Retirement of old things

Not talking about cranky old folks like Whistlebritches.

At what point do you retire your well worn T-shirts, sweat shirts, comfy old well broken in shoes and such?

I have T-shirts, sweat shirts, shorts, pants older than my kids and 90% of the people I work with at the circus. In my opinion they are still good (the clothing... the kids... that might be up for debate). May be a bit frayed at the collar and sleeves but still wearable on a typical day.

What is your tipping point that puts them from wearable to rags?

I wear my t-shirts as long as I can. Might be 10, 15, even 20 years old. When the holes get too big, they shrink too much or they become too unsightly for my wife, they go into the rag bag out in the garage and I'll use them for really dirty jobs and then throw them away. Now that I'm retired, I no longer have a need for dress pants so I've donated a bunch. Shorts are kinda treated like my t-shirts unless I can't fit into them, at that point, if they're presentable, they get donated.

Depends on sentimentality. I'm very slow to dispose of anything, but there's a few concert/vacation shirts that will never fit again, yet I'll never get rid of

Currently purging all sleep t-shirts that are XL and larger. Bought new, large and 100% cotton ones at Walmart for like $5 each.

I wear clothes until they lose molecular adhesion and just disappear

Only when the wifey refuses to be seen with me any longer or people start handing my loose change.

I do have a few trophy shirts from my marathon days that I will always keep even though they don't fit this non-marathon body. Pretty sure they shrunk up.

Plain, white tee shirts can come and go. The ones with color with printing on them all have a level of significance from either a person, event, or place. Extremely difficult to toss any of them.

About 1/3 of them are older than my son.

I start purging old shirts and shorts when I can no longer close the drawer that they are in. I receive a number of t shirts each year from suppliers and promotional deals, and golf outings. Its about time to go through the drawers and put a box together for Goodwill or Salvation Army. I do have a "saved" storage box of shirts with special meaning attached. I guess the Mrs. can raffle them off at the funeral.

I just saved a few shirts I earned at century bike rides, the rest went into the rag bag.

You may want to check any music related shirts, some are vey valuable.

If you move... you'll be astounded by how much stuff you keep that you never friggin' use.

I donated a bunch of clothes and so did my wife. If stuff I wear a lot starts to fray... buh bye.

I tend to keep t shirts until they are really shot. All that wear tends to make them feel more comfortable and I hate to give up on them. I have boxes of lightly used or new shirts which I hang on to, tho I have given a few of them away. I still have about 10 suits, but I have given away about 40 suits in a few years past. When buttoned long sleeve shirts get a little worn or stained, I wear them working in the yard to save on sunscreen and cuts on the arms.

Goodwill got about 80 of my discards this year and I have more rags than I know what to do with.

Got inspired to look for a couple of really, really old articles of clothing. They were from my senior year of high school and both from being on the football team. Found the practice jersey but not the t-shirt. Should probably wash it and put it in a Ziploc.

So it sounds like I'm in good company then.

Was thinking of purging a bunch of my old ones but, as others have said, many of the printed ones are hard to cast aside for one reason or another. Also, it seems the material t-shirts are made of these days is thinner and chintzy-er than my old ones.

I have shirts that I wear regularly that are 20 years old.

I have one pair of swim shorts that my wife bought me when we started dating, in 2004.

I have dickies work pants from the late 90's. They don't get worn much but I wore some today while staining the deck. Probably haven't worn em since the last time I painted.

Other things, they get purged occasionally but so many times it's not long after I throw out something I end up needing it.

Used to get a few pair of Dickies once a year in my painting days. Once they became so latex and oil armored as to be immobile, I'd cut the legs off for summer work

Reminds me, I had two shirts from an Irish bar for being one if the First 50 in the bar on those St. Patrick’s Days.
Give the 1990 version to my son. Still holding onto the 1989.

That reminds me I still have my heavy Maico jersey from my wiz-bang motocross days. That one is prolly a collectors item circa 1970. Or worthless?
