So after 5 years in storage, I’m finally putting my hifi system back together. One of the components is a 5-disc changer that was given to me by one of my former Sony co-workers. I don’t really care for the clunkiness of it and was thinking of using a spare DVD player as my primary CD player instead. Prior to that, I only had single disc players. Does / Has anyone used a DVD player in lieu of a hifi CD player and noticed any audio difference?

Size is an issue, but without the 5 disc one can't continue the quest for the perfect shuffle. Yes, I love to listen to an album in it's entirety, but when you get that perfect blend of genres, styles, tempo, etc. It's like the mix tape handed down to you from God himself.

Fair warning: No Floyd in the shuffle. Too many cross-track tunes. It's quite jarring

Only a novice here, but I guess that would depend on your audio connection. What is the connection format?

Old school hardwire.

Gold plated RCA cables
12 ga OFC speaker wire

All components will, eventually, be housed in an oak rack. Speakers probably no more than 6’ from the rack.

Sounds like a sweet set-up, but definitely old school. The RCA cables will not give you the quality audio output that an optical cable or HDMI cable will provide, let alone the speaker wire. The short distance to the speakers will help. I'm guessing you probably already guessed this being the audiophile you are. I'm sure it will sound great though.

Yup.

Actually the CD changer has a digital out but since I never really liked using it, never bothered to upgrade the connection. Then again, I'm not sure if the receiver has a digital input port. One thing that will never change are the speakers. I bought them from the Stereo Warehouse in San Luis Obispo back in '75 along with a 80w Pioneer integrated amp for a little over $1022 shipped. The re-cone job cost me more than that! But, I love those speakers! I'mma rock 'n roll guy at heart so my JBLs are perfect for what I like to listen to. Fo' sure they'll never leave our house until I do.

Still trying to figure out what to do about a turntable but gonna delve into that once I get everything set up and figure out where I'm gonna put the records, if and when I get back into vinyl.

I hope you're talking about albums and not some 70's 80's clothing wear because I don't think you'll be able so slide into those outfits without some serious slathering of lubrication.

Feeling like Danm.

Finally got the bug to put everything back together so made some temporary space for the equipment and pulled out the boxes with the woofers. Realized space was a little tight so decided to take the components out so I could then take those boxes out of the room. A little bit of cleaning but otherwise, everything looked clean.

Put the woofers back into their cabinets and hooked them up to the receiver.

Plugged the receiver into the wall outlet.

Pressed the Power button.

No click, no lights, no nothing.

Nada.

Zippo.

Checked connections, changed wall outlet. Same dead-azz nothing.

Unplugged everything, boxed up the receiver, put the speakers back into a corner and covered them so that our granddaughters wouldn't play with them.

Gotta call around to see if someone can take a look at the receiver. Will take this opportunity to look for a new intergrated amp while I'm at it.

Man, I was really looking forward to listening to some Neil Young and Eric Clapton! Brick wall

Palama, I would check the power supply in the receiver. Many of the old-school receivers had a small fuse.

This could probably be fixed without a huge expense.

That’s the first thing I thought of too.

My h.s. classmate uses a guy that is reasonable so I’mma gonna give him a call tomorrow. Hopefully he can also fix up a couple of cassette decks I have, a Sony and Nakamichi 700.

Palama,
If you have to spend money, think about a 5.1.2 tv sound bar kit (costco or samsung directly) that you can stream to directly from your laptop or phone. best sound in my life...

What kinda receiver is it? Make and model? If you got nothing from the beginning, it is almost assuredly a fuse that you don't need a tech for. It's prolly got access right on the back...most likely a spring-loaded "push and turn" type. Would take less than a minute to change. Just need to know the right fuse. For that, I need make and model and I'll tell you

We bought a sound bar for the new TV but considering how much I paid to get my woofers re-coned, old-school stereo equipment is the direction I'm staying with. And I know it's kinda dinosaur-ish to stay in that mode but cranking up my JBLs to some Allman Brothers or spacing out to Santana's "Caravanserai" is where I wanna get back to.

Ok.....looked it up. Don't see any mention of a fuse. I know it's there somewhere but it does not appear to be consumer accessible. It's a lovely piece of gear, though, and appears to be worth saving. The 5.1 Surround is first gen and probably not that great but the stereo side of things looks very decent. Class A at lower volume and 85w per channel. Service manual was fantastic. Looks like a dream to work on. Wish we weren't 10k miles apart...lol.

