10 years ago today I had open heart surgery, a maze procedure, 2 valves repaired not replaced, and both Atriums downsized. Beforehand I remember thinking well at least I made it to 52 but frank it, I will not be celebrating St Patrick's day. I was clinically dead on the table 2 minutes and 27 seconds. Durring my December 2021 oblation I was clinically dead for 54 seconds. Before hand I thought frank it, I have an awful lot of living still to do, and it is priceless living. My life is so much more now. I have truly been blessed multiple time in multiple ways. May you all have a blessed and joyous life!!!

Be ready to give an account is the precious lesson this anniversary
Thanks for sharing Allen!

It made me recall my near death date.
(Hit by truck) I'd take that over the heart attack, but either way

I was 17 in late July of 90'

So teach us to number our days,
That we may present to You a heart of wisdom.

Glad you're still with us SS2! I like Dg had a similar experience when I was 15 yrs old (in the early 80's). I was walking across the street - some guy ran a red light and hit me. I ended up with a triple fracture of my skull (yes it explains ALOT!). I too was clinically dead on the operating table. Paddles used to bring me back and everything! I've got plenty of weird/creepy stories to go along with those 4+ mins (for another time). I have considered every day since then a gift from G-d and have tried to live them accordingly. And I, like Dg, would take that over a heart attack. The whole thing happened so fast I didn't even realize it.

Maybe you, Dg, and me should get together one evening and compare notes - as it were. Shhh

Interesting that you had a unique experience during that time. I also had interesting experiences both times. I rolled a pickup 4 times in a row in Wyoming and walked away. The cab was basically crushed. I walked away with only a fractured rib. Interestingly there were 2 quick disconnect hitch balls loose in the cab, they blew out the front window, but missed us. I have 3 or four additional incidents of how the frank am I walking away from this.

It was in the last decade when I developed AFIB that my doctor at that time wanted me to go to New York and see a doctor that would temporarily end my life to see if that would cure the AFIB. It didn't sound good to me, so I refused.

Wait, shouldn't SS3 be the name of the OP.

Welllll....

Speyyyyy....

I can relate....

I have faced death many many times over...

Once @ Miami international ...
Once in a C.A. jungle...
Twice in a 69' 350 Camaro ...
Once after a medical allergic reaction...
Several (3) unmentionable situations...
And
N.I.N.E....COUNTEM' ....
NINE FREAKIN FBI-SSG MURDER ATTEMPTS.....
* BY SOME REALLY SICK FELON PRICKS ( MALE AND FEMALE) MASQUERADING AS FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT
FBI AGENTS...

SO, TELL ME...

DID YOU LEAVE YOUR BODY?

DID YOU FLOAT ABOVE THE OPERATING TABLE?

DID YOU SEE A LIGHT?

DID YOU SEE A TUNNEL?

DID YOU SEE YOUR DECEASED FAMILY MEMBERS?

IM JUST REALLY COURIOUS...

NEVER ONCE DID I SEE A "TUNNEL"...
NEVER ONCE DID I SEE A "LIGHT"...
BUTTTT...
@t least 4 different times I saw my entire life flash before my eyes....big time...and it was so freakin' quick like ...I thought this is it AND I WAS A GONER...

Life is definitely precious... and fragile. It can be lost in a split second. Good thing is that you able to keep chugging along. Be it by the grace of God or grace of modern medicine, it wasn't your time.

Other than doing stupid $hit and challenging Darwin awards (stuff I did when young and stupid), the closest I came to death was my first huge seizure in 2018. Luckily I had friends over that weekend when I blacked out in the living room and they found me turning purple. That lead to a 10 visit stay in the hospital, ER, ICU where I had a couple more events... I only remember bits and pieces, just snap shots as I woke in and out of conscience the for 8 days. The last 2 days was getting me stable enough to go home but there were 8 days of my life that are completely gone.

My experience pales compared to yours and others but it was freaking scary for me when I was able reflect on what could have been. If I didn't have friends over for the weekend who found me turning purple on the floor and call 911, I'd probably not be typing this right now. That experience has given me a different attitude on my life going forward - I try to keep it simple and live one day at a time.

Agreed, but my brush with death is not comparable to others'. I didn't flat line, no bright lights or anything coming down from the skies. It was just a sign post in my life and it made me reflect on what is really important while we do laps around the Sun. I believe in a "higher power" some may call it God, others may call it something else.

I don't think it's coincidence what happened to me on that day while friends were over on that weekend. Lots of variables could have led to a different outcome but something put them there for me at the right time and the right place. Another freaky thing was my brother was en route to Germany for business trip that weekend when it happened - Milwaukee to Boston to Germany with a layover in Boston. He got word while he was sitting at Logan airport (Boston) and postponed his meetings and flight the flight to Germany then spent 5 days at the hospital with me until the Doctors said I was OK. Again, I only remember small mental snapshots of him being there.

I'm truly blessed with loving friends and family, I'm one lucky dude to have them.

I think most on this post and topic can say the same. Either $hit a$$ luck, modern medicine or some angel watching out for us somewhere has kept us are still alive.

That said.. hold my root beer and watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZb_PKEubB8

An enlightening thread for sure. If I took the time to give this subject serious thought I’m sure I could list at least a dozen or two absolutely stupid things I’ve done that seemed like a good idea at the time. But, afterwards I felt lucky to be alive or at least with all of my arms, legs, fingers and toes. I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve it, but I definitely have had a guardian angel watching over me my entire life.

Congrats!

15 years for me next week, had my aortic replaced with a bovine composite.
I was 52 at the time.
Heart/lung machine for the duration of the surgery; its amazing knowing they stopped the heart and only allowing blood flow to get it going again.

Yep! Congrats for all you folks that had life threatening events. Worst for me was broad-siding a car that turned in front of me while I was doing 55 on a motorcycle. Had a helmet on or I would not be among you.
