I wasn’t a Celtics fan while growing up and didn’t know the true greatness of Bill but the more I learned, the more I respected the man.

two consecutive college championships
Olympic Gold medal champion.
8 consecutive NBA crowns (would have been more but for a broken/sprained ankle early in the run) and 11 overall. Two as player coach.

The greatest winner in the history of team sports. Period.

And more.

Over the years I've heard the senseless argument that it was easier in an 8 team league than in today's 30 or so team league. I say it was much more difficult as the talent was more condensed.
Think of it this way, forget that Wilt Chamberlain, the greatest single force in all of sports, couldn't beat him, but guys like Walt Bellamy played for the worst teams!

RIP Big Bill.

I absolutely hated Bill Russell, the basketball player...you have to be a Laker fan to know how deep that hatred is...nearly as deep as my hatred is for the Boston Celtics...there were annual bloodlettings in the 50's and 60's when the Celtics would tear out Lakers hearts to end every season, or so it seemed, and Bill Russell led the way...

But I have a huge amount of respect for Bill Russell the man, who spoke out about racism in the US, even in his "home town" of Boston when he was winning championships for their benefit, but being treated like a "N-----" by some racists there...

RIP Mr. Russell, a great human being and still in the argument for best basketball player ever

easy for me to understand.
At least know how intimidating it was for us Celtic fans to see our guys go up against some of the greatest collections of NBA talent ever assembled.
If it could ever be possible to go back in time and replay any of those series, I'd have no trouble believing the Lakers would/could win.

West and Baylor struck fear in my heart!
