Break out the Adderall, the T.A. applications and the post-structuralist critiques, everybody – ESPN says ex-Oregon star Jeremiah Masoli is going to grad school:
Former Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli is expected to be admitted to one of three graduate programs at the University of Mississippi, which should make him eligible to play as early as this season, a source told ESPN’s Joe Schad.
Masoli would have to walk on at Ole Miss as he would not be granted a scholarship, the source said. But Masoli, a good student, would be eligible to possibly receive a reduced tuition cost.
Masoli is expected to make a formal visit to Ole Miss as soon as this weekend, the source said.
Schad’s source echoed an earlier report by the proprietor of the Ole Miss site Rebel Grove, who said earlier in the evening that Masoli had had already been admitted to UM. That wasn’t the case as of Wednesday night: The university still has to make a formal decision on Masoli’s admission. Then it has to ask for a waiver from Oregon releasing him to play this play this fall. Then it will ask the NCAA to waive a one-year residency requirement to actually get Masoli on the field. (This should be a formality if he’s admitted to a program that isn’t offered at Oregon; hence the restriction to just three options. Both schools offer graduate programs in sociology, Masoli’s major as an undergrad, but Ole Miss also offers a master’s program in social work; Oregon doesn’t. And no, he’s not going to law school.) Then the Rebels have to cross their fingers that Lane County, Ore., elects not to pursue Masoli for violating parole in the suspended license/marijuana arrest that got him booted from Oregon last month.
So it’s far from a done deal. But coach Houston Nutt hopes to have the new face of the program in the fold by the weekend.
If he’s able to pick up a new offense in a month – or Ole Miss is able to successfully install the zone read and spread option sets that made Masoli a household name on the West Coast – Masoli’s presence instantly changes the outlook for a team that was just picked to finish dead last in the SEC West by Southern media types. Nutt is no stranger to coaching run-first types who don’t scare anyone as passers – see glorified tailback Matt Jones at Arkansas – and Masoli isn’t just a "system guy," despite the hosannas for his old coach, Chip Kelly: He may not be a first-round draft pick, but Masoli did just lead Oregon to at least 37 points in eight of nine Pac-10 games last year, its first outright conference championship since 2001 and its first Rose Bowl since 1995.
Compared to the resumé of projected starter Nathan Stanley or incoming JUCO transfer Randall Mackey, the only "controversy" here is whether to install Masoli with the first team immediately, or pay lip service to a competition for a week or so. He’s not coming 2,500 miles and jumping through a bunch of bureaucratic hoops to sit on the bench.
And remember: Even if Masoli doesn’t make it through the hoops in time to play this year, he can still use a redshirt year and return in 2011. That was his original plan at Oregon after being suspended for the season following a guilty plea for stealing a laptop from a frat house. But obviously he’s ready to get back out there, and Ole Miss is ready to take him. |

AP source: Masoli accepts invite to visit Ole Miss
Former Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli has accepted an invitation from Mississippi coach Houston Nutt to visit the school this weekend, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Friday.
Masoli made the decision early Friday morning to visit the Oxford campus. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because Masoli has not yet enrolled in school.
Masoli was considered a possible Heisman Trophy candidate after a breakout season at Oregon, but coach Chip Kelly kicked him off the team after two brushes with the law in six months.

