I grew up in a house with two cigarette smokers who quit before I left high school. There was little discussion on smoking because it was obvious that it was bad for your health. My father never smoked cigars so that was not an issue either. Although my kids are very young still (oldest just turned 4) how did you deal with teens/18 year olds who want to smoke cigars? I realize that many if not most cigar smokers actually start smoking well into their 30's, but what if? Also, how do you respond to a young daughter who wants you to quit because "smoking is bad"? I have no isssues yet, but certainly do anticipate them and any wise advice would by appreciated.

welcome to fatherhood. 1. don't ever lie to them. 2. tell your daughter she is correct but it is a small pleasure that you allow yourself occasionally and a little ice cream sunday every so often is not going to make anyone fat. 3. your son may want to be like you, be glad. he could give in to peer pressure at school and gete hooked on cigarettes, the most insidious drug ever developed. sit with him in the yard or on the porch and show him how to cut the end, burn the foot before lighting, and/or whatever ritual you go through to light a good cigar. give him s small cigar and tell him part of the smoking is sitting with a friend and enjoying the cigar and talking about whatever, that time of the day or week when all else is forgotten and only the moment counts.

Ditto. Especially #1. I'll NEVER intentionally lie to my kids. If I do Santa may not bring me any presents next year...

Actually RICK, I appreciate the sound advice. My biggest concern as the years go on will not be right vs wrong but rather in the seemingly hippocritical stance regarding tobacco in general. I never smoked cigarettes, but to pronounce an edict whereby one form of tobacco is healthier than another will probably be met with some opposition. Thanks again, because one can never be over-prepared for such questions. My biggest fear, by the way, is that one of my precious cherubs may lean towards the left, but that should be posted on the political board...

I've got 2 kids myself and I'm very hapy to report they both despise smoking. They were told the dangers from very early on including reports of the over 100 additives in those nasty butts. The only problem I encountered was that Dad (that's me) is in the medical field so how could he smoke cigars given the evidence?....I told them the truth...I checked out all the evidence, pros and cons and made an informed decision. They took that advice ok I'm happy to report. My daughter even bought me a humidor for Xmas a couple years ago (a very nice one in fact). It's so nice to be able to talk with my kids intelligently!...Hey my duaghter Samantha is off to UMASS Boston next year!........Brent

But did they ever harass him about smoking or follow in his footsteps? Inquiring minds want to know
