why I feel treasured here. Yet it doesn't erase the pain of being discarded so long ago
