I say... bring on the state funded schools for Scientology!!!

Bring on the state funded schools for Islam!!!

Bring on the state funded schools for the Flying Spaghetti Monster!!!!!!!

LFG!!!!

Edit:

Fixed my typo :P

Edit#2:

Meh... won't let me fix it. It's forever etched it in stone.

Only one solution to this... drop the 'e' off the official spelling (it's silent anyway), it's the only logical choice.

There's a clean effective solution for this simple problem Ben..., just end all that socialism state funding of skools. FIXED! DONE!
Gubment doesn't work that way though, it works on the premise that every problem is a complex political problem and they will come up with an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong.

That's not a good solution Ray. That would promote a civilization full of stone cold idiots. People are stupid enough as it is.

The kids need to be educated. Some social programs are necessary, education is one of them.

However, they don't need to be learning about religion in school (to be fair, I don't think they need to be learning about the latest fads in human hardware modifications either).

Google Says

Quote:

re·li·gion

noun

the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods.
"ideas about the relationship between science and religion"

So I think Xenu and and the Spaghetti Monster count.

The Right keeps pushing to blend Church and State - as long as it's Christian....

Big mistake. Public funds are for public schools that do not teach any given religion.

But the Right would have us all set our watches back 300 years....

So yer saying people are too stupid to know how to educate them yoots without the government and their vast treasury of stolen loot? But you don't like yoots being groomed about the lastest fads in human hardware modifications by the gubment? Well...who are you to say that when you believe at the same time that gubment knows best?

Do you know how the children learned reading, writing and arithmetic before gubment schools? Yes, there was such a time, you know in those dark ages you envision.

I harken back to those dark times, this time from Frederic Bastiat in his masterpiece "The Law"

"Socialism, like the ancient ideas from which it springs, confuses the distinction between government and society. As a result of this, every time we object to a thing being done by government, the socialists conclude that we object to its being done at all. We disapprove of state education. Then the socialists say that we are opposed to any education. We object to a state religion. Then the socialists say that we want no religion at all. We object to a state-enforced equality. Then they say that we are against equality. And so on, and so on. It is as if the socialists were to accuse us of not wanting persons to eat because we do not want the state to raise grain.”

More like in general too unmotivated to do so. The less educated people become, the less important education becomes, the more malleable their minds. Yes... leave it to the idiots to educate their kids, a sh*t load of uneducated kids will be the outcome.

Tell me again why it's a bad thing for a parent to be able to send their kid to a religious based school using a state education voucher? Does Maine not require any accreddidation whatsoever of private schools to assure they meet some minimum standard (despite some extra lessons about faith)?

Forward thinking?

We don’t need nor benefit from a centralized government school system, this is exactly what has taken control from both parents and teacher. You’re obviously ok with one direction of forced education Brew, let me know how that turns out when the worm turns as it always does.

Brewha, BGZ, I am good with what you say except for one fact. If I send my kid to Parochial school I have accepted that I have opted out of the public school system. The government using my tax money and not allowing me to opt out of paying taxes for the public school system. That is definatly a discriminatory practice and perhaps more.

I know you and I would do almost anything we had to- to make certain our kids needs are met educationally-, but I just don't believe the masses have the same ability.

And, I simply don't believe government funds should support religious institutions.

For whatever it is worth, I used to send my kids to private religious schools, but never felt government funds should support my choices/luxury.

Look at it this way for at least a moment. A lot of people would like to send their kids to Parochial school but cannot because they cannot afford to. This is taxation without representation, why we went to war with England. People of faith are diminished daily in the United States.

Where is the fairness in that. I think in no way shape or form is the amendment properly defined today. I am very passionate about this. God, and science are not mutually exclusive, though they are presently portrayed as such.

Spey, just an FYI, the issue in this case is that in Maine, some kids don't have access to a public school, but likely are closer to a private school, so the state pays their way rather than building a new school closer to the kid:

"The program provides tuition assistance for students without a local public school to attend private institutions"

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof

The problem here is the word Congress. I would argue that a state can make tax law at a state level what they want it to be and this is an agregious over reach of the federal government.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof"

Them wurds mean Congress cannot establish a regime church like the English did and they cannot interfere with the exercise of religion. It did not prohibit the states from doing so. That is unless a state prohibited it in their state constitution, some early American states did not and already had established churches before the constitution was ratified.
For instance, even before the first amendment, the Congregational Church was established by early Puritans in New Hampshire, Connecticut and Massachusetts. "Establishment of religion" generally meant the church was taxpayer funded and/or officeholders or voters were required to take an oath stating that they adhered to the doctrines of the established church.
