So this WNBA player gets in trouble in Russia... apparently she was carrying vape pens with hashish oil residue in them. And now our state department is involved in trying to get her out of there.

Why?

Would they do that for any other regular American citizen who wasn't an athlete? I seriously doubt it.

Play stupid games in other countries... you win stupid prizes.

Maybe she is guilty in which she deserves what she gets and maybe the Ruskies are lying to use her. Wait … they would never would they?

A 6’9” lesbian wearing a Black Lives For Peace hoodie thought she could carry drugs through a Russian airport and nobody would notice? And despite being vocal and anti-American she expects the government to come to her rescue?

Um... the chances of the russkies lying is like 90%. The chances of this broad carrying weed filled vape pens is like... 100%.

And I agree with rfenst. She's an idiot.

Were the pens actually confirmed? I've read conflicting reports from her having them to the charge being totally fabricated.

Listen to her speak, I think she is transgender pre op or post op. She has 0% tits. They did an issue of female athletes showing off their bodies naked in Sports Illistrated a non sexual way. She used electricians tape to cover her nipples. Putin would hate her even more.

Eh..................I wonder, if say Larry Bird was caught with vape pens, and detained, and incarcerated.
How long would it take before our “people” get him out?
I’m guessing he’d be out.................quickly....

Try to keep up DED. I explained possible additional reasons why Putin would set her up. He passionately hates LBGTQ+ people. He does not want them in Russia. Now he has the chance to make a relatively famous American an example to the Russian people, and to America, abet for different reasons. She will be fortunate to survive, yet along ever get home. I dearly hope she survives as unscathed as possible and makes it home sooner than later.

If it was anything other than weed encrusted vape pens, I may believe the Russkies were lying. But, they picked the single most plausible story they could have, so kudos to them if they are lying.

Is it too late to binge watch some episodes of Locked-up Abroad and realize when in a foreign country respect their laws and ways of doing things, even if it’s not what you’re accustomed to? Also, with what was brewing between Russia and Ukraine travel to those countries wasn’t too smart, she should’ve just stayed home and enjoyed her dope. Hopefully when she does return home she appreciates her country a little more. Boo hoo!

not that it matters, but she wasn't a tourist, she had a contract and was playing in a league there.
WNBA players don't make yuuuuge $$$ like NBA guys do and several make additional income around the globe.

Could be guilty. Could be that she has enough fame to be a pawn used by Russia...

Like I said before if she is guilty she has it coming. She is not unfamiliar with Russian laws as she plays in their leagues every year when the WNBA is not playing. Many other American women also do as they pay better then the WNBA.

Her real job in the states pays over $227k/year (“with a potential to earn up to $500,000 between bonuses and marketing opportunities”) while this side gig in Russia pays over $1mil/year. She has a reported net worth of over $17mil, so going back to Russia when everyone was fleeing was almost as brilliant a move as taking dope with you while you do it.

not sure why it matters when she went to Russia, all I've seen is February. Russia invaded Ukraine the same month so I also don't know what you mean by "everyone fleeing" and simply don't see why that matters either.

She earns the max from her "real job" which is around a quarter of a million for a little less than a half year season. She can not earn more than that from playing. I've never been a fan of salary caps or minimums, seems unAmerican to me. Not sure why her net worth matters either.

She might be the best and biggest star in the world for women's hoops and her pay is probably 10% of the last roster spot on many NBA teams...I understand the revenue produced is a gazillion times more in the men's league, but she's on a par with, say, Kobe in her version of the sport. She certainly is a big reason for much of her league's revenue, yet that last guy on the NBA bench probably doesn't entice more than a dozen people to watch and spend money. He's certainly overpaid! But who cares?

She, like many stars of her league and leagues all over the globe, play in Russia and elsewhere in the off season where she earns 4 times what she makes here and the season is much shorter. She has been doing this for something like 6 or 7 years now, some have been at it even longer.

I'd say that makes the WNBA her side gig, y' know?

She certainly makes a lot of money, you are correct. I'm not sure why she has earned enough to no longer go for more in your view...maybe it's an American trait, get it while you can?
At what point do we tell Musk he has enough? We don't. Why her?

