Hey Red Cross. Question for you.

Have seen commercials for your company. Give blood etc etc.

Heard also that one donation can save as many as three lives.

Also know due to disease, travel. sexual proclivities, and the appetites for people to get a new tattoo on a regular basis, the number of people who can give is becoming smaller all of the time.

Once a person gives blood- after the initial direction to the juice boxes and cookies, is a reminder you can give again in 60 days. Okay.

How about a little something.... you know.... for the effort? What price to you put on lives? (Guess you could ask me the same thing). How about $1,000 per donation? If that pint of blood saves three people, isn't $333 a bargain for a human life?

Not worth it, eh? How about $100? $33.33 a life. Still no?

Big thing in my world is Do Your Actions Match Your Words. To me, you are falling short.

Ok, so the last time I donated, there was information provided on how if I give again within a certain window of time, I could be eligible for an Amazon gift car valued at $10 (subject to terms, limitations and exclusions and the gift card you may or may not get will be received in 60-120 days if qualified).

Something about the arrangement doesn't sit entirely well with me.

Am not trying to get people to not give blood. Many of us here either have needed it or have loved ones who needed it. Seems like they are getting off on the cheap.

Are lives truly worth nothing to you? Unless of course someone gives plasma.

Not a rant as much as a curiosity.

The Red Cross Did some real shady stuff at the end of WWII... alleDgEdly

So did the Catholic diocese in Venice Italy...
I believe what the fishes did was way worse...
Like helping nazis escape to south America, uraguay, Paraguay, Chile, Argentina...all Catholicism countries after Spanish conquering...

my daughter regularly gave blood while she was in college for a couple of years...she did so about once a month or so...they continued calling our house for her for a few years after she graduated, but she had moved out by then...

my wife and I said, "it's the vampires calling for Lauren"

I went to donate when I was in college in the 70's, but the ARC determined I had hemophilia and urged me to get tested...turns out I have a rare blood disorder, which makes me ineligible to donate

Buddy of mine got me the Bonfire box set for my birthday years ago. 4 disc set.

Came with an AC/DC bottle opener... which is in my tacklebox. Guitar pick, too, but I have no idea where that went.

I gave regularly as a young buck, then got the Hep C letter from the Red Cross.

It wasn't Hep C, just elevated liver enzymes that I already knew about.
But man. That letter sucked the wind out of me.
I almost cancelled my date that night. Or worse, I almost brought a condom.

Saving the best for last?

If the question is "best AC/DC song" and the answer isn't Rosie, then you didn't hear the question properly.

For a few years at work, I was a volunteer blood drive coordinator for our area. One of our local hospitals is the South Eastern Burn Center. They invited us to lunch and a tour of the burn center, they needed blood. They had burn patiaents waiting on surgeries simply because they did not have an adequate supply of blood. Meanwhile, I heard so mny BS excuses for not donating it was rediculas. If you have a real reason not to donate, then don't, just get someone else to take your place.

FWIW, we had both Red Cross and Sheppard Blood, I heard al sorts of stories about both, so what, most of it is an excuse not to donate.

Minus medical conditions, they are all personal choices not to give. I’ve given a few gallons over the years, most recently in November and will probably continue to. If they would pay people, they’d get more blood. Apparently they don’t need more.

Some balls are held for charity
And some for fancy dress
But when they're held for pleasure
They're the balls that I like best
My balls are always bouncing
To the left and to the right
It's my belief that my big balls
Should be held every night

Like organ donation, there are ethical problems. There are companies that pay for plasma donations, my cynical POV says current blood donation organizations like the way it is, for whatever reasons.

hats off to you, blood donations measured in gallons rate much karma credit.

I was also tasked with coordinating and publishing the bi-annual ARC blood drive for our college district. I'd meet with the student governments at each campus so they'd get the word out to their peers. I sent emails and reminders and got posters made for the faculty and staff lounge areas. The students always made it worthwhile. Few faculty and staff, except at the main campus.

The most discouraging was the turnout at the administrative district offices: one year only eight people donated out of about 400 employees at that site.

Sad. sad. I also had problems encouraging blacks to donate. All sorts of issues, Tuekeege Experiment and other problems, not to mention an old white guys trying to talk them into donating. Sickle Cell Anemia patients, especially teenagers, often require total blood replacement therpy and while there are the various blood types, there are other markers that improve the match and only come from donars of the same race.

I solved the problem by recruting a young black woman to take over as blood drive coordinator.

When my son was born the birthing wasn't without incident. Later, the surgery went bad and she needed three pints. Pledged to give a gallon for every pint she needed. Achieved that. Not sure what my total is at.

Maybe the Red Cross sees is like sex. If you can get it for free, why pay for it.

More like desperate, LOL Some might even call it white guilt, but when something is just wrong and you have a chance to make it better you just have to act. It did lead to some (very) frank and interesting conversations with black people that might otherwise not have happened.

Also when you have a rightious cause, in your mind, it might get you thinking you have licence to be a a bully. It really doesn't, of course, and I knew I had to setp away before I ended up with premature carrier realingement.

My question would be does the Hospital charge you a fee for the blood you need as a result of a surgery?

I've never been too enthused by the fact that the Red Cross people are getting paid for doing what they do, but the donors get stiffed for the blood they give...

Unsure. Think it might be part of a package deal.

Get one free pint of blood with the purchase of a hospital Tylenol ($80 per).

It’s a blood donation the way I see it. I don’t want anything for mine. I’m not selling. Just trying to help.

I do see your point. My father is on dialysis. They can have mine for free

I’d encourage anyone that can to go ahead and donate. Lots of folks out there need some.

I will agree some of the tests are a bit much but I guess they need good clean blood which makes sense.

Just the same I think any organs that are in good shape when a person passes should be donated. Someone can use them thangs.
