Rather than hijacking and going off topic from this post (http://www.cigarbid.com/Forum/c/postmessage/?t=666655&f=7&q=4663543), I'll start another regarding squirrels and bird feeders.

Leading up to this was the following off topic discussions

Franking squirrels... them bassturds are wicked smart. Nearly impossible to keep them out of the bird feeders. Squirrel proof bird feeders are a farce.

The tree rats have special abilities. They don't officially have thumbs but have ankles that can rotate 180°

{Prolly should have posted this in the "Things I learned today" thread.}

mix up some vegetable oil and cayenne pepper and then mix it into your bird seed...squirrels
have saliva glands so they can't eat it without getting tongue fried, birds don't have saliva glands,
so it doesn't bother them...Beer

Squirrels gotta eat too. I'm not to bitter about them "stealing" food from the feeder.

I just find it intriguing that a "lower life form" can out fox simple human endeavors. Even the most common squirrel proof feeders are not squirrel proof. Short of having sharks with laser beams attached to their heads, or a coyote... it's rather hard to defeat a determined tree rat. Sometimes ya just gotta sit outside and watch nature happen. It's the little things in life.

If i was on shooms it would be AWESOME!

Rats... shrooms.... reminds me of college at the UW. Thank God laptops and social media wasn't invented yet

I don't have a handy dandy link for you, but check out Mark Rober on YouTube. Backyard Squirrel Maze 1.0 and Backyard Squirrel Maze 2.0: The Walnut Heist.

Entertaining even without shrooms

I looked it up. Them varmints are pretty smart.

The simple feeder I have is similar to the on in this video (at about the 2:15 mark) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFZFjoX2cGg. It's suspended about 18" down from a tree branch with a light chain and about 6 ft away from the tree trunk. The squirrels are able to shimmy down the chain, pry open the top and tip it so the feed spills out onto the ground. Then they go foraging in the grass for the seeds.