That's what I was thinking too. I used to have the 1st generation ES integrated amp, TA-F555ES (...or something like that...) but the volume knob was f'ing up unfortunately by that time, Sony didn't have the IC to repair it so I junked it (...big mistake...). I called one of my buddies in the sales department to look for something new and he ended up buying and then giving me the receiver. He used his leftover bonus money, which could only be used on in-house Class B inventory (...old unsold stock, open or damaged boxes or repaired units that were never picked up...) to pick up the receiver. I was pretty stoked.

So yah, will look for a stereo equipment repair shop and hope it won't cost me an arm and a leg to get repaired.

Thanks again!

FINALLY!

Put everything together and fired it up. Sounds as good as I remember!

My old receiver couldn’t be repaired so my Sony buddy ordered a new one from the Sony Store using his employee discount. Nothing special, rather plain-Jane but has enough power and none of that AV stuff that I’ll probably never use. Threw everything together this morning, including a spare DVD player. Put on a Genoa Keawe CD just to see if I could get sound out and yes, indeed, all was good. Switched to a mixed Santana CD and spaced out to “Samba Pa Ti”, “Song of the Wind” and “All the Love of the Universe”. Had the speakers about 4’ apart, perpendicular to each other and sat in the middle of them. The headphone experience without the headphones. Didn’t quite crank it up but I know it was louder than what my wife would normally approve of. I think she let me go knowing I’ve been waiting for this day for a long time.

Speaking of the wife, she wants to re-paint the room so set-up with be temporary and nothing like the final layout (…at least the layout I’d like…). Once that’s done, I’ll move a dresser out and bring back the stereo and CD racks. Filling them back up will be another small project.

And then there’s that whole “discussion” about getting a new turntable….

You can have one, but you'll have to leave the money in a Dollar General bag in a garbage can at the Walmart in Poughkeepsie, NY, trade cars no less than three times, and pick up the CD player from behind the order box of the KFC in Lancaster, PA.

Any thoughts?

Bose 791 vs DI 8R?

The Definitve is definitively cheaper soooooo,... yeah.

Seems to have good reviews

I know literally nothing about ceiling speakers but when I did a quick comparison on the Crutchfield site, the DI 8Rs were priced at $359 each vs. $599 for a pair of the Bose 791IIs - or is there an older version of the 791s that’s more expen$ive? If the pricing is correct then maybe look into the discounted price on the Klipsch CDT-5650-CII? At $249 each, they almost look like a steal!

Either way, the one thing about speakers is, ultimately you gotta listen to them. IMHO, comparing specs and reviews helps maybe when looking at comparably priced products but the ear test is the one that should sway your buying decision. Oh, and of course, the pocketbook since that’s always a major part of the process.

The problem I ran into was the lack of in store setups where you could compare many brands/models. You could compare wireless headphones and smart watches to your heart's delight though

Back in the day, fog and maybe they still do, but you could go into a car audio place and they'd have all their speakers set up on big display boards. The frond ends were also part of the display so you could go through, say, the Sony XR-7400 and select different speakers to see how they matched up. I kinda see ceiling speakers to be, in very simple terms, car stereo speakers hung downwards, so no big deal if they weren't set up "properly".

But space is money and ROI rules the retail bottomline so the space needed for multiple display boards could be too much to spare.

Yeah, I'll get into Magnolia home theater (aka Best buy)before I buy. Not opposed to just paying a pro since youse guys aren't the discount cigar forum version of consumer reports I was hoping for. 😁

Never heard the DefTec speakers but one of the wealthier members & a hifi head at the lounge recommended them. As you can dial back the treble in reflective spaces like bathrooms & kitchens & dial up in absorbing spaces like bedrooms & living rooms on each individual speaker.

Never built a hut from the ground up for myself before but I'm trying to make it a decent hut.

There are plans for a walk-in humidor in the basement.

Of course the focus is the back porch since I'll be renting out the herf shed & pool with the old hut.

I have considered annexing the pool & cabana since the new hut will be right next door on the pool side. But the point is to downsize & reduce maintenance 🤔

Hopefully I'll be able to buy the hut behind the 2 properties in a couple years when the elderly couple who walks their dog through my land passes on.

I'll have a decent start to a compound I can start my own cult with. Lord willing of course
