So I went to buy ammo yesterday and I knew it would be interesting since we now background check for buying ammo. Well…I got rejected like many do. Turns out they don’t really do a background check and instead do a database check.

They check for Automated Firearms System records through the California Firearms Application Reporting System (CFARS). This is the gun registry database. The system couldn’t find me so I got rejected.

So if you’ve never bought a gun in California or registered a gun you can’t buy ammo. A resident can’t ship or carry ammo into the state because that’s illegal.

I actually am in the database. When I moved here I had to register my guns with attorney general Kamala Harris because if you bring a handgun into the state you are considered a firearms importer by law. The problem is I am in the database at my old address. It matches on name, address, state ID#, and birth date.

Now I need to create a CFAR account and enter my current information. The next step will be to try to link my existing AFS records to my CFAR and my correct address.

After that I can wait some unknown period of time and try to buy ammo again.

One of the recommendations to solve this quicker is to just go buy a new gun and sit out the waiting period.

My wife is a native Californian. We even lived there for a couple of years back in the lata 80's. And - my son lived there for a couple years as well - until he moved to Nevada 2 yrs ago. That state is such a disaster at this point my wife and I refuse to even visit there. Not a chance that I would spend one dollar of my hard earned money to support that insanity! Nope. We've already got our retirement spots picked out. We'll be doing the 'snowbird' routine - traveling between Montana (10 acres purchased) and South Carolina. My projection is @ 8 yrs and I'm out of NJ for good. ThumpUp

This is a load of crap. If you don't have the gun according to their records, then selling ammo to you would keep it out of the hands of all those gun owning maniacs.

I agree 100% SOB. I'll guarantee you that their rationale is that if you don't own a gun you don't need ammo and if you need ammo without a registred gun - then you probably have an illegal firearm. I know enough California liberals (several are my in-laws lol) - that's how they think.

If you buy ammo out of state you have to ship it to a gun dealer and do the background check process.

Cal DOJ is known to visit Reno gun shows and Cabelas to spot Californians buying stuff.

So I tried to use my iPad and go through the process of changing my address and linking up my records. Website froze every time. State employee IT are the absolute worst. Now I’m going to try from a computer. My expectation is I’m going to have to get on the phone with someone at the DOJ to fix this. That will surely be pleasant to deal with a real live state employee.

Still infringed.

What if someone in a much more unrestricted state, shipped some ammo, entirely by accident completely flubbed the address, and it just happened to show up on your doorstep?

That may start encroaching on some federal rules at that point I s'pose.

What if you trained some pigeons, and then when they were out flying around, coincidentally over state lines, they accidentally got tangled up in a round or two.

You would be obligated to free them for the good of the wildlife, and you couldn't just dispose of the ammo for the good of the populace. And it's not your fault this keeps happening. You would have no choice but to store it for safekeeping

Perhaps you could go to Ukraine. I just read that Federal, Remington, and CCI have pledged to donate 2,000,000 rounds of ammo to Ukraine to help "defend democracy". I find it curious that they're able to increase production to be able to send millions of rounds of ammo to Ukraine for free but they haven't been able to increase production for the past 2 YEARS to be able to defend democracy or keep ammo prices below $1/round here in the US. Just sayin .....

When I was shooting a lot more I stocked up, and have saved brass pretty much since I started shooting.

I have enough lead, primers, and powders to be a hazmat site.

No worries about ammo availability for a long time. Progressive auto press once dialed in cranks out a few hundred rounds an hour.

I dont know what current prices and availability are on reloading equipment and components but at least start with saving brass. If anything the scrap value is high. But with the hoops you gotta jump through, a reloading setup may be worthwhile.

Did you ever think that if you don't buy a gun ..........then you don't need ammo. Beside a baseball bat works better away and you can get some exercise in. Have a happy trip to Tezas

The first step to freedom. Do settle on a new location before putting the house up for sale.

If you haven't settled on Florida, consider South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. It's had to beat no income tax, though other states have generous tax exceptions for military retirees and not as many hurricanes, crappy drivers, or tourists as Florida.

I looked at a few places when I was down there. Nothing near big cities, I don't prefer to be any closer to that than I already am. I want to be away from everything. When I bought my house it was right on the edge of being away and being close. Still is, but the close part has moved a lot closer over the years.

My favorite was a 10 acre parcel near Christmas, FL. In the middle of nowhere, but still 30 minutes from somewhere.

10 acres and had a barn on site which had fallen down. Has septic field, unknown condition. Has natural gas connection according to the listing, I didn't actually talk to anyone. Did see electric ran to a pole with a meter at the end of the driveway where the fallen barn was.

Only $90k. Land was partly swamp and about half was densely wooded. Everything overgrown so hard to really see it all but I could picture clearing 2 acres in the middle on the "high" ground and building a small barn to run utilities and probably a hurricane shelter. And then a camper pad for a winter vacation spot. Wife says no.