I'm thinking neither of us know if she is guilty as charged, at least I don't.

On January 23, the Department of State issued an update to the Level 4 Travel Advisory – Do Not Travel – for Russia due to ongoing tension along the border with Ukraine. For the full text of the updated Travel Advisory, please visit the Department’s country information page for Russia.

Do not travel to Russia due to ongoing tension along the border with Ukraine, the potential for harassment against U.S. citizens, the embassy’s limited ability to assist U.S. citizens in Russia, COVID-19 and related entry restrictions, terrorism, harassment by Russian government security officials, and the arbitrary enforcement of local law.

Due to Russia’s heightened military presence and ongoing military exercises along the border region with Ukraine, U.S. citizens located in or considering travel to the districts of the Russian Federation immediately bordering Ukraine should be aware that the situation along the border is unpredictable and there is heightened tension. Given the on-going volatility of the situation, U.S. citizens are strongly advised against traveling by land from Russia to Ukraine through this region. In addition, there is the potential throughout Russia of harassment towards foreigners, including through regulations targeted specifically against foreigners.

The U.S. government’s ability to provide routine or emergency services to U.S. citizens in Russia is already severely limited, particularly in areas far from the U.S. Embassy in Moscow due to Russian government limitations on U.S. staffing and the suspension of consular services at U.S. consulates.

If you decide to travel to Russia:

Read the country information page.
Familiarize yourself with information on what the U.S. government can and cannot do to assist you in a crisis overseas.
Have a contingency plan in place that does not rely on U.S. government assistance. Review the Traveler’s Checklist.
Monitor local media for breaking events and adjust your contingency plans based on the new information.
Ensure travel documents are valid and easily accessible.
Visit our website for Travel to High-Risk Areas.
Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive Alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
Follow the Department of State on Facebook and Twitter.
Review the Country Security Report for Russia.
See the U.S. Embassy’s web page regarding COVID-19.
Visit the CDC’s webpage on Travel and COVID-19.
Get a COVID vaccine to facilitate your travel
Understand the COVID testing and vaccine requirements for all countries that you will transit through to your destination

PS: Griner was arrest February 17th, long after warnings to not travel there. And who cares what the 10th man on an NBA roster makes? I’m certain he’d crush her in a game, far more people pay far more money to watch the NBA than WNBA, and many people at the top of their craft earn a fraction of what an NBA player makes. What earning potential does an Olympic wrestler have even if he just won 4 Olympic gold medals and is the undisputed world champ? And you should realize athletes go to Russia for the big bucks which ironically paid out by the underworld figures laundering their money through the teams.

Why someone would try to sneak what is considered contraband into Russia speaks volumes of their ability to make rational decisions. I mean sneaking vape pens from California to Texas is one thing, but into Russia? Can anyone undertake a more asinine endeavor?

My take is that it wasn’t a couple but enough to last the length of her planned stay. In her small mind she probably figured that since she was a superstar the person searching her belongings would look the other way. When that didn’t happen she had her publicist put on a full court press to make her look like a victim. Time will tell.

Russian court will hear Brittney Griner’s appeal on Oct. 25

Griner, an eight-time all-star center with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was convicted Aug. 4 after police said they found vape canisters containing cannabis oil in her luggage at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport.

By Vladimir Isachenkov | Associated Press Oct 3, 2022, 1:44pm EDT

MOSCOW — A Russian court on Monday set Oct. 25 as the date for American basketball star Brittney Griner’s appeal against her nine-year prison sentence for drug possession.

Maybe "commie" is not the right word or maybe it is, I don't know if she even has a clearly thought out political viewpoint.
But she's no right-winger, she admitted she voted for Biden and she has a left-winger's narrow distorted view of history.

She protested by not showing up when the National Anthem was played because it doesn’t represent Black Americans.

She said:

“I personally don't think it belongs in sports. ... Black people didn't have rights at that point,” It's hard disrespecting a song that didn't even represent all Americans when it was first made.”

Well "disrespecting" was a gaffe where she really meant respecting but what does the Star-Spangled Banner which was written in 1814 towards the end of the War of 1812 even remotely have to do with race?
