I am still a little unclear on this one.

So, it's not the date something actually happened, it's the date some people in one town finally found out that something happend?

It's politicians catering to a segment of society in order to garner votes. Ironically, it's the side that voted overwhelmingly against equal rights, but whatever... yay, a holiday.

Only a paid holiday if you work for the gubmint, or a bank. Not a holiday in the private sector

The date was chosen because Texas was still holding slaves 2 years after the end of the war. I do not know the exact details but the gist of it is this. That is when people showed up in Texas to enforce emancipation. I have never checked who they were, I just wanted to find out the significance of the date, if there was any.

Not true.

I’m in the private sector and starting this year it is a paid holiday. Just depends on how progressive the company is.

The weaponization of federal holidays for social control...

It's all explained here...

Juneteenth
By Tho Bishop

June 20, 2022

Quote:
Last year Congress officially nationalized Juneteenth Day as a federal holiday. While Very Serious talking heads attempted desperately to convince those that would listen that Juneteenth was a long celebrated American holiday, the reality is that the regional celebration was largely unknown by most of the nation prior to Congressional action. The episode is a useful illustration of how the state weaponizes secular holidays as a tool to promote a larger cultural agenda.

Prior to nationwide riots in 2020, Juneteenth Day was properly understood as a regional holiday celebrating the emancipation of Texas slaves. The day was understandably a time of celebration for freed Texas slaves and their descendants. Nationally, however, other states had their own days celebrating the end of slavery at times that correlated with their own history – such as Florida’s Emancipation Day which the state recognizes on May 20th. Jubilee Day, celebrated on January 1st, has also been a moment of celebration recognizing Abraham Lincoln’s signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Of course, no matter the origins of Juneteenth as a particular regional celebration, its elevation to federal status has nothing to do with the history of slavery in America. There has clearly been no recent public debate over the virtues of abolition. Instead, the day’s modern political momentum was obviously the direct response to mostly peaceful protests that engulfed the nation following the death of George Floyd and other high-profile incidents of deadly force used by police during interactions with black Americans. Then-President Donald Trump has loudly taken credit for last year’s official declaration after pitching federal recognition as part of a federal response to deal with escalated racial tensions.

Lot's of the private sector follows the Gubmint calendar. My wife's company is off today. Most of the businesses in my office building are closed (based on the empty parking garage).

Thanks for the info!

I guess I am still unsure of why the significant event/date chosen for the holiday was the date Texas got word of emancipation instead of having a federal holiday commemerating the actual emancipation for the entire nation. Anyone know the reason?

Here's a tip...don't get your history lessons from Bill Nye "da science guy"
What a dope! Frying pan

Bill Nye slapped with history lesson after claiming Juneteenth marks day 'last slaves' were freed, America built on slave labor

CHRIS ENLOE
June 20, 2022

Quote:
Bill Nye, the infamous "science guy," received a prompt history lesson on Sunday after claiming that slavery in America officially ended on Juneteenth.

What did Nye say?
In an effort to commemorate the newest national holiday, Nye claimed on Twitter that America was "built" on slave labor and that "the last" slaves were freed on June 19, 1865.

"The United States we know today was built with the labor of enslaved Black Americans," Nye wrote. "The last were not freed (officially) until 19 June 1865. Let us celebrate— and never forget."

Nye, famous for an educational science TV show, posted a picture of himself holding a pocket Constitution along with his commemorative message.

“The United States we know today was built with the labor of enslaved Black Americans. The last were not freed (officially) until 19 June 1865. Let us celebrate— and never forget.”

As historian Brion McClannahan correctly explained last year on his podcast...

Quote:
Hereditary slavery did not end in the United States until December 6, 1865, the ratification date of the 13th Amendment. Slave auctions continued in Kentucky through November 1865, five months after slavery supposedly ended on June 19th, 1865.

If the last slaves were told they were free on June 19th, then what about slaves sold into slavery AFTER that point? Would be news to them.

What I dislike is Juneteenth, and Martin Luther King day is that they are discriminatory holidays. No other holidays are based on skin color. I suppose I could celebrate them, but I have no connection to either of them.

Juneteenth is where certain people here hate on a black dude for succeeding professionally and marrying a white lady.

I heard it was when the cotton was all brought in from harvest they finally let slaves go.

But why a non word?

June19th sounds too much like whistling Dixie?

Kwanzaa at least is its own word.
Juneteenth sho' nuff sounds like ebonics fo shizzle

Ol' times there are not forgotten. Look away

I have no issues with the Martin Luther King Holiday. I don't think its discriminatory. Yes, it's named after a specific person but I think it honors more then the black rights movement in the times. My opinion is that it honors what he stood for - equal rights for all.

A well known snippet from the "I have a dream" speech: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

He may have been talking about skin color but I think this statement transcends beyond skin color and applies to every human being.

Rich or poor, CEO or some "peon" kid doing shopping cart duty at your local grocery store, or delivering news papers. An in-home heath care worker. A neighbor that shovels the walkway on a snowy day or mows the lawn of a elder neighbor without being asked. $hit, even holding the door for the person behind you... little stuff like that really defines the content of your character.

The Juneteenth holiday? I'm still scratching my head on that made up one. It seems to me as rather patronizing.

It’s the date in 1865 slaves in Texas learned they were emancipated. The actual year Of emancipation was 1863.

So, a more appropriate name for this holiday is National You Can’t Trust the Media Day.

That's a bit harsh (although pretty accurate in these times).

"National You Can’t Trust the Media Day." Now there is one of the better Hallmark Holiday's that I get behind and support.

I blame the pony express and homing pigeons for not getting the word out.

I’ll take a paid holiday for National You Can’t Trust the Media Day too!

(I wonder what the ratio is of African Americans to woke white people that actually got Juneteenth as a holiday)
