Spent many hours walking back an forth to classes in Madison in the summer heat and the dead of winter listening to this album from Herbie Hancock.

Love his rendition of Watermelon Man.

Nothing like walking off a hangover on the way to class and listening to some mellow jazz like Miles Davis, John Coltrane and stuff... and stuff.

Then when the blood is pumping, take the short cut along the abandoned train tracks to the Engineering Campus... Pipe in some JB on your Walkman... he'll keep your feet moving

or some Maceo Parker (The lead of the Horny Horns, James Brown's horn section).

When James Brown was incarcerated for trying to out run the cops in a two state chase while under influence of PCP back in the late 80's, his main band members split off keep going.

Maceo Parker (saxophone) was the the lead of his horn section (known as the Horney horns) along with Fred Wesley (trombone) toured on their own.

The "Funky Drummer", Clyde Stubblefied, did shows in bars in Madison in the 90's. He made Madison, his home.

Probably played once or twice a month in various bars in town. He did the circuit in and around the area. I met him in the alley when I went out for a smoke on the break and talked briefly with him. Real down to earth guy. He used local college students to pull together the rest his band (horns vocals, guitars..). It was never the same folks though. He used his name and reputation to pull in a crowd and the main bill. He wanted to get the local kids exposure since some record dudes would come up from Chicago to check out the talent.

Like $10 admission to see a legend. His "Funky Drummer" is the one of the most sampled/copied drum beat.

Maceo Parker, when he was touring, was an awesome show. Did mostly small venues up close and personal. I've seen him numerous times. He was one of the headliners on the bill for the Rhode Island Jazz fest back in the mid 90's (?).

The Rhode Island Jazz Fest , in my opinion, is a bucket list thing. Been there with the young hippies and old school old people. Nice weekend away. I'm too old for that but I wouldn't mind going back and revisit it looking through my kids' eyes.

Blue Man Group is on the horizon in March. My kids and friend with her autistic son... It will blow his mind (checked to make sure it's not too much stimulus for him, super excited for that)

Late July, doing the EAA air show in Oshkosh, WI. Super excited to do that too. Biggest air show in the world (warning to 8-track.... I'll be in your neighborhood in late July). Gotta book flights in the next week or so.

Ahh.
1964.
The year I told my parents they had another 12 months before they could conceive me.

Never seen that before. Thanks for the link. It led me to this one that adds a little history and back story on how the song was conceived.
