After sitting in the dor' for nearly 2 years I took one out and fired it up today.

There's no other way to say this: If you like Nicaraguan cigars - these check all my boxes. Flavor. Spice. Smoke volume. Size. Time.

The only knock I got on em is 80% of them will burn uneven with the occasional need to flame a side to keep things even. Don't get me wrong, I definitely consider them to be yard gars, and nothing special but for the price, imho, they are hard to beat.

The reason for this post is not only to give my opinion for others but to also inquire from others: > What are some other really good cheap gars that are overlooked and relatively cheap that fill that full bodied flavor profile of the Nicaraguan?? Preferably Maduro and preferably tons of smoke?

I Know about and have ordered Diesels. (Check box filled)
I know about Man O War's (Check)
Of course I know about Liga's and Padrons but they're not known as being cheap. lol. I'm also trying to dip my toes into Cigarillos because honestly, sometimes I just like to have a cigar hanging in my mouth like the old west cowboys and those 40+ ring gauged cigars / it's not easy to do that with them. I'm trying to score some Man o War cigarillos now and I have no doubt I will succeed.

I remember way back in the day CAO used to make a short cigar named "Piranha" IIRC and it was literally black and the amount of full bodied smoke that sucker put out was unreal. For whatever reason, they stopped making them and I was pissed because that's the closest thing to heaven I've ever smoked - even the 25th anny Padrons couldn't compete with it. It was that good.

Help a brother out. Name your go to cheap (ish) overlooked dark, full bodied, heavy duty Nicaraguan cigars. Other regions are welcome but my main point is full bodied, heavy duty, earthy toned, lots of smoke cigars. Not those frilly / creamy European lightweights. Not interested in those. Thanks guys.

Try Ramon Bueso Genesis The Project Muy Bueso. I scored a box for around $52 and they are a really enjoyable dark maduro

Depending on your definition of cheap and what kind of burn time you’re looking for, I would heartily recommend the Tatuaje Petite Cazadores Reserva (4x40) or the bigger brother Noella Reserva (5.125 x 42). Of course ymmv.

Nica LIbre
5 Vegas Nicaragua
Ave Maria Argentum
601 Blue
Cain F / Maduro
Punch Bareknuckle / Gran Puro / Estate Selection

With patient bidding, you can get most of these for $2-$2.50 each. Except for the 601s, and it's getting harder with the Ave Maria's.

Nice guys ---- keep em' coming. I love the $2 - $2.50 range of overlooked cigars.

A great guy at the tobacco shop taught me a very valuable lesson early on in my cigar training wheels days. He asked me if I knew what the difference was between a great $20 cigar and a great $2 cigar was....?

Of course I said "no." Puzzled and perplexed at the question. He responded: "$18.00" / and from that day forward, I understood.

97% of the time if you pay up for the 25th anny Padron, you're going to get perfection. That's nice and all, but 97% of the time, I can do without perfection. Just give me 'real good' for $2 - $2.50

I like buying overruns. I’ve been lucky and unlucky but at 2$ per I don’t care that much.
If you like Oliva cigars the 2nds are good and the flor de Oliva

My dad used to say he was willing to spend X amount to get 85% of what he wanted, but not double that amount for the other 15%. Its how I’m approaching cigars.

I buy a brick of these every time I order. It's easily my most frequently smoked cigar.

No more cap issues?

I stopped buying them in 2015 because of that.

Cap issues??
Never heard that……never had that problem.
I did have one or two fivers that were ammonia bombs……must have been 5-10 years ago.
Truth be told I cant speak about recent Baitfish, all mine are many years old………and pretty good.

After Swisher Sweets bought Drew Estate in 2014, there were cap issues (…mostly unraveling…) starting in 2015. By then I had 3 mazos of the BF so stopped bidding on them. However I didn’t know about the issues until My-Brother-from-Another-Mother, Youngra, sent me a 5er of them in ‘15 and warned me about the caps. Iirc, when I finally got around to smoking them, they did have issues. But, it wasn’t only the Bait Fish, other MUWAT vitolas had similar problems too. I also had gifted UC cigars from around that 2015-2016 timeframe that had poorly applied caps.

You’re lucky that you didn’t experience the QC challenges during that window.

I would love to order a truck load of those MUWAT Bait Fish 4x44 sticks but pretty much everywhere I look they are about $4 a stick. 25 of em for $105 - ish - give or take.

I don't mind spending that much mind you, but that price is a little bit outside of my comfort zone and definitely outside my 'yard' gar price range. If that makes sense. Any tips on scoring them cheaper?

I think the days of scoring Bait Fish for around $2.50 each are gone. Mazos of them used to be commonplace on the auction sites but they seem to have fallen out of favor.

Palama - well then, what's the next Bait Fish that no one has discovered yet?

I’ve kinda been out of the 30-45 minutes short smoke game since 2015-ish so don’t really know what is good to get within your price range. Hopefully others can recommend something.

The 2012 to early 2014 Buesos were really good.
Then things went south.
Bought fibers every couple hears after that…….just Ok for me.
Pretty sure I have a “recent” fiver, as in from a year or two ago.
Might have to try it.

Between the Genesis line "The Project" and "Genesis Habano" there was quite a different experience for me. Both were nice looking and built well.

"The Project" more resembles the flavor profile Nonamesguy described was his preference. The "Genesis Habano" had less bite, but was not lacking in character. I bought a fiver of the "Genesis Oscuro", yet to arrive, hoping it will be more similar to the "Genesis Habano" but perhaps bolder.

Paid about $1.75 for any of them, but I've seen some stupid auctions as well

If I can get what I got for under $2.00, I'll pay that all day. Would be very happy with a war chest full of em'.

Didn't have to correct the burn but it wasn't perfect. The flavor, the draw, everything else was spot on for what I am looking for. Because of the non perfect burn but also didn't have to correct I'd give it 7.5 stars. Does the trick. Nothing to gripe about really.

You may want to try a few more before stocking up. They can have consistency problems.

The first one of these I smoked (Genesis) was fantastic. The second turned so bitter halfway through that I couldn't finish it, and that is really saying something. The third was ok but not as good as the first. Etc.

That would suck. I can imagine siting down with a buddy and offering a smoke that you found was really good. You light up a couple and your buddy ends up with a dog d'oh!