Nutt said earlier this summer that the Rebels weren’t interested in Masoli, but the situation changed when backup quarterback Raymond Cotton left the team last week, just two weeks before the start of preseason practice.
The Rebels lost last season’s starter, Jevan Snead, when he decided to skip his senior season and enter the NFL draft. That leaves Ole Miss with just two scholarship quarterbacks—redshirt sophomore Nate Stanley, whose experience came when he played briefly in the Cotton Bowl last January after Snead was injured, and junior college transfer Randall Mackey.
Masoli’s been looking for a second chance and a new home this summer. He can play immediately this season under NCAA rules because he has already earned his undergraduate degree, but he must be accepted into graduate school.
Masoli joined the Ducks in 2008 as a fifth-string junior college transfer who was expected to redshirt. But he got a chance to play because of injury and held onto the job. In 2009, he guided the Ducks to their first Pac-10 title since 2001 and their first Rose Bowl since 1995. He threw for 2,147 yards and 15 touchdowns and rushed for 668 yards and 13 touchdowns.
The San Francisco native pleaded guilty in March to misdemeanor second-degree burglary in a plea deal after he was charged with a felony for stealing a pair of laptop computers and a guitar from a fraternity on campus last January. Kelly suspended him for the 2010 season. He was expected to redshirt and Kelly allowed him to practice with the team during spring practice.
Kelly dismissed him from the team after police cited him for possession of less than one ounce of marijuana and driving with a suspended license and failing to stop upon exiting a driveway in June. Masoli entered a guilty plea and paid a $613 fine last week.
The plea may be considered a violation of his probation for the burglary conviction, but it was unclear how Lane County prosecutors would handle the case. Masoli has fulfilled all of his other obligations in connection to that case, his attorney said.
A phone message left with the district attorney’s office was not returned.
Nutt and Ole Miss can expect to take criticism if Masoli eventually joins the team. Masoli began repairing his image by launching his own website, www.jeremiahmasoli.net, to tell his side of the story and apologize.
“I made a few very poor decisions in the past year, and I apologize to my family, friends and fans for them,” a letter on Masoli’s home page reads. “But I am not the person who has been portrayed in many media stories.
“I am not a thief nor a thug. The people who know me best know that is the truth.”
The website features pictures of Masoli, including one of him hugging his grandmother, a biography, career timeline, endorsements by former coaches and others he’s close with, a resume and a section entitled media mistakes, detailing inaccuracies Masoli says have been made in stories about him.
Masoli concludes his letter by writing: “I love playing football and want to continue to play. I’m still trying to figure out where that might be.
“Lastly, I want to thank my family, who I love very much. They have shown great support and forgiveness for the mistakes I made. I do not ever want to let them down again.” |

It’s official!!!
Former Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli joins Ole Miss
Kicked off the team at Oregon, Jeremiah Masoli has found a new football home at Mississippi.
The former Ducks quarterback, dismissed from the team after two run-ins with the law, visited the Ole Miss campus in Oxford this weekend and coach Houston Nutt offered him a place on the team as a walk-on.
Masoli, a California native, posted on his website Sunday that he intends to take up the offer.
He can play immediately under NCAA rules because he has earned his undergraduate degree and is enrolling in graduate school. He said on his website he will enter the parks and recreation management program.

Masoli figured to be a possible Heisman Trophy contender this season after a breakout 2009 for the Ducks.
His status quickly changed after the season when he was charged for his role in stealing a pair of laptop computers and a guitar from a fraternity house. He pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of misdemeanor second-degree burglary and Oregon coach Chip Kelly suspended him for the 2010 season. He still practiced with the team during spring drills and was expected to redshirt.
Kelly dismissed him in June, though, after he was cited for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana and two other noncriminal violations following a traffic stop.
Masoli could still enroll at another school should he change his mind. Rebels newcomers report Aug. 8. He says on his website he’ll return to Oxford on Wednesday to begin conditioning workouts.
“I am very excited about this opportunity and very thankful Ole Miss is giving me this chance,” Masoli wrote on the home page of www.jeremiahmasoli.net. “I really want to thank Coach Nutt for believing in me.”
Nutt, who cannot talk about recruiting Masoli under NCAA rules until the player is camp, initially told reporters in July he was not interested in expanding the roster. But when backup Raymond Cotton, who was expected to push Nate Stanley for the starting job, left the team, Nutt began the search for depth at a position already thin from the departure of Jevan Snead to the NFL.
Nutt could take a public relations hit by bringing in the troubled player but he also may have improved a team picked to finish near or at the bottom in the Southeastern Conference’s Western Division.
Stanley played sparingly last season, but looked good standing in for an injured Snead in part of the Cotton Bowl last January. He earned his spot atop the depth chart in spring drills. The only other quarterback on the roster currently is Randall Mackey, a junior college transfer who has participated in summer workouts but otherwise has no experience.
Masoli seems the perfect fit for Nutt’s Wild Rebel offense. If he can earn playing time with just a month to learn the playbook, the talent is there for him to have an impact.
He guided the Ducks to their first Pac-10 title since 2001 and their first Rose Bowl appearance since 1995. The 5-foot-11, 220-pounder is a two-year starter who threw for 2,147 yards and 15 touchdowns and rushed for 668 yards and 13 touchdowns last season.
Masoli has been looking for a team since getting the boot from Oregon and started repairing his reputation by recently launching a website. He addresses his past problems, points out inaccuracies in media stories, notes that Oregon officials said nice things about him to Nutt and updates readers on his situation.
“A big shout-out to everyone who has given me strength and support during the last few months,” Masoli wrote. |

If he makes it to the pros, he might get buried on the Philadelphia Eagles depth chart.
If he stinks it up in Oxford, they’ll bury him in Philadelphia. |
