Amish Farmer Faces Fines, Prison Time for Refusing to Comply with USDA Regulations

The Amish are often regarded as uncivilized people, but perhaps there’s something we can learn from them.

Patrick Carroll

Quote:
For nearly 30 years, Amos Miller has owned and operated Miller’s Organic Farm, an all-natural Amish farm located in Bird-in-Hand Pennsylvania. Like many Amish farmers, Miller likes to do things the old-fashioned way. He doesn’t use electricity, fertilizer, or gasoline, and he also stays away from modern preservatives.

The farm’s reputation has grown over the years, and it now boasts a private buyers club of approximately 4,000 members. Miller has sold all sorts of food to his buyers, such as organic eggs, raw milk, grass-fed beef and cheese, and fresh produce.

“They use it as a medicine,” Miller said in a 2021 interview. “It’s very healing to the body because it’s raw.”

“They’re good people,” said one of his customers. “Their place is very clean, and their produce is excellent.”

In recent years, however, the farm has found itself in the crosshairs of the US Department of Agriculture because of its failure to comply with federal farming regulations.

It all started in 2016, when two listeriosis illnesses that occured in 2014 were traced back to raw milk sold by Miller’s Organic Farm. Both infected people had to be hospitalized, and one tragically died from the illness.

The USDA has been trying to bring the farm into compliance with federal regulations ever since, but it’s been a long hard series of court battles, in part because Miller has been, by his own admission, less than fully co-operative with the government. Miller is facing fines and jail time for his actions.

The story reached a climax in March of this year when a federal judge ordered Miller to cease and desist all meat sales and authorized armed US marshals to use “reasonable force” to gain access to Miller’s farm so a court expert could inspect it. The expert—accompanied by the armed marshals—took an inventory of all Miller’s meat, and federal inspectors are now returning every few months to make sure he hasn’t sold any of it.

I am not an expert at FDA/USDA regulations, but it seems like if all that my local sushi joint has to do is put a little astericks warning at the bottom of the menu warning me of what I already know, that eating raw fish can be dangerous, all this farmer should have to do is put a little warning on his label saying the same.

Don't the people buying his good understand there is a risk associated with them?

Don't they have some level of personal responsibility to take (or not take) the risks they deem suitable based on the rewards?

Does Ben know that the sky is black at night when the sun goes down?

Prolly not, he's in a drug-addled stupor by then.

- Roy: Yeah, well he blessed you, too, and I'll give you a hint what it is. It's round, has three holes, and you put your fingers into it.
- Ishmael: You leave Rebecca out of this.”

The sun doesn't go down... we rotated and from our vantage point it just looks like that...

And the sky is not black when we rotate away from the sun... it's the same color as it is in the day... it's transparent.

I think you're the one that spent your days doing too many drugs in school.

Pshhhh.

I see now. Perceiving the world visually through colors is fooling us. What fools these mortals be.

Thank you Mr. Science.

in this instance, you'd look a lot brighter admitting you were wrong rather than going on the attack.

No one would think less of you, that I can guarantee...

The creation of the FDA was well intentioned, IMO (have you ever seen actual bottles of snake oil?). But they quickly became corrupt enforcers for the mafia crime family that is government. It's interesting that Mr. Miller is not facing prison time for homicide; but he is expected to pay a huge fine. That literally means that a death resulting from his products is OK, for a price.

If the only punishment for breaking a law is a fine, then that law exists only to punish poor people, or that the infraction is in fact legal (for a price).

I don't know the details of the claim that Mr. Miller's raw milk killed somebody, but since people have been consuming raw milk for thousands of years, I find the accusation dubious. How do we know it was not the consumer who mishandled the product and introduced harmful pathogens? You can do the same thing with pasteurized milk after all.
Raw milk is one of those things that have natural antipathogenic properties for obvious reasons, it's consumed by calves.

I have no faith in the FDA for the reasons you stated, government bureaucracies quickly become corrupt. They become attack dogs for hire by industry cartels.
When the FDA errors and people die, as a result, they are immune from prosecution for their crimes and probably will get a budget increase.

No no no... it applies to all organizations of all types.

Any organizations what so ever is lizard people in your eyes.

All organizations instill stupid rules and laws for what ever stupid reason causing people to behave as they otherwise would...

That is the nature of organizing people.

Isn't that what you ultimately proclaim to hate?

The organization of people?
